Both Peach and Daisy have bellybuttons, though, as can be seen in that clip from the 2020 Olympics game. Like, it would be one thing if they just didn't give anyone nipples or bellybuttons, but the fact that some characters have them and some don't just makes it more jarring.

I just watched a 7 and a half minute video explaining the history and reasoning behind that fact that Mario no longer has nipples. Pretty good use of my time if you ask me.

I think it's because violence is more accepted than sexual things in children's games. Not saying nipples are necessarily sexual, just what most people associate it with. Edit: well not only in games but also other media aswell.

Gabobei I know, but I still wanted to mention that since unlike later iterations of Mario holding what would obviously look like a toy gun, he actually had a friggin’ revolver while dressed up in a cavalryman uniform, and it wasn’t until the Nintendo calendar that someone at Nintendo thought to redraw it to resemble one of those gag guns that have the “BANG!” flag pop out the end of the barrel when the trigger is pulled.
