Manual clutch for small engine

  • I copied the design from a picture in a 100 year old drag saw maintenance manual, and scaled it to work on a 1/2" diameter shaft. The clutch works amazingly well, but I was afraid to scale it down any farther (all of my small engines have 3/8" diameter output shafts) because I doubted to my ability to make the required small pieces. I will be posting a download link of the plans on the model engine forums I attend if anyone would care to make this clutch. The working principle of this clutch is a flat piece of friction material trapped between two flat steel plates, not unlike an automotive clutch. One of the steel plates is fixed to the powered shaft, the other plate moves in and puts pressure against the friction material, thus squeezing it between the two steel plates and transferring the torque from one steel disc to another.---Brian Rupnow

I have 2 similar clutches that are from the 50's,and were used on an industrial mower. They are on 1"shafts and have a tapered wedge that raise a cam, similar to a motorcycle drum brake, but drum is fastened to a shaft.Eclipse reel type homeowners small reel type gas powered mowers also used similar clutches.Old technology, but durable.

I want to design a clutch for a motorized bike. Where do you find a throw out bearing like that?

The description of the video explains this. If your familiar with how a car clutch works, this clutch is similar but not as complicated.
