  • Using the Glasgow Coma Scale in the care of the trauma patient is key to treatment and successful outcomes. As you are preparing for the ATLS 10th Edition protocol and certification exam, committing the Glasgow Coma Scale [GCS] to memory is extremely helpful in determining the correct answer to the ATLS test questions.
The Glasgow Coma Scale is arrived at by scoring a person's eye opening, verbal, and motor responses to a variety of stimuli. Signs of Basilar Skull Fracture include Racoon Eyes, Battle's Sign, Rhinorrhea, Otorrhea, Facial Paralysis, and Hearing Loss.
Many doctors, nurses, PA's, residents, and EMT's that cover the ER (emergency room) in many hospitals are required to learn the ATLS protocol concerning the Glasgow Coma Scale and Head Trauma and pass the ATLS certification exam.
