Splendid video. I'm a recently widowed elderly, Military Air Force Veteran with several disabilities and a new Harley Davidson Trike owner. Your video is a fountain of information for motorcycle owners/riders of my caliber need to absorb. Thank you
Arriving at my buddy's house after a 36 hrs, 1600 mile trip, things were okay, until I laid down. Twenty-five minutes later, both calves starting cramping really bad. I was dehydrated. I chugged a couple 12 oz. bottles of Gatorade he had on hand and within minutes I was okay again. This Rider is spot-on with experiences and riders' tips. This is a very valuable channel for those planning long trips. For monitoring, I have map sharing with Google maps so family knows where I am.
Thanks for the Mustard tip Tall! I don't drink alcoholic beverages but when I Jump outta bed with these excruciating pains of Cramped legs, I have a bottle of Jack Daniels Whiskey which kills cramps immediately by taking one shot! Now I don't need Jack! Just Mr. Mustard! Lol!!!
Thank you, Tall. Great advice. Some really good advice. If I might add something in place of a carrying a rag, is to carry a towel (old times riders always do), and a pack of wipes, 1st aid kit.
Memphis is looking BEAUTIFUL sittin out in the sun. 😍💙 Of course the Street Glide always beautiful too, but that blue... 💙💙 & we can not forget the beautiful pup at the end. 😍🐶
I listened to your video about things to carry on a long distance ride . I have been riding Harley’s since 2007 and no one has ever explained to me the things to carry on road trips. Thank you.
Thanks for the video. As usual, your vids are well done and informative. I'd like to add 1 thing to you essentials... chap stick. People forget to protect their lips from wind burn.
Have used the small packets of mustard when playing sports and they are really great for relieving cramps almost instantly. Nicest thing about it is those small packets don’t cost anything-just pick some up at your favorite fast food place on your next order. Great video.
What a great idea, I would prefer the small packs too...save space and free... I must spread the word to riding buddies about this, Thanks, Good channel and I subscribed too, just now
Great common sense advice there! One other thing that I carry is my stock shift linkage. The first thing I do when I purchase a bike is upgrade the shift linkage. I will then carry the stock ship linkage with me. Because it takes up very little room and invariably someone in your group somewhere along the line will have their's fail and with the simple tools that you can carry, it can be a pretty quick roadside fix. I also carry a tire plug kit. And small air pump so I can make it to a dealership to get another tire.
Yeah it’s some great tips there. I’ve been riding cross country for the last 14 years since my wife passed away. For example, last year I left Homosassa Florida and April 15. I went out to Lake Mead pulling my camper behind a bike I camped in Lake Mead, and then I went back to New York State with my other daughter, lives to spend the summer.
Just found your channel, I’m a pack rat on a tri-glide so I completely understand about carrying extras lol. Another trick on Zip Tye’s is you can put them around your tires in the snow for a bit of extra traction. They will break and you’ll ride out of them so carry plenty of them lol. Be safe
Ugh, the lost wallet. That's almost like losing a part of your life. Crippling. You're 100% right, though... Pics of your DL, cards added in cellphone "wallet" & watch. I've gone to a front pocket wallet. An amazon knockoff of "The Ridge". Keeping a couple bucks on the bike is a good idea, too. Also, one of those little rechargeable air compressors. I have the pressures Sharpied on a strip of masking tape, right inside the saddlebag lid, next to the spare keyfob battery. Thanks for the great tips!
Some of the best information I've heard for distance traveling on a motorcycle!! I think a "how to" video on to properly jump start a motorcycle would be very helpful. I've had to do a couple times and the first time was a disaster since I tried jumping the bike using a car!! It took screwing up my bike to learn how to jump start correctly.
It is fine to use a car to jump start a bike, the only thing you MUST do, make sure car motor is NOT running, this way you are using only 12 Volts, same as bike. There is too much power coming from car alternator if car motor is running...just saying
Great advice! One of the things I carry as well is a portable air compressor by Lexin. It's compact, helps inflate a tire if the fix-a-flat can runs out, AND if you've stopped for about 30 or so minutes you can recharge your Sena headset.
I love your videos that cover many topics. Harley Davidson motorcycles no matter the year are overly hot , overly labor intensive 1950’s/1960’s technology no matter the new fancy paint jobs. All other manufacturers have ride modes, better screen technology, liquid cooling and full counter balancing. HD’s Revolution Max format is that upgrade that’s coming like it or not due to ease of maintenance like single oil fill and 1 hole draining.
Yes; it does help. As a retired High School teacher and swim coach, my swimmers would get leg and toe cramps..... the solution...? yup.... a small packet of mustard. I would always keep a few packets in my pocket. Weird, I know.
We use life 360 to track my kids as well! Great app to have for traveling for safety reasons as well like you stated! Im not into helmets much but bought one for my ride to Sturgis from Ohio. After this trip I do appreciate and see the benefits of wearing one for long trips! Its a must! I didnt feel as beat up and fatigued from the sun and wind. Great info here, great video
kinda been a good thing that so far i haven't needed to use the tool bag i keep with me but the last two years at Sturgis there's been at least two times that someone else though benefited the fact of the tool bag and what all i keep in it..which one is a portable air pump that i didn't recall you mentioning and i recommend being not every gas station these days has air pumps or has them in working order. I also carry a very small 3/8s socket set that has both standard and metric sockets nothing big and grand but does have enough sockets to cover the bolts that many find on bikes just in case. I actually had to use my jump pack i bought and keep at the Chip last year because i forgot to unplug the drone battery charger before turning in for the night and killed the battery. enjoyed the ride videos across from cali. Stay safe.
Thank You for your Channel. Planning Road trip to Montana from Monterey Bay California this August for Wedding. Your Infor. Very helpful 👍 L&R BROTHER 🤟 I Ride 2019 Road Glide. At 75 Year's Young ., 🤟🏻
Hello Tall, just found you channel and love you videos, One thing I want to pass along is , if you reside in a state that has helmet law and you travel to a state that does not, and you remove your helmet and get in an accident your insurance may not cover you. Keep up the videos my friend!
Great tips. Just ordered the Custom Dynamics Safety Road Flare as well as the Redline Fuel System Cleanser. Also added a picture of my Tennessee drivers license to my phone. Speaking of phones I always carry a phone charger with me as well.
Great vid Tall! John Maxwell has a vid on how to find your service code. My bike went into limp mode, I found my code, called my mechanic & he told me to do what you said in the video! Also carry batteries for your key fob. Could be a simple & cheap fix if your bike won’t start. I change my fob battery every spring.🤙
One thing i didn’t see mentioned and should be carried is a 1 gallon saddle bag gas can. Sometimes gas stations can be spread out miles in remote locations
Thank you! On hot days we freeze our water bottles and have cold water. I like and never heard of the mustard trick, but it is something I am going to try to remember when winter mellows out here.
I have life 360 and that’s great unless you loose cell tower reception which happens more than you think. I also carry the Garmin 60i satellite phone. It never looses connection and my wife and loved ones I count on to track my progress as I venture across country. I highly recommend having a satellite phone. It keeps you connected anywhere on the planet!
You had me with the cramps and mustard!! Very painful at night and mustard is my first choice. thanks for the video and very extensive and great ideas. thanks again.
I surely hope you’re being compensated for your suggestion because I ordered two items while watching this viewed. Thank you very much, and also I really enjoyed your ride from SoCal (my home) back to Knoxville.
Tall that would be a good connection to put a dab of dielectric compound in . You can buy small mustard size packets at part stores . If you wash your bike often , reapply.
Great tips and video... Thank you for making the point that while H-D specific, a lot of what you talked about can be applied to any given situation with any type of bike.
You were talking about the night cramp when riding. I used to get them to so bad it kept me up all night and I would take the sleeves of pickle juice freezer pops not frozen work good also. But the best thing I have found is coconut water I have never had cramps again. Take one small bottle a day.
I have a vitamin bottle of potassium i use for cramps. But mustard is great too. Great tips. Portable air pump is nice to have if you changing temperatures a lot. Seems i had to add air every day one trip.
carry some dielectric grease and a small can of WD40 to display the water from electrical connectors and use the dielectric grease to water proof the electrical connection afterwards.
Learned something new about mustard. Might have to get some individual packets to keep on the bike. Grab a few extra at the food stops. Don’t think I’ll keep a big old bottle. LOL
In the south I would add a little tube of bug repellent, if you are stuck on the shoulder waiting for help the meskitoes can pack you off. Not a big can of off spray, just enough for emergencies.
Awesomeness, keep on keeping on. Wear lighter colors on clothes and PPE. I use a camel hump full of ice, cools and hydrates. Thanks for your videos, two wheels down, be safe
Personal experience i use the military goretex pants and jacket for rain and wind. Wind wont cut through it. Pick some up at a surplus of camo suits you.
Instead of mustard, give Country Time Lemonade singles. It has electrolytes but less sugar than sports drinks. When I did brick work I'd drink one with each meal. Except my first day, I never caught a cramp.
Just recently started watching your videos really enjoy the information that you're giving out I'm a relatively new Rider I've been riding for a couple of years I own a 2022 Street Glide with the 107 m appreciate what you doing keep up the good work looking forward to seeing more of your videos
@@TravelingTall You did do that long ride on the Indian with stock pipes. I’ve found that my loud pipes are fine around town and short in state rides. Those 1000 mile plus rides with loud pipes really play on your comfort factor, especially when wearing a full face or modular helmet as the helmet amplifies the pipes. I’m fortunate that I kept my stock pipes, had them reworked by American Custom Exhaust, and use their baffle system for my long rides. When I get home, the V&H pipes go back on. Nice informative vlog dood. Thanks
What helps me sleep in a motel, is to use a baby monitor. Placing it inside & on top of the stuff in a saddle bag lets me hear everything that goes on around my bike. I've noticed that they now have monitors with video. Might be helpful, idk.

Another suggestion, a small roll bailing wire if for example an exhaust pipe comes loose and is hanging down
Dude! That Mustard trick? I get cramps not even riding lol can’t wait to try it.
