  • Today we share our huge new commercial composting area. It's a classic 3-bin composting area with lots and lots of space to make TONS of compost!

Composting on a household scale is easy - but what about on a larger scale? We need to make lots of compost for our plant nursery, so CJ and Sam built us a big concrete compost bin capable of making tons of compost a year. We're using it for composting chicken, restaurant waste, coffee ground, peanut waste and more.

After coffee and doughnuts at church Sunday, I dared to route through the upper part of a trash can for the half eaten doughnuts...didn't do enough to agitate onlookers. Ended up tossing it directly to happy chickens. Slow track instead of fast track to the compost pile.

I bring a small trash bin to the cafeteria when I do lunchroom duty at school. The kids know if they don't want to eat their food, they can feed my chickens instead of throwing it in the trash cans. They always rush to be the first kids to put their scraps in the bucket. The students always enjoy seeing pictures of my 'Laying Ladies,' too.

Those bends sure tidy up the place. I don't have compost binds myself due to lack of ambition and being lazy. My method for composting is also to compost everything. I just add to the pile for one year and never turn it or concern myself with brown or green material mixture. I start a new one every year and leave them alone until the 3rd year. The compost I use for my garden is always from the 3 year old pile. It sure makes the garden grow and the food I get is better than anything I have bought from the store.

hen you cut off your beard, you just lost at least 10 years...went back in time! I guess I'd not see the last few videos. Last Sunday at church someone brought their expresso machine to treat people to strong coffee. I handed them a container and said, "May I please have your coffee grounds for my compost?" They were happy to give them to me. After it was over, I brought them home and immediately put them on my compost pile before I even went into the house.

I just processed a bunch of chickens today. All the scraps were dumped into a hole I dug next to a young pecan tree that I planted this year. I came out a few feet with the scraps so I didn’t burn it up. So now that tree has a pocket of fertility breaking down right next to it. I dumped the blood in one of my asparagus beds. I watered it down so it would soak in. I’m thinking about burning the scraps next time so they break down faster.

A few years ago when we had one dog I thought geez look at all that money (dog food) sitting on the lawn so I decided to compost her poop. Now we have 3 dogs. I use an old garbage can with a lid and holes in the bottom. Toss in the poop and cover with leaves. When that can is full I just leave it for 6 months and the worms move in and help out. Put the resulting compost on my lawn and flower beds. Win, win. 😊

I compost small amounts of meat (and my chicken who died), but bears are a notorious problem around here. As in, one finds scat in the back yard. So I bury it deep and usually only small amounts. After I buried the chicken, the cantaloupe scraps buried nearby sprouted and produced huge plants, faster than I've ever seen anything grow!

Hey, here's an idea you might use for bones, if you're interested. I've started using all my bones to make bone broth. Afterwards, they're a lot softer, and break easily. I get more food out of the bones, and then the bones will break down into compost in my compost pile faster! Perfect!

    • @davidthegood
      @davidthegood  10 місяців тому +1

I would have to make broth in mammoth quantities, though! We're talking 18 banana boxes of chicken bones a week. You are right - it does break down wonderful however.

@@davidthegood Aw, c'mon! You know you want to spend the rest of your life making bone broth! What are you, chicken? (Laugh.)
More seriously, that makes sense. That's a LOT of bones. I'm sure if I had that many available all the time, I'd just compost the vast majority of them, too.

We have taken in many stray cats at our ranch. We tame them and get them fixed. We now have 15! They are indoors a lot of the time. I have been using equine pine pellets for the litter boxes for years because before we ended up with a cat litter clay mountain. The pine pellets saved me probably a thousand dollars per year plus they impart a fresh cut wood fragrance, way less dust, no chalky smell, and no mountain since it does decompose. They do a great job controlling odor until they completely turn to saw dust. Then I dump & spread them in the fields. But twice a day I scoop out the solid waste which goes to the landfill. Could all of it be composted? Could it become soil that is safe for gardens or any use at some point?

I’m confused by the elaborate concrete foundation. Is it not better for the compost to have direct contact with the soil?

I’d also like to know the difference (if any) between foundation and ground contact for a bin system. Would definitely be easier to clean out this way.

I have tried both ways. The big downside with a bed that is open on the bottom is that nearby trees help themselves and turn the pile into a mass of roots.

David, ur reply to the using a concrete/block structure is so right 👍! I just harvested my 1yr static "ground"pile & the bottom half was clogged full of roots & grubs. 2 afternoons of back breaking sifting out. Evidently it wasn't far enough away from neighbors trees & grape vines. Great job by those hard working young men u've got there..well done.

Always wondered which Caribbean island you were at before. Watched some of those videos and I was left with a feeling of Jamaica (based on some of the things I saw you plant - not that I am a gardener/farmer/pro). Today I clearly heard Granada. Obviously I wasn't here since the start but now I know. Greetings from Puerto Rico!!!

I have found making compost where I plan to put in a garden bed, the compost proses really kills off weeds and grasses. Will build a compost room place when I have filled up all my bed spaces. Also local breweries have great material to add into your compost
