All the professional bassists in this comment section man damn! Fact is Jason Newsted was good enough to play bass for Metallica for 14 years. What have all of you done in your music careers?
Chippah he's honestly my favorite bassist from metallica. he was definitely less skilled than cliff and Robert but he just had that sense of really loving the music that he played and that's something I feel cliff and Robert just can't recreate with thier playing.
Jason was Metallica''s tightest bassist, hand's down. People can make fun of him for not being a shredder, but the dude held the rhythm better than Rob or Cliff. Listen to the AJFA isolated tracks. He's fucking spot on. He, along with Eddie Jackson and Mike Starr, are my favorite bassists. They're why I picked up a bass and have been playing for about 5 years now. His playing had the swagger, aggression, and power Metallica needed. And his backing vocals need no mentioning.
@@hafidh.2096 nah Mexicans dont care about that, also I'm pretty sure that they didnt know that was the American anthem, well at least some of them. But they do care that they get a good show, on which they got.
2:41 My friend of misery, the best song from the black album (to me) and of course is a piece of Jason. Sad than the bitches of James and Lars never let him work...
Right, the solos are from My Friend of Misery at 2:41 'till 4:15 and from Metalshock song from Flotsam And Jetsam (old Jason's band before Metallica) at 5:41 'till 6:00 This guy is awesome, respect it.

I remember hearing some of these 92-93 bootlegs and always constantly thinking to myself.... GOD its great to hear Jason...hahaha.. loved this melodic solo and the bombastic growl in his tone .
Can you remember those times, when Jason was member of metallica? I remember. I can't call Trujillo as true member of band just because I "grew up" with these guys..
Nicholas Davis he now has his own band named "Newsted". Initially, right after he left Metallica, Newsted replaced Trujillo in Ozzy Osbournes band while Robert replaced Jason in Metallica.....so they switched jobs =) Jason is still going strong
exoticgirl1 I've heard that Jason's band was going on tour with Megadeth, but Megadeth cancelled their tour for some reason. Arguments or something shit like that. Anyways.. Hopefully we will hear from him in future! :)
Gonna be honest on this one, what he plays here is easy enough to play and most of it is covers of other songs, and i do think cliff and rob are both better than Jason. However, it does sound great, i love his tone, and that my friend of misery part really inspired me. Jason is definitely not the best bassist around, but damn he is good.
Creepy Lil' Llama I agree he may not be ya know musically skilled like cliff and rob but he was the energy for Metallica and to be honest I feel like he was the force that kept them going with the backing vocals and amazing stage presence so yea Jason is one of a kind musician
I have to say Jason is better than Rob, only for the simple fact that in the studio, Cliff , Jason and Rob a great. The studio is a controlled atmosphere where everything is perfected with take after take and then editing to how it should be. But where Jason is better than Rob is the live shows. No one goes to a live show expecting to hear perfection or hope that the songs sound like original recordings, where Jason surpasses Rob is with his stage presence, energy, and backing vocals. Guy had one hell of a voice. Almost like he was possessed in a way. Jason WAS Metallica. I can't imagine being able to play in my favorite band like he did and bring that energy and enthusiasm as a new-comer/emotional punching bag the way he did. Most guys probably would have quit being in his position, but that wasn't Jasons style until finally it became out of hand and he literally had no free will to do anything on the side.
You'd be fucked in the head to think there's NOT gonna be somebody better, there ALWAYS is. But listening to this dude, right here, right now, ... I'd say he's the SHIT.
the "my friend of misery" bass melody is still one of the most wonderful and yet simple melodies i know. its a totally underrated masterpiece, for me... will always remenber this tune!
There's no denying the greatness of the legendary Cliff Burton, he was the original and always will be, yet I have never heard any bass player, I've never heard anyone playing anything remotely as awesome as this performance by Jason Newsted. What a Master and Legend he is! He'll always be remembered for his work, a bass for hire that became the back bone of Metallica.

There are different tones you can get from either.A plectrum creates quite a sharp/trebly sound whilst fingers tend to be"Bassy"(you tend to only hear the note rather than the fingers striking the string). It can be down to the desired style of playing: Slap-bass in genres such as funk require the use of fingers whereas, in this video from 5:40, Jason intends to play some improvisation superfast which is easily achieved by "Alternate Picking,"-can be done with fingers but it's harder=preference

maksphoto78 Really haven't listened to many bass solos then have you mate?
There are different tones you can get from either.A plectrum creates quite a sharp/trebly sound whilst fingers tend to be"Bassy"(you tend to only hear the note rather than the fingers striking the string). It can be down to the desired style of playing: Slap-bass in genres such as funk require the use of fingers whereas, in this video from 5:40, Jason intends to play some improvisation superfast which is easily achieved by "Alternate Picking,"-can be done with fingers but it's harder=preference
Dude Jason is just a cool ass dude. when he spoke to a crowd you could tell his words were heart felt and he never had a certain of kind of dick way about him. always seemed very respectable.
forever gives me chills
The crowd will never be drowned out
He did not get the applause he deserved for that awesome jam/solo
