- In this Synth Restoration & Repair video, Syntaur's Carlos Morales demonstrates the process of replacing the lithium battery in an Ensoniq ESQ-1. (The process is nearly identical in the Ensoniq SQ-80, VFX, VFX-sd, and SD-1.)

I installed a new battery in my VFXSD. Same housing. I actually just clipped the ends off the old battery and soldered the pins to that instead of straight to the board. Lazy man’s work I know, but it’s worked out fine over the last five years.
Wow, this is exactly what I've been putting off doing for my ESQ-1. I guess I'll get right to it, thanks for the tutorial!
My esq has been sittiing in storage almost 10 years. Finally pulled her out but she had some moisture damage ( rust on the top panel, not heavy but there.)
When I put her away she was not working, had the "---------" on the display when turned on. I don't remember testing the midi, but I was told it was because of bad battery and tried to replace it myself, but didn't fix it. Im gonna try and plug her in today, u guys got me so inspired!!

Ensoniq made realy nice machines, it's a pitty that this company disapeared.
I don't know. The later products were not competitive in that era anymore. The big boys Roland and Korg had the vast majority of the market in their hands and ensoniq was not very good at marketing their gear either. The fun thing about synths back then was that there was a whole business around these to mod them so they could even do more that they were designed to do, Like Mirage: Synthesizer OS, ESQ1: third party sequencer expanders , DX7: Memory expansion /Arpeggiator( Supermax) , Moog source : memory expansion and midi etc. Sadly nothing like that ever happens anymore
Kudos man. If I were a Powerball winner I'd reinvest here in AMERICA and buy the rights to EMU ENSONIQ from CREATIVE LABS. Then start a new synth company here with their technologies..
Changed the battery in my ESQ-M last week... It was much simpler to dis-assemble 😉
I was just yesterday thinking about how I would like to own the ESQ-1!
I have two, plus an SQ80. I bought one to own an ESQ1, then I bought a second faulty one thinking I could use its transformer to convert my SQ80 to UK voltage (in the end I found someone selling a transformer for another Ensoniq which worked, I compared part numbers). But it was a 110v version. But the unit was in such good condition I used the chips from my faulty ESQ-M to get it going again (the faulty ESQ-1 had all the useful chips pulled out, rotten cheating ebayers), all I need to do was fix a few bad traces on the front panel board, epoxy some mounts into place (plastic model cases are not robust) and it was working fine.

I've never understood why keyboard internal battery swaps have to be so complicated. No reason not to be more user-friendly!
I think that nobody at Ensoniq back in the day imagined we would be discussing the esq 35 years after it was brought to market. The battery was designed to last a lifetime, which for electronics is 5 to 10 years. In fact my esq battery lasted for more than 25 years ( close to 30) . So there is absolutely no need to make this more user friendly,
@@Johnsormani I got rid of my Ensoniq EPS years ago but my KORG T-1 is still with me in mint condition going strong almost 30 years and I've opened the hood many times to swap out the internal battery.

It's a great video. But. Battery hold that let's you just pop in a new battery would be a heck of a lot better ..
hi wondering if knobs could be solder directly to the analog filters for real time control?
I always fit a battery holder and then you can easily swap them over. Obviously soldered is better for a keyboard that travels a lot, but I wouldn't take one on the road. You can potentially swap the battery in the holder with it powered up (being careful to avoid the PSU etc) so you don't need to restore the memory.

yeah same, I just clipped the battery leads carefully and soldered some wires from there to a battery holder. Saves you from having to take off the keybed, and due to some past uhhhh experiences as an electronics tech, I'm always paranoid about desoldering old PCBs when I don't have to.
That being said, I'm glad to know the other ways to go about it. I would say Carlos is doing it the proper way, as close to brand new as possible.

I have a K2000 in need of a battery that I'd like to do that with. I've always thought it was crazy that you'd have to solder the battery. Why don't they just have a strong clamp in there as a battery holder?
@@anonymoushuman8344 as far as I know, the k2000 uses 3 AAA batteries you can access from the underside of the unit

Do Creative even exist, all the sound chips in computers seem to be realtek now. Creative also swallowed up Emu as well.

Aren't there any compatible battery holders that one could solder in place so one doesn't have to disassemble the whole machine every time and risk damaging the solder pads beyond repair?

Yes, there are! I have two ESQ-1s. I sold a synth to an electronics student a few years ago. I told him about my ESQ-1 battery warnings, so, for the experience and the cost of the parts (minimal), he installed battery holders and new batteries in both.

@@Johnsormani It's just fine. In response to another comment of mine, Syntaur warned about batteries in holders possibly becoming loose. But my synths don't leave the house.

Hey! Just bought a power supply from you on a guess for my Ensoniq SQ1 but did not solve the problem. (The parts website specifically requests no technical questions) Now, discovered you here. My SQ1 problem is when powered up default sound (piano) comes on clean for 5 seconds, then horrible screeching noise. Any help, even guesses at capacitors, diodes, etc, would be greatly appreciated!

I'm a disabled veteran and I'm eligible to go to school or intern through vocational rehab. Due to having chronic issues with pain, I can't do my previous career path. I would love to do this type of work. I've been making music since the late 90's. It would be a dream to work on synths and keyboards for a living. Unfortunately I'm not familiar with with the education desired etc.. I would prefer to do an internship.
I just got an Ensonic SQ2 from a buddy of mine for free. I've never used a digital keyboard/ synth before, but I have plenty of experience with electronics/ robotics. I just wanted to throw this out here and see if someone could help me figure this out.
So, when I jack into the headphones port, I don't get any sound. The display works, but the LEDs above each button don't light up when you press whichever button you want. I tried giving the kayboard a factory reset, but the display didn't show anythinf other than "Button #_" when I did what was necessary to reset the keyboard. I honestly have no clue what to do about it. I assume the LEDs are possibly blown or aren't drawing any power. Bad battery? I dunno.
Weird, the one i worked on recently has a way different layout. The battery is horizontal and the board itself extends to the right edge and has less behind the cartridge port.
There were two versions of the ESQ-1 (first, the metal case, then the plastic case version), and the hardware layout is different on them.

@@GertBoers if not, it is a matter of luck (=connector layout) whether the thing just doesn't work or if the magic smoke escapes
Someone may have replaced the ribbon cable, or installed it the other way around. As long as BOTH ends are swapped around, it'll be okay...
@@Syntaur for sure it is the reason why connectors nowadays often have some mechanism to prevent connecting them the wrong way.
Shame they just did not have an easy access compartment!!

A better fix is to install a battery holder.
The coin batteries will not last as long as the stock battery. A typical coin battery is about 200 mAh, while the stock battery is 1200 mAh. There are holders for the larger batteries, but they are more likely to jar loose. But if the keyboard stays in a studio, or you don't mind more frequent battery swaps, it's a fine way to go.
@@Syntaur what about two AA batteries? I've seen that as a mod as well.
@@natestewart1975 Please don't do that. That type of battery can leak over time, causing horrible corrosive damage. A lithium battery is the way to go.
@@Syntaur my original (as far as I know) battery from 1986 still has 24% :D
@@Syntaur Thanks for that advice. A friend installed the larger battery holders in both my ESQ-1s. But they never leave the house. Much like myself ...

Depends, I have a KT76 (super clanky) a SD1/32 (not clanky at all) and I just bought a ESQ1 (not clanky at all)
