As an Eighties baby who was born in 1984, I enjoy singing to songs of the Eighties eholst dancing to Eighties music alot because it helps me get through the difficult times that lie ahead.
IMHO this timeless pop classic and the very beautiful "Open Your Mind" bonus track on the 12" are still the best 8W tracks by a million miles! I'll never understand why it wasn't a massive hit - well not in the UK anyway*, where despite even prime-time TV exposure (a really stunning & energetic performance that had Patsy rolling around on the floor of the Wogan chat-show studio like her life depended upon it - I have a recording of it somewhere) it mysteriously dropped out of the charts after only hitting a miserable #65. I bet they must have been crestfallen - perhaps why it took 2 years to follow it up? And the other B-side track on this "Loser In Love" was pretty good too. But what about the Stay With Me 12" extended version? Somewhat over-ambitious I reckon. One of those 12"ers that isn't just extended but a full-on reconstruction that splices it to bits and then throws everything but the kitchen sink at it & extends this little 3-minute masterpiece of pop perfection into... well a very interesting 5 minutes for sure.. but ultimately a bit of a mess in my opinion.. or maybe I'm just bitter because i was forced to buy the 7" as this version wasn't included on the 12". Anyway here's hoping that it won't be too long before some ace bedroom- remixer surprises us with a new "should-have-been-the-12"-mix" here on youTube thats actually a real improvement on this original :-) [Update: I just checked and discovered that not only was this (of course!)"big in Japan" but also a huge #1 hit in Italy! Now I understand why there's so many Italiano comments on here! Well done Italia! Good to know that there was one country that recognised this as the pop genius it is]
I'm from Italy, I can confirm this was MASSIVE here, I remember it fondly. I've then grown up with a lot of sophisticated music, rock, metal and alternative stuff, and to this day I still find this pop song fascinating, and the harmonies very pleasing (love the chromatic progression in the refrain, you rarely hear that in today's popular songs)
