DQ. I love it. I get such neat stuff there, like a 6 dollar transistor radio, and 'BOSS-A-RU' coffee. Last April I found 4 cans of it in my storage unit out in Kapolei that I had forgotten about since 2009. I drank one and did not die. I get bentos and sit on the big picnic benches. Eventually you see everyone you know at DQ.
LOL about not dying Wayne! 😂 DQ is amazing! Many wonderful foods, snacks and of course oddities like your 6 dollar transistor radio. What more can you ask for?!
Usually stay at the pagoda so that was a place to go get poke and supplies and they are some eateries in the front the one to the far left had some preety good grinds and roast pork tnks again for sharing your food adventures 🍜🌺🤙🌺
Thanks for taking one for Paco! As several folks have said tripe stew is an acquired taste. I was introduced to tripe stew at Ono Hawaiian Food on Kapahulu Avenue while I was working in the hospitality industry and my Hawaiian tour guide friends would drag me along for lunch. While Ono's has closed I always measure other tripe stews to Ono's version and have yet to find one that compares. I noticed that the unagi bento was priced very reasonably and my wife commented that the unagi probably came from China as opposed to the unagi raised in Japan. I can't taste the difference when eating unagi in a casual take-out bento but I can tell you the unagi I've had in Kyoto and in Tokyo are winnahs! Keep your videos coming. I enjoy our honest opinion on the food that you try and that is a big plus to me.
Yes an acquired taste for sure. I do love book tripe though. The thinner kind in pho. Thanks for noting about the difference on unagi. I've been wanting to go to Japan but you know how the world works now. Hopefully soon!
I cant wait to try the Otoro sushi. Its been a awhile since I had Tripe Stew, its OK. The misoyaki Butterfish looks awesome. It was my Mom's favorite, god bless her
I enjoyed it so much. As others have said though, if you like a fair amount of vinegar in your sushi rice, they don't put as much. It is okay for me because I'm not a fan of too much vinegar. Happy eating!
💥Oh man! I wish you had done this earlier!!!!!!!!!💥I was just on Oahu from the Big Island last week!!!!😂🤣 Otoro for $13.98!?!?!😱😱!! I would’ve bought a bunch!!🤣😂 I did get good deals at the pearl city one! The ikura 🔥🔥🔥!! Good for you on trying the tripe! I love tripe! But I get what you mean about the aroma!😳🤣!! Love your content, and your Montana trip was so cool! I’m going to Oregon and Seattle soon, so it really helped!! Keep up the awesome vids!! 🤙🌴!!!
You took one for the team, good job. My wife's mom is Filipino & cooks some tripe to add into Kare Kare. Don't care for tripe but I'll eat it, to be nice.
I also remember the pre-Don Quijote days, when it was Daiei. Hearing that name and reference is a blast from the past, and conjures up fond memories of that time. 🍱 The sushi and unagi donburi looked delicious and at such reasonable prices, compared to my area. 🍣 Kudos to you for trying the tripe stew...so kind and accommodating of you to honor that request. Thanks again for another enjoyable review. ✨🌺✨
@@jtabarejo lol... just the other week, I referred Don Qs as Holiday Mart to a friend of mine. Luckily, we're both old enough to remember that. Then, we started yo name more back- in -the -day spots but thats a convo for another time.
Yes I remember it as Holiday Mart, Daiei,&Don Q.I love the cooked eel sushi you ate my favorite.I wouldn’t touch buffet sushi or gas station sushi with a 10 foot pole.Nice looking bentos wish I could pull them right through the computer screen.👍😁
I'm that old too haha. I remember first time eating otoro was outside at Tsukiji Market, bought a slab n man was 🧈 been my fav ever since. I would have saved for last cuz nothing can beat that 🤤 totally worth it, restaurant be like 3x $
I was enjoying my Butterfish bento from Pearl City Foodland Farms when I started watching your video. Finished my bento before the end of the video. Love your videos, you got a great job!
Wowww I never go Don Quijote long time!! That store is no good for me, I like walk thru every. single. aisle. 😂🙈 and spend all my money on stuff I want but don't need lol and not to mention all the food 🥴 I bet I could spend a whole day in there and still wanna come back the next day for more haha. Mahalo for the review Misty, definitely gotta pick up that ottoro nigiri next time I find myself at Don Quijote 😋 and I've actually never had tripe stew!! I think? Lol so next time maybe I'll. try that out too!
I remember Holiday Mart... Mom would haul all six of us in the back of the old station wagon... And then she'd give us each lists and we all had a cart and then we'd head out and get what she wanted and meet back at the checkout.... And then, if my mom had enough money left, we get some Chinese plates next door... Good times good times.
The black thing is wood ear mushroom. It doesn't have much taste, but is common in stir fry dishes, hot & sour soup, egg rolls etc. for its crunchy texture. I wish I could eat the tripe stew for you. I like it, but would be better if it was mixed with beef brisket and tendon.
Thank you for the information. Now I remember what it is. My grandma used to put it in soups. I like the crunch but the one in this cold dish was so over cooked it was unfortunately mushy.
I honestly don't know what those are. People think I'm Japanese but I am not and wasn't raised on these foods. but I'd give it a try. I do love most Japanese food. Is it always available everyday there?
How about doing Marukai bentos? The face you made when looking at the tripe was so funny. ;) I like tripe stew. For $6.98/lb, I'll need to try some from there.
Is the food at Don Qui better than Foodland? BTW - I apologize if you mentioned it earlier, but did you ever serve in the military or work as a civilian? If so, thank you for your service. If not, thank you for the eye-opening price comparison.
I think the hot foods and bentos are better at Don Q. The poke however is much better at Foodland. I have never been in the military or worked for it as a civilian. My son's dad is a veteran which let's us have access. Mahalo!
Food is definitely much better at the Kaheka location as opposed to PC or Waipahu. The outside food court selection is also better. The sushi is OK for the price. My only complaints are that there's not enough vinegar flavor, and they usually pack the rice too much, almost like a mini musubi. Should be a little looser. But I do like the fact that they sell trays of 1-2 choices like all maguro or half maguro and half salmon. That way you aren't forced to buy the assorted where you only get a couple of favorites and the rest are meh.
I understand about the vinegar and rice ratio. I'm not a fan of vinegar so it doesn't bother me. But I understand for those looking for something more authentic.
🤣I hate that place. No can make up my mind, cause get too much stuff to choose from! And den I end up getting too much cause da eye too big😳. Awesome sake selection too!
You don't even need teeth! That'sa cool spot. I'll have to hit that up on the way back to the mainland. But your face is priceless. Not your thang!!! 🏃♀️💨💨💨💨

Love Honolulu Don Quijote. They have an extensive Japanese alcohol section as well - imo zochu (potato shochu), sake and whisky.

Aw that's great memories! I remember we used to go there once in a while to grocery shop. That and the old stores like Gibsons in Salt Lake.
Yeah, Don Qui's prepared foods are a "hit or miss." But, their variety of food offered in one locale is a plus. Thanks for sharing!
Good job on the tripe stew! That's awesome! I will try the otoro sushi soon even though it's a little out of my price range.
