Great pod. I have a young family, 3 kids, very limited time to practice. I jammed my bag full of hybrids, 4 through 7 (yes a 7 hybrid 31 degrees) and its taken all the stress off my long game. And I just don't care that it's unconventional anymore. When I'm in a different life stage and have loads of time for lessons and practice, then I can always swap more irons back in (probably only the 6 and 7 anyway). I'm having the most fun ever and making ridiculous shots sticking greens from 160+ yards out with frequency, because of the hybrids. Now I'm focusing all my energy on improving my short game, especially wedge shots around the green. Getting a way bigger return now that the long end of the bag is sorted out and easier to get along with. Been playing seriously for 3 years (started at age 40,lol), broke 90 last year, but have no hope of breaking 80 for many years to come, so I might as well maximize my fun!
Absolute banger of an episode. Lovely tips for a high handicapper like myself - 18Ms introduced to the game & an 18 handicapper. For all full shots, I struggle with the correct posture at setup. The butt end of the club falling just above the kneecap is a really good tip for anyone with the same issue & is helping me immensely. Also, I feel the choice between a 54/ 56/ 58/ 60 often comes down to the kind of bounce. My 60 is nice and fat & helps make the bunker shot automatic. My 56 is a slim shady, and helps with lobs and chips in tight lies…
For most high handy cap players the G or A wedge is the last forgiving cavity back wedge in the set. Something still comfortable under full swing. Then if you have a sand and lob you likely won’t full swing either. Your guys take on high handy caps going from pitch to sand and not having 4 wedges is not going to help lower scores lol.
Many years ago , Cyril JH Tolley teed off from the 1st at Crowborough Beacon in East Sussex, putted out on the 18th at Eastbourne Downs approximately 25 miles away, as the crow flies, probably impossible now, because of new road systems and housing. As a challenge, it must be possible in Scotland to truly play cross country 1st hole one course, to the 18th on another, or get really challenging, 1st on one to 9th on another, then 10th to 18th on yet another course, would need some planning and perhaps some local school children to do the mapping and assist with safety. The publicity would be immense, Tolley made the national press, it took so long, he putted out under car headlamps on the 18th in Eastbourne. The cross country element, would create real interest in other countries, whilst also being a blast.
Two reasons they aren’t improving without hearing a word yet. 1- they have never taken a lesson and will never swing the club correct. 2- they are playing game improvement irons way too long, which will never challenge them to get better. They may very slowly improve, but nothing like they would if they played with an iron that atleast takes some skill to hit. My first set was a cavity back no name brand that has a sole width as narrow as any players iron today. I got them in 1997 as a 17 year old. I played golf on and off over the next 10 years. Then stopped until early this year. So over 15 years without playing, might as well never have played. But I went out and got fitted into p790. I’m not a big guy by any means and I was hitting them 180yds at sea level after not swinging a club in 15 years and honestly little play over the 10 years I even did play. I’m already moving into the 770 and probably a split set with the CBs. I honestly believe it’s all because the irons I learned on, were the furthest thing from forgiving and they forced me to learn how to hit them
Most folk that buy driver surely get fitted? If they do, most amateurs would end up in the max or draw bias version of drivers, if you can’t hit those, you need lessons desperately.

The sort of mates you describe aren't friends
A doszy?

The reason they are not improving is because they are not swinging the club. You need to swing the club.
Matt..this is utterly brilliant.
Thanks!
