      @Lazarultos Рік тому +37

      @@rabadonsdeathcap7418 Yeah, jumpscares aren't "inherently" bad practice for horror, but so many people over-use them or use them without earning it. The best jumpscares are the ones that take advantage of our "Fight or Flight" response after the game's already made us tense and alert with its atmosphere and situation. Crappy jumpscares make us flinch or twitch and that's the end of it. Really good ones will leave your heart pounding in your chest long after the danger has passed. In the case of this Doom mod, its few jumpscares are well-earned with how tense it makes you in the time leading up to them.

    I feel like Muta dismissed the journal a little too much, as most of the stuff he later calls 'cryptic' is actually pretty well hinted at in there. I think the authors intent was that the map and the extra files were meant to be explored together in order to tell the story. This mod is so incredibly creative.

      Agree, there were also some minor mistakes where some sequences he believed happened at certain times but they didn’t. For example if you respawn all the enemies by wandering around the house after collecting the keys.. you can’t get ending one. You’re locked in because by that point the house has changed to version 2 with skulls. No idea why he said you could still get to the exit

    The big thing about Running From Evil is that it's THE Doom 2 song- the default map01 music that plays when you play doom2 for the first time. Years and decades of people making maps and not changing the music means that it's effectively the default music for custom maps. So as a longtime doom player, when the music you have basically tattooed on your soul starts to get twisted and distorted when you don't expect it, it really fucks with you.
    There's a few more tweaks that mess with you too- altered weapons that use slightly different art and frames, you're taller than you should be, etc. So there's an extra layer to the creepiness of you're a longtime doom player.

    • @truxima
      @truxima 10 місяців тому

      Since there are some very clear homages to Backrooms, SCP, etc., I would not be surprised that the distorting of Running From Evil is a homage to Everywhere At The End Of Time (and the attention, for better or for worse, it got)

    You missed one of the best parts of this entire map. It’s ridiculously weird to get, but the closet in the house has a chance to lead you to a completely dark hallway, and that hallway keeps going on and on and on, but with no music at all. It’s genuinely one of the most nerve racking parts for the, the absolute silence, darkness and small spaces make it so unsettling to walk through. AND it’s also based off the house of leaves book as well, which is just nuts. I think I need to read that book now.

    • @glazedham682
      @glazedham682 Рік тому +55

      He also missed the hospital section and the movie cut ending. And how the game messes with you in little ways. Like changing the framerate of animations, playing discord sounds, adding instruments to the classic doom music or taking it away. Oh and how almost every map is the house again, and how the house is laid out like a blue keycard. This was a real passion project.

    • @JediMastr80
      @JediMastr80 Рік тому +8

      I looked in the map in UDB and there is a script for that closet. Basically, it has a random 10% chance to trigger and if it does, this labyrinth is linked to the closet instead (via line portals). The other 90% of the time, it's just the normal closet. Now, I'm not sure if this is decided upon opening the door or if it's randomly set upon starting the map. It might be interesting to investigate this as it could be something could start incorporating in maps more (I'm still trying to learn the Doom's advanced scripting).
      As for it being silent, there is a script that triggers when you walk too far into it (so you can't retreat) that puts a hidden item in your inventory and fades the music. It's interesting how you can use hidden items like this, and even make them act like keys to only trigger when you have specific items. This is done multiple times when playing and the player is completely unaware of it. I think this is done when the doors leading to outside the house are removed and when that item is removed, the doors are restored (could be wrong on this, but since I know they have lines set to specific keys, it's probably somewhat accurate).
      As for the labyrinth, even trying to view it in 3D mode, with maxed out brightness in Ultimate Doom Builder (pressing B in 3D mode), it's still confusing as all the textures are the same. I can't remember if they have multiple line portals teleporting you to other parts of the maze or not, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did.
      Even more interesting, there are at least 20 something house variations, which mostly seamless transition via the line portals (some repeatable, many are 1 time use). Many are simple to explain, with 1 of them being the upstairs and the other being the basement. The attic has 2 other version, both regular and mirror world.
      Also, there are I think close to 18 something "ladies bathroom" variations for the airport. They have a bunch of invisible 1 way line portals for every possible way people could move, which slowly covers blood in the room.
      If anybody wants the map in 3D mode, extract the myhouse.pk3 with 7zip (as .pk3 files are just renamed .zip files).
      - Download Ultimate Doom Builder 64-bit. Note it MUST BE the 64 bit version, or it will crash in 3D mode as it runs out of memory as it used between 3 to 4 GB.
      - Load up the house.wad in UDB that was extracted from the myhouse.pk3, but in the resources, drag the myhouse.pk3 into that. This will load all the custom resources and textures as well. Not sure if it makes a difference but I set the game config to GZDOOM: Doom 2 (UDMF) instead of Eternity: Doom 2 (UDMF).
      I only mention UDB mainly for easier 3D viewing of the map, which I don't think can be done in programs like SLADE (but I could be wrong).
      Honestly, somebody could easily spend hours making a video showing off some of the genius moves the creator did to make this map. I could see many people using this map to study from to learn some of these advanced features that many (including me) didn't know you could even do.

    The "cryptic" door in the fence outside the house is actually hinted in a painting in the living room after you collect all the items, and also it would be good to mention that for a doom fan, you get to notice more of the changes in the house because of how the doors are opened differently the second time you enter it, and how the weapons turn to have smooth animations as well (the second time you enter), also the music gets kind off distorted as well missing some notes and going out of beat.

    When MyHouse was first making rounds, I didn't get it. A horror WAD with backrooms and some sort of ARG story? Wow, so original.
    Looking at it in depth...I'm so glad how wrong I was. While there is a meta-narrative about the author and his dead friend, it's entirely discovered through the map itself and the journal. No strange internet scavenger hunts through cryptic clues, instead relying on the player to figure things out. And the inclusion of the backrooms makes sense, as they're only a small part of the overall experience. I never thought I could have a non-cringe backrooms experience in current year, but here we are.
    The best part to me is how impressive the map itself is. I have some experience in Doom mapping, and it's apparent to me how much work was put into this. It puts into perspective how dedicated and advanced the Doom community has become over 30 years. Seeing the "my house but in Doom" theme used in such a clever way is so nostalgic to anyone who's come across old (ie pre-internet) maps. I'm glad I finally took a look at MyHouse.

      @@GrimNephilim Dude, if there's anyone here missing the point, it's you. Just because they called it a "meta-narrative" doesn't mean they think it's real, and you need to brush up on your reading comprehension skills. The other guy was praising the mod for being a clever play on the ARG and creepy-pasta tropes of the past few years, and how its "secrets" were treated as a story which has happened or is happening in the background, with the player being free to discover it all on their own as they go through the map.
      No rational person (especially one providing a critique/analysis of the way its horror story was presented through Doom) would honestly think any of this is true, because if it was then that would be the same thing as believing that this Doom mod is haunted and supernatural entities have somehow breached your device.

    As an aside, if anyone's wondering why some things look blurry, it's because GZDoom has texture filtering on by default because the guy in charge is very adamant about it. If you want to turn it off, go to Settings, Display, and then Texture Options and turn off the top option in that menu (you can use the arrow keys for that if you need to). I haven't played this myself, but MyHouse is very good. And GZDoom is probably the most advanced and accessible sourceport/engine out there, it even powers games like REKKR: Sunken Land, Selaco, Hedon, Disdain, and the neon cyberpunk looking game that Muta showed footage of and more. The Doom modding community is incredibly talented and there's lots of good things to explore. Doomworld is a good forum to get yourself acquainted with things and find other forums if you want to get into or look at more advanced stuff!

    6:30 Strangely, I didn't realize Steven's obituary appeared elsewhere before getting into the game because I remember in Power Pak's video, he happened to find it towards the end of his playthroughs experimenting different solutions and getting it via a QR code on a grave ingame
    If Steven's obituary was shown before everything, that wouldn't've had as much impact anyway because in the photo of the newspaper clipping, you can see Thomas' face there anyway which would spoil that surprise
    I can't help but think perhaps Muta accidentally saw something he was supposed to see later after uncovering every single content out of everything in it
    (nvm, Muta mentions this near the end of the video ahahahhahah)
    And like I mentioned on Power Pak's video, it's just really weird as well how like, the poses of the two in the obituary and the framed photo are more or less the same, just Steven is facing the camera and Thomas has a sweater on in the framed photo, but the pose and faces and clothing (Thomas's shirt collar too in both) look identical, even tho there is a background in the framed photo
    Edit: Only thing that bothers me a little is after going through other videos about this mod, Muta has missed quite a fair few other things too, like with the hidden door in the fence leading to the highway
    It wasn't so much a guess what to do next sorta thing but one of the paintings in the living room changes to show that clue
    And as well the journal isn't just extra stuff that doesn't do much but it provides insight into things you should consider doing in the gameplay as well

    The silent teleportation becomes INCREDIBLY obvious in the basement/first floor of the starting house, I think that's even how they get the two-story effect (something not normally possible in DOOM) because if you stay by the basement/first floor door and go back up the stairs after opening it, it closes instantly. No animation or noise, just the door appearing closed within the blink of an eye.

    Just a correction at 11:21, you can only pick up the blue key card if you haven't gone out and around the house after getting the red key, or you'll teleport to the new version of the house and the blue key card will no longer be available to you. I'd suggest grabbing the blue key card before attempting to go towards the soulsphere because it will be necessary at a later point for obtaining a weapon.

    Mid-video comment: The game's idea is a huge reference to an absolutely brilliant novel, "House Of Leaves" especially when the house dissappears and it says Navidson on the sale sign, the name of the family from the book. Just finished reading the book, it's an absolute mindfook, with pages mostly blank except for one word at points, and entire paragraph arrangements phasing into each other. But if you can handle that, I highly recommended the book, get the colored edition because it makes some of the pictures seen by the end of the book cooler to look at.
    Post video edit: Glad to see that the book was mentioned. It is rumored that Tom and Steven were actually spouses or partners, so that crib Easter egg makes sense considering how much gay couples struggle to adopt a kid.

    6:00 about the doomcute: thats a term for thinks that are from the "real world" brought into doom through the map editor. (e.g. that playstation/xbox)
    The thing is a homage to house of leaves, the things added to the outside of the actual map is given some context with that.
    BTW; did you know every map shares a layout with the keycard? the house is in the shape of the keycard as well. the keys are in the places of the gold on the keycard too

    House of Leaves came out in 2000. This is the original "liminal space". This is the only book that gave me vivid nightmares that required some medication to take care of. I highly highly highly recommend it. The dimensions of your room might be off by a quarter inch from the inside, which wont match the outside, but hey! Dont worry about it, make a vodka tonic and stop thinking like an adult. Mark Z. Danielewski created the baseline for such storylines / games such as the backrooms, etc. You are stripped of that invisible safety blanket you never knew you had about such simple things making sense. Please read this book. the nightmares are worth it. I would highly recommend any book by Stanislaw Lem, a Polish novelist from the early sci-fi era. I have no doubt Danielewski had some inspiration from Stanislaw Lem; but nihilistic travel into spaces beyond our imaginations is sadly becoming a trope. People always said Watchmen was an "unfilmable story". Maybe you didn't like Watchmen, but there are quite a lot of Danielewski fans who would line up overnight for a true cinematic recreation of the schizophrenic warped nightmare that is House of Leaves. It is my favorite book of all time. This game has so many subtle nods to house of leaves, this was definitely a passion project and I really enjoyed the small details. GET THE BOOK! READ IT! GET NIGHTMARES! KEEP READING IT! READ IT ANNUALLY THROUGH YOUR TIME IN COLLEGE I PROMISE YOU WONT HAVE NIGHTMARES (frequently sometimes). Also I'm pretty sure the "Minotaur" in House of Leaves is just MZD reminding us that Ted Cruz is not only the Zodiac Killer but also a minotaur that lives in liminal spaces so he doesn't need to hear the disappointment from his daughters.
