yes that's true ... real women are loosing there rights to men who claim to be women. for example it is becoming more common for men to be competing against women in female-only sports. This is completely unfair. male athletes who claim to be women are now competing with women in female sports. this is a volition of women's rights and equal competition. it is an insult. the main goal of 'feminism' should be for women to stand there ground against trans extremism. trans women will never be women. Until society can acknowledge this, biological women will continue to loose their rights to men who claim to be women. the misogyny couldn't get any worse...

I hate it so much when people are like "you're emotionally invested in this to have a rational discussion". I agree that rational discussion is very important but to say that emotional investment negates rational discussion is just wrong. Yes, sometimes emotional investment can cloud your judgement but in certain circumstances it can also inform your judgement. I, as a queer woman in a third world country am emotionally invested in women's rights, human rights, and queer rights all over the globe. My emotional investment in the topic is what motivates me to learn more and be more understanding to the experiences of not just women and queer people but also other marginalized people.

Word. I was very disappointed to hear that the Cosmic Sceptic acted like that because I've seen some of his videos on other subjects and I liked them very much. I hope he changes his attitude in this matter. Also the argument that a woman can't possibly be objective in a matter pertaining to women's rights is ridiculous: logically you could apply it to every other issue and state that people affected by it are not qualified to speak about it objectively. By that virtue race minorities shouldn't be involved in discussions about racism, poor people shouldn't be involved in discussions about economic inequality, parents shouldn't be involved in discussions about child-rearing conditions etc. Being completely detached from an issue doesn't necessarily make you more objective about it, sometimes it just makes you blind to the full realities of it.

It is ridiculous to expect to not be invested in sth that has huge implications and impacts on your Life and health. But it's quite Common in some spaces to place so much emphasis on emotional detachment, that any topic that stirs a Response is immediately dismissed as "too emotional". Which is funny considering that the same people usually get Mad when i poke at sth that THEYRE invested in, and suddenly theyre allowed to get mad.
I had a bunch of discussions with my dad where i was "too emotional" (speaking with emphasis) about a topic concerning women, but He would almost scream at me when i made a general Statement about white middleclass men (think: "aaah, yes, we are ALL evil!" Which i never Said in that entire conversation btw, i was talking about structural issues that He, as a White middleclass Guy, wouldnt notice. Not about mens supposed evilness). Funny how that Anger was justified but my emotional Investment never is.

as someone living in the middle east, i find it so odd when people say they dont need feminism. if there are women out there that prefer that type of lifestyle, fine, but it baffles me when they say that they don't need it. it was only a few years ago that women got the rights to drive in Saudi. girls and women in Iran are still suffering. there's this whole other part of the world that gets looked over and that's so behind on its equal rights that they don't even want to acknowledge it. boggles the mind and disheartening.

I’ve had that exact kind of abortion conversation happen. I remember being like 15 on a trip, and one night while sitting with a couple guys, one of them just out of the blue asked if we wanted to discuss whether abortion should be allowed. (Mind you, I was the only one with a uterus in that group) he litterally said the reason he wanted to discuss it was because he felt so smart and mature having that kind of conversation completely impartially/unemotionally. And I remember trying to engage with them, but every time I spoke there would be eyerolls and muttered ‘here we go’s’ and it was extremely obvious they wanted me to get emotional so they could dismiss me entirely. And at that point I realized they didn’t want to actually think critically about it or potentially have their minds changed. They just wanted to have a ‘fun’ thought experiment that could forget about the second they stopped talking about it because those hypotheticals would never affect them, in order to feel oh so mature about them selves. And because of that, I, and anyone else with a uterus, would never actually be truly allowed into their conversations because they didn’t want to hear personal points or experiences. They wanted it to be a completely detached from reality mind teaser.

The issue is that you can treat the term feminism in this case like the term 'racial equality'. You don't end up needing less racial equality if things become more equal. Unless you're referring to feminism as the movement. In which case, you might be able to argue that BLM would be less necessary as we became more equal. In which case I would agree. The main distinction is that, in reality, things are not equal. Some rights may have been protected, but racism and sexism didn't magically go away. They permeate culture and affect a lot of things. Just because gay marriage is legal now doesn't mean LGBTQ+ people aren't being heavily discriminated against. Just because black POC can vote and have some protections, the systemic and interpersonal discrimination they face still pervade society. Things don't just get better in such a short period. Conservatives still want me dead.

" I get to go to university and my father allows me a lot of liberties, I don't know why I should care about feminism or that other women don't go to university because their fathers chose to not let them go. " This brain rot festers when a person lacks perspective and has an inflated sense of self-importance.

The manosphere is accepting of no-one, it's just a tool to encourage people to be worse to other human beings. It's not a coincidenence that many gay men who live in isolated communities often feel safer around women, but lesbians also feel safer around women, and generally speaking most trans people unless they are faced with a trans exclusionary "feminist" group. These days most TERFs side with misogynistic movements anyway, I don't believe they were ever real feminists to begin with. No true feminist would marginalise a trans man.

I find it extra odd when people who say "we don't need feminism anymore" want to have kids because having kids really shows how much feminist activism is still needed. Look at access to parental leave and affordable childcare or setbacks in the workforce when people have kids (skipped over for promotions because your boss thinks you could take maternity leave at any point in time, or being denied employment because of a working gap for child care or not being hired.) And how many women say the don't need to a feminist and then are stressed out when their male SO doesn't do equal work around the house or with childcare?
Also, kids don't just understand equality magically. So many girls and boys are bullied everyday by other kids whose parents just assumed their kids would not tease other kids based on sexist ideas like making fun of a boy for like "girls things" and vice versa. And to this day girls are even made fun of for liking girly things because of sexism that says girly things are silly!

Also, I hope that if you are against mothers working, you are for providing total live funding through the government to all women who ever became mothers. Otherwise you are advocating for child poverty, which would be actual child neglect.

Sadly i can see no future in which any government will ever care about motherhood. This is why marriage is such a good thing. A woman needs a man to help her in life. The support, love and kindness from a good husband is something every mother needs in order to bring up a child. There is no better person for a child than a mother. this is the basic laws of nature. in the animal kingdom the baby will always cling to its mother. the maternal, instinctual bond between a mother and a baby is the magic of nature. some can call this magic but really it's just biology. feminism is broken because it fails to understand basic biological principals.

I am happy that you agree that economic stability is important for children. You already recognized that some governments are not really great at that. The US is especially horrible in that department. In western europe it is much more protected to stay home with your child. But mostly for one maybe two years.
Your conclusion is, that while the support by the state is limited, the support of a husband will work out great, and so moms do not need a job. I strongly disagree. That decision is fine for maybe up to 3 years, but staying out of the job for longer for women and their children is highly risky.
      1. In case of medical issues (or death) of the sole breadwinner, the whole family income is lost and their partner has been out of the job market for so long, it will be nearly impossible to make up for it.
      2. Marriages often do not last forever. In case of divorce, women might run into huge problems. Some men just do not pay child support in that case. And finding a job can become nearly impossible. Let alone one that pays well.
      3. If there is a huge difference in power within a relationship that unfortunately often leads to abuse, as the disadvantage partner has no/little means to fight back. I would count one person earning all the money the other person needs to live as one such situation. There is statistical evidence to back it up.
      4. Women are 80% of people who are hit by poverty in their old age. The major reason for that is not working during large parts of their lives. Children are not the guarantor of a care free old live many people hope they could be.
      Now to your other point:
Comparison to nature is fun, but ultimately really useless in telling us about the "natural" role of mothers.
Even within mammals there are amazing mothers (e. g. elephants), but also horrible ones (rabbits, black bears, panda bears). The second group often leaves their children alone for most of the time or outright kills them, if there are too many. So talking about nature in this context, is really not the good point you think it is.
When we look at our closest relatives in fact they often have some kind of "daycare" system. Children are raised by the community. When we look into how likely it was for women to die when giving birth, it is highly likely that this is the "natural" way humans raised their children. So, if we want to go natures route, having grandparents and other adults involved might actually be the more natural way to raise children.

Honestly, child marriage is another good example of making it illegal doesn't make it non-existent, it just moves it underground. My country has made child marriage illegal since I believe 1960s and the legal age of marriage is 20 for both. Still, my country has so many young kids, boys and girls alike, married before they reach 18 and sometimes when they are a literal child. I know so many of my friends whose friends have been married at 16 or 18 or as soon as they turn 20. There have been instances on the news where children younger than 10 are being married to each other. It's not hard to imagine how many cases of child marriage have gone unreported when some still manage to make headlines.
And while child marriage affects both the boy and the girl, the girl has to suffer more as she is made to leave school in most cases and do household chores and tend to her husband and in-laws. So many get pregnant so young. And repeatedly. And the cycle continues.
Also, I apologize for my cis-heteronormative language but these kids are neither allowed to explore their gender nor their sexuality as far as I know. And parents are not going to wed their son with a boy or their daughter with a girl. So yeah.

      @Saphia_ Рік тому +2

@@G.D.G. It is, at least to an extent. Now, I cannot say if that practice is significant in scripture or if it's just people being misogynists as we are not pressured or even encouraged to read scriptures that much. But, the religious aspect is that parents are believed to ascend to heaven if their daughter is married off before she gets her first period. There's also the social aspect where people consider daughters worthless because "she'll go to her husband's house anyway" and so, raising and educating her is considered a waste. Men here (not all, but a lot) also don't want a wife who has got a higher education or earns more than him so parents marry off their daughters earlier because that means she'll get married for sure. If dowry is still prevalent in that place, men also ask for more dowry the more the woman is educated. So marrying off the girl at a very young age means less financial burden for the parents and a more malleable daughter-in-law for the in-laws.
As far as I can see, while some people will be motivated to give their daughters for child marriage due to religious reasons, I think social and cultural aspects play a bigger role here. Most people here are less "this is what the scriptures say" and more "this is what has been done for ages" or "what will others think if I do this". The last one is a valid fear though as people have been ostracized for going out of societal norms and that is basically torture when you're poor and have to rely on the people of your village for everything.

But idk, I expected more people to be compassionate and believe in equal rights for everyone. That illusion broke for me in my first year of high school. Our health teacher asked what we thought feminism was, and most people agreed that it was “angry, blue-haired girls screaming about everything being offensive”. The teacher corrected them, talking about the history of feminism, how it’s needed in other countries still, etc. But I
heard some boys make “triggered feminist” jokes about that teacher for the rest of the year. Ever since then, I’ve been seeing ignorance and dismissal of very important issues since it doesn’t affect them, so it doesn’t matter. I live in Texas, and the amount of people saying that they’re glad for the abortion ban is terrifying. One girl even said to me, if people need an abortion, just go to another state or put it up for adoption. Maybe those are valid options for her. In Asia it doesn't really happen either I think, except maybe in areas with bigger Muslim populations. Circumcising of boys is mainly a thing in Islam and Judaism.
Less energy for boys' circumcision is probably mix of "respecting the culture" and it not being as harmful as the girls' version. Of course some % of boys get complications, leading to their genitals being destroyed in the process, or the boy dying, and unnecessary pain, but if the surgery is successful, there are really no lasting downsides to it.
It mostly comes down to freedom of choice/concent, and the unnecessary risk, while girl's version is just plain barbaric, and always leaves lasting harm. I think in a way, FGM deserves a bit more energy put into it. If you're passive, that's a bigot who's getting no pushback somewhere who now thinks their actions and beliefs are acceptable. We only affect change by being vocal, mobilizing, getting our hands dirty, and being loudly against bigotry and oppression.

Thank you for speaking out, Rachel. To add some updates to what you said about Poland:
    1) last year we had the lowest natural growth rate since WW2. Of course there are many reasons for it and the law that has banned abortions in cases of foetal malformations etc is not the only one, but it certainly doesn't help. Many women are saying that because of that they're much more afraid of getting pregnant than before, even if they would like to have children (a friend of mine was in a very much wanted pregnancy but she ended up having to get an abortion in the Netherlands because the foetus was so malformed).
    2) Even in cases where abortion is technically legal, ie. rape or danger to the woman's life, it's often hard to obtain (especially in rape cases: many doctors will use the "conscience clause" to refuse an abortion and the person has to look for help in other hospitals or sometimes cities. Also, I can only assume that it's not enough to simply say you've been raped, you'd probably have to have it reported to the police etc., which can sometimes be impossible or add to the trauma)
    3) recently the office of a female ob-gyn who openly said that she helped women get abortions (before the ban) was raided and all her patients' records were confiscated
    4) the head of the ruling party that voted the ban in - an old single man who, as far as it is known, has never been in a relationship with a woman - has publicly stated, not too long ago, that the reason we now have a low level of births is because young women "like to get drunk".
    5) a pharmacist called the police on a (male) customer who was trying to purchase a large dose of a drug for his sick horse. The reason? The drug can work as an abortifacient. The man was arrested until the matter was cleared up.
    6) a woman was just sentenced to 30 hours of public work monthly for 8 months because she helped another woman get an abortion pill (it is legal for a pregnant woman to self-administer a pill like that, but it is not legal to HELP a pregnant woman in obtaining abortion). The authorities were informed by the ex-partner of the pregnant woman (she didn't want to keep the pregnancy because he had abused her and she was afraid that having a child will make it more difficult to leave him).

Thank you Rachel for mentioning the situation in Poland, my homeland. Polish government has been gradually tightening up the abortion laws for many years. In 2020, the law has been introduced, that made it illegal to terminate the pregnancy even if the fetus/baby has a severe and permanent disability, or an incurable and life-threatening disease. That caused massive anti-government protests in the entire country, that were the biggest ones since the end of the People's Republic in 1989, some even say they were the biggest in the entire history of Poland. I can confirm, I was there and honestly, I've never seen so many people in one place. After two weeks of protests, police started to arrest the protestors, chase the people who wanted to leave the protests and generally speaking use violence. And all this effort, after 1.5 months of everyday protests (and a couple of days in 2021, after a break), for nothing.
As you said, the new law caused many innocent pregnant women to lose their lives in situations, which initially weren't even that dangerous. Their families were left without the mothers, the wifes, the daughters... How do you explain those orphaned children that their mommy will never come home? How will they feel when they grow up and learn that their mothers' deaths weren't an unfortunate accident, but were deliberately inflicted by the government and could be easily prevented?
Anti-choice people use the word "baby" instead of "fetus" intentionally for emotional manipulation, but I'm gonna do the same. In the cases I've just mentioned these fetuses are the babies. Their families wanted them and couldn't wait to welcome these new little humans in their homes. Humans, that live and feel. And from the very beginning, their dignity is forcefully taken away and they are sentenced to a short life of debilitating pain and suffering, that never stops. And the ones that inflict that suffering are living comfortable life with their friends and families, have money and everything they ever wanted in the very same moment. I can't comprehend, how dare they? How can they look every morning in the mirror and be ok with who they are?
I was very lucky to be privilaged enough to leave Poland and migrate to an actually civilised country. But my heart breaks when I think about all my fellow countrywomen, who couldn't get out of that mess. Having their laws violated is always awful, but it's even worse when you are stuck in a place, where the health system, education and social benefits are a sad joke, but there's never a problem with the money for the church, propaganda and raising politicians' salaries. Some people say that Poland is a country made of shit and cardboard, and I think it's a really good way to sum up everything that's going on there.
I hope that people talk more about the situation in Poland, so there's less people who think that feminism isn't needed anymore. They need to finally open their eyes and see the tragedy that happens just in front of them.

    • @AW-uv3cb

And oh, one more thing: even though the protests didn't help to revert the law, I do think that they have done a lot to change attitudes. Abortion is finally something that's being openly talked about, to the point where the main opposition party under Tusk is now putting it as an electoral issue - something they didn't and would never have done 10 years ago. The crazier ideas the likes of Kaja Godek come up with, the more the majority public opinion, especially young people, swings to a pro-choice stance.

Rachel I love you so much you are such an amazing trans ally I’ve loved watching you grow and learn more about us so much, unfortunately as a trans person in America this video is way too real for me and even just hearing basic support is moving me to tears but anyway I’m just commenting this to let you know that I think you’re amazing. I’ve been stealth by choice for a while now in my real life but now having to be stealth cus it might get me killed if I wasn’t has been bringing me so much anxiety. Trans people are in a genocide and even in our own community people want to focus on things that don’t matter. Conservatives make up scenarios that have never and will never happen (because a man pretending to be a woman to molest children is not a trans woman) to distract from how people are calling for us to be wiped out from existence. How people are trying to use eugenics about us. How Canada has literally opened refugee status for trans people from America. All their made up “what if this happened” is just to justify themselves when they kill us. Whether directly or indirectly every single transphobe is a murderer. Every transphobe has blood on their hands. Every transphobe has metaphorically or literally held a gun to someone’s head, tied someone’s noose, pushed pills down someone’s throat, etc. feminism is just as important to trans people as it is to every single other person it is meant to help, and hearing a cis person actually support us is not something I have heard in *months*. So yeah thank you for once again confirming your status of my favorite youtuber and I rlly hope you see this comment so you can know how much impact you had on at least one trans person

Great work Rachel. I've been watching your videos for years but this one feels special to me.
Men NEED to hear these things and NEED to be feminists. As a bisexual polish man (who's also a feminist and have identified as such for years, but came out about a year ago as bi after years of 'bicuriousity') it is horrifying to witness the lack of empathy and understanding both for women's rights and LGBTQ+ community in Poland. I'm very fortunate to have wonderful women in my closest family (my mom and sister) who are open advocates for women's rights and LGBTQ+, however my 'further family' - aunts, cousins and so on - are very much against it.
The biggest advocates for 'pro-life' in Poland are women. The leader of 'Ordo Iuris' is a woman. A lot of women (both young and old) are openly anti-feminist and anti-LGBTQ+. It's deeply saddening and I'm not sure if this deep-seeded culture of systemic sexism and misogyny will ever change here. I'm not even going to address the transphobic angle of 'traditional values' in Poland, because I don't feel knowledgeable enough in that field.
One more thing - I never got into the topic of FGM, but after this video I've ordered myself an english copy of Wardere's book - and I can't wait to read it.
To all women fighting - keep up your work and stay strong.

When these women say they don't need feminism you can tell how self centered and privileged they are. Having that much tattoos and wearing that kind of clothes come here in my country and people will call you sl*t. At the same time these people are themselves affected by sexism so they think what's they have is too much.
I from India and here even there are some educated women who come from progressive family telling people that how feminism is good and they are not feminist but they believe in gender equality. The irony here is these women come from privilege family background and are daddy's girl mostly and they can't say they are feminist because lots of man can't stand that and they just love to be loved by everyone else so they choose to say they are not feminist.
Another reason is that feminist talk about core problem and how it had affected our society specially women which these people don't like to talk about because their loved ones also had did that ( you know their dear dad had done some of these things to their mother in the early stage of marriage and they can't stand that).

Women have sometimes had great social power in the past, but they were left out of political and economic power. Today women are bank presidents, lawyers, police women, doctors, and politicians. I've encountered a few women who did not want to be in the workforce. There have been countries that have had female heads of state - England, India, Israel, and Pakistan. Violence against women is one issue that has moved to the forefront of the feminist movement. That is probably the most pressing issues for women today.

So many times I've had debates turned into arguments by men, and women who are brainwashed by people like Tate, Pearlythings, the other "red pill/blue pill" people out there who invite people on to their show under false pretences, then proceed to destroy anything they say if it's at all related to feminism.
Yes, misandry exists alongside misogyny - no-one is disputing that, but women across the world are still oppressed far more than men, and this is why we need feminism. To prove that everyone can be respected and on equal footing with each other, regardless of gender, appearance, capability etc.
The only exception I have to this, is criminals who commit horrendous acts. They're scum of the earth.

You'd be hard pressed to say women are generally worse off than men in the USA. Everything that kills you kills men more than women. But it's "our personal choice" so the statistics are LYING to you, there's no issue here. Suicide, homelessness, OD/addiction, isolation, prison, violent crime, etc. all male dominated issues. Women get more shelters, more education, etc. the standard of living bell curve for women is much narrower than the one for men. Men occupy the top and bottom of income, but the difference is most wealthy men have families, so they bring a woman up with them, financially at least. While poor men are single, so women don't suffer along side them at the same rate as they prosper. Which is fine, it's choice and free will, nothing to get in the way of. But let's not pretend that women are getting shafted more so than men in the USA.

As a survivor of male genital mutilation (MGM, more commonly referred to as male circumcision), I appreciated that you mentioned that any form of genital mutilation is unethical and would like to see a follow-up video where you discuss it specifically. MGM is equivalent to level 4 FGM at the very least (if not level 3).
No form of permanent, irreversible bodily modification should be forced on a minor, unless there is an urgent and VALID medical need.
Unfortunately, in the United States, MGM is not only widely practiced by the Jewish and Muslim communities under the shield of religious freedom and cultural tradition, but the medical community (which makes bank performing the insurance-covered procedure and then selling the “donated,” stem-cell-rich tissue to the highest bidder) falsely paints it as medically beneficial, minimally painless and unaffecting sexual function (none of which is true).
Because of this medical complicity, if you’re AMAB in the United States, you’re likely going to be mutilated within days or even hours of birth, regardless of your religion or culture. Most Americans, for a variety of terrible reasons, just consider MGM “the thing to do.” As a survivor (who also happens to be Jewish), that institutionalized enthusiasm for cruelty makes me physically ill.

As a white woman, I’ve been sexually harassed walking down the street, sexually assaulted on a tube, and now I’m disabled I find I can’t say something to a dr and they will totally ignore me, yet if my ex-husband said it, they’d listen straight away. Oppression exists for every woman, the gender pay gap and the glass ceiling for one. However, other women in different communities and parts of the world experience oppression in a totally different way. It means thinking of their experiences, understanding them, understanding their beliefs and culture.

I have full on rights in every spot in my life, especially since im more "aggressive" in getting what I want. I need feminism more then anything, for my sisters in less progressive countries. If any women in this world doesnt have the same freedom as me - my fights not done.

It's so sad to hear my country, Honduras, stand out this way, and although things have gotten a bit better and more action is getting asked from our first female president, there's so much left to do.
Thanks so much for this video.

I live in Canada and at my old job I got told that a woman's purpose in life is to have kids all the time. I was told my a city official at a job fair that he doesnt hire young women because they will want to get married and have kids. Inequality still exists in the west 😂 women literally dont have control over their bodies in the US

Hey Rachel! I know you said that you are going to expand and talk about more topics later but I wanted to ask you to talk about how the masculine perspective is still so predominant in every society and in the way international sociopolitical dynamics are still looked at through the mindset of men and their perspective, even as women take on politcal positions they are still persuing a masculinistic ideas of whow the world should be organized.

10:14 thank you for bringing this up. a lot of people ignore the struggles of trans masculine people when it comes to feminism. it can be dysphoria inducing as a trans man to acknowledge that you are also affected by misogyny in some way. to any other transmascs out there reading this, experiencing misogyny doesn't make you a woman.

Of course the stated goal of feminism is to "help women". However, I think too many people forget how much feminism would help men as well. Many MRA (men's rights activists, who are usually anti-feminist) talking points are things about how men are more likely to be incarcerated, serve longer sentences, suffer workplace injuries, and are less likely to win child custody suits than women are. But they don't realize that these things are the direct result of patriarchal policies and prejudices. Feminism helps men too!

Feminists have no interest in helping men. This entire hour long video ignores mens issues, completely. Xeno-gender is a higher priority than the male suicide rate. Absolutely absurd. From a utilitarian perspective, the death and violence men face is far more pressing than any issue 0.01% of the population could face.

But who keep reinforcing those patriarchal policies and prejudices? Both sexes, specifically feminists by reinforcing the harmful stereotypes that men are the oppressors as well as shaming them for being vulnerable by gaslighting them to believe they are “privileged” whenever they speak out about their issues. Plus, feminists have no intention of making the laws gender mutual as they are really about punishing men while giving leniency towards women.

The STEM field (particularly engineering) is EXTREMELY dominated by men, and most women who enter engineering quit within 5 years. Much higher rates than any other career field.

I had a moment reading Bell Hooks' "The Will to Change". That helped make a big connection between feminism and masculinity/ men. I already supported feminist values, but didn't know those extended in to "hey, maybe men can be vulnerable and human cause, ya know, they are".

Genuinely the hardest thing I've ever had to listen to. I was aware of FGM as a practice, but I never knew the extent or scope. It's easy to think something is bad in the abstract but hearing it described in detail made me so ill it became a little harder to focus on driving. Just horrible. Thanks for the insight. I'm not sure why the issue isn't discussed more
