    According to the original Arthurian legend, Merlin put the sword in the stone. It was meant to serve as a magical paternity test - only the son of the true king could pull it out & become king. Arthur pulled it out, then broke it in a fight with the first dude that challenged the validity of his success. Then Merlin took Arthur to the lake so the Lady in the Lake could give him Excaliber.

    And in Harry Potter they say that Merlin was in Slytherin.
    and they make a Order of Merlin to a Wizard or a witch that did a good deed.
    so what do you think about that ?

    Cool how you pieced it together from The Sword in the Stone alone. I wish you would have been aware of Arthurian legend as a huge literary genre, so that you could point out how it fits with your theory, and recommend it to your viewers. The Crystal Cave, The Mists of Avalon, The Once and Future King... I've read dozens of books, all unique authors' takes on the same legend; they're endlessly entertaining. For people who like this movie, I definitely recommend becoming an Arthurian fangirl.

    This theory got me thinking, does Merlin have similar powers as a Time Lord or was born in the "future" (like modern times or years from now), moving backwards and forwards in time? By the way you framed Merlin in this, it would make sense...

    I love your videos. You have amazing theories. This one, as rare as it is, actully follows the legend of Arthur Pendragon, aka king arthur of the round table. It is said that after Uther died, Merlin placed the sword intp the stone to make sure that only the rightful ruler, the only son or direct decendant of Uther Pendrago, would become king.

    I had no idea those were left over pencil marks. I just thought it was the style of "animation" for this story. It does give a different feel than the other "cleaner" Disney movies don't you think?

    I can tell that he sees the future because he said "electricity" in the film but it's not invented till the late 1800s long after when the film takes place. And he has the Americas in the globe and it's not discovered by Europe until 1000 and the film takes place around 500 a.d! so that means he time travels.

    "The Sword in the Stone", it is even the name of said book, putting it in an anvel is just... What the hell, Disney?
    The worst part is that i hadn't noticed it until now, and we're talking about a *really* old-a** movie, so i guess i'm the one to blame

    • @MatthewWolverine
      @MatthewWolverine 6 років тому +1

      This is based on "The Once and Future King" by T.H. White. Specifically, the first part which is titled 'The Sword in the Stone'. Too bad they didn't make sequels covering the other 3 parts of "The Once and Future King". I've never watched any of the direct to video sequels(Little Mermaid II, Lion King 1 1/2, etc), but I'd watch those.

    • @MatthewWolverine
      @MatthewWolverine 6 років тому

      +Scarlet Sorcerer Technically, it is or at least might be in the stone. If you look below the anvil, there is a stone. The sword may have been embedded through both if it's long enough. And even if it's not, it's not Disney to blame. T.H. White's story is called The Sword in the Stone and it's the same way there. (The Once and Future King is broken into 4 parts/chapters/books which each have their own title.)

    Wait... I thought the pencil lines were for scratchy art style to look messy but articulated. I liked that art! If that’s their sloppy work, then their good work is FANTASTIC to me!

  • @bobbaker2061
    @bobbaker2061 5 років тому

    You are right on the money on this one. Merlin's living backward in time is from the original book. Merlin didn't just put the sword into the stone but arranged Arthur's parents getting together so he knew who the heir to the throne was. Camelot is the second part of the story with together with the sword in the stone make up the book "The Once and Future King". There is no line between divinity and magic in this case anyway because Merlin was also a prophet and an oracle and was himself an instrument of the divine.

    I love when you go out of the box full on with your theories. Merlin can do so many things that this theory is plausible. Also I agreed that begining that got cut out made a lot of sense. Guess Disney wanted a lighter/different touch for this movie.

    I can explain the pencil sketch lines. Xerox. Partway through development, Disney studios discovered that instead of hand tracing the animators' pencil lines on to cells, they could photocopy the pencil drawings directly to cells, and then send them on to be painted. Save time, and money. About this time they also would reuse animation references. Most obvious example of this is the dance between Prince Phillip and Princess Aurora in Sleeping Beauty is copied in countless Disney movies.
    Both Screen Rant and Channel Frederator have done multiple videos on this.
    With the Sword in the Stone, the main thing that got on my nerves, was Wart's voice kept changing! Very distracting.
    On the whole, I think your theory sounds sold. Keep up the good work.

    Oh, so effectively Madame Mim in the original version was MY version of the Enchantress, eh?
    I gotta say, there's some unspoken charm about Sword in the Stone and it was one of my childhood favorites. My guess about Merlin "cheating" by using Magic to turn Arthur into a fish, squirrel and bird, was generally supposed to get him interested in learning, so that he'd be more open to education.
    My problem with the movie is...in its current form...Merlin serves no purpose to the story and ultimately comes off as superfluous, if not an antagonistic hindrance in Arthur's life. Think about it; with or without Merlin, Pelinore arrives at the Castle to announce the New Years Tournament, Kay begins his Knight-Hood training, Wart becomes his squire, and they go off to London where Arthur pulls the Sword from the Stone and becomes King, all without Merlin's help.
    If anything Merlin almost PREVENTS Arthur from achieving his destiny as, not only do his actions almost get him killed, but they directly jeopardize his chances of getting to London after he gets him in trouble with the Kitchen-Duty. Then by some luck, Arthur is reinstated as Kay's squire, and Merlin literally removes himself from the movie.
    He only comes back after its all said and done.

    The first part of this video (minus the alternate opening) seems pretty obvious to me, Merlin was always aware that he would be teaching the Wart and it makes sense to me that he would know that Arthur would become king. I think the only reason we see the animal scenes is because these scenes are the ones that children would find the most interesting, there's probably a lot more going on than we're aware of (after all, we see that many days if not weeks pass between the Madam Mim scene and the Christmas scene in the castle). Nice to think about him putting the sword in the stone/anvil just before he went to Bermuda, that makes a lot of sense, and also explains why he mysteriously disappears for so long.

    🙋 with all the movies that Disney are bringing to life & making them into live action movies. I hope they actually do this one right here as well. Well Disney has been doing a fantastic job at what they do most and that is bringing all the cartoons to life as a live-action movie. Look what this is needed to Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, both of the Alice movies, I also think they did 101 Dalmatians as well to life not too sure on that one but I said I think. Also November 2nd I think you comes out Disney is doing The Nutcracker and the four Realms to life as well. Also supposably Disney is going to be doing Lady and the Tramp, The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Aladdin, and there's so much more that Disney is going to be doing as well bring another cartoon movies to life live action cannot wait.

    Could you *please* address in one of your Coraline videos of why the Beldam (in the "You may come out when you've learned to be a good daughter" scene) put Coraline in that room behind the mirror. Was this a setup to trap Coraline (in some twisted way)? Was the Beldam aware that the missing kids' soul were still there? Did they have to remain in that exact spot? Is letting the Beldam sew eyes on you the equivalent to selling your soul? If so, does this mean that if the ghost children's souls were in the Bedlam's possession, were they part of her trap for Coraline? Thank you!!!!

    In the older versions of the Arthurian stories, Merlin in his younger years was a massive womanizer. He enjoyed a good lady and that ended up being his downfall later on as well. The nymph Nimue used this flaw and trapped him in amber out of vengeance for being spurned by him in the past. Think this happened sometime after Arthur died by Mordred or whatever 'badguy' was in charge during that final battle, but I dunno much about the Arthurian tales beyond certain characters such as Merlin and Morgan Le Fay.

    • @UnseelieFaelass
      @UnseelieFaelass 5 років тому

      I just realized that Nim could be Nimue, or at least a version of her. Nim is just a short version of the name Nimue after all. Also, if her name is actually spelled Nym instead of Nim, then Nym could be a short version of the word Nymph. She does live in the woods after all, and has an affinity for magic as well. Nymphs also didn't always like men either. Hmmmm....

    • @UnseelieFaelass
      @UnseelieFaelass 5 років тому

      Also, I came up with a scenario that could better this movie with one extra main character. What if when Uther died, Morgan Le Fay couldn't take the throne because she was a bastard child? Let me explain. In a few versions Morgan is Arthur's half sister through their Mother Lady Igraine. Lady Igraine had Morgen with another man who died and Uther had been wanting Igraine for some time. Thus he married her once her husband died, taking Morgan as his own daughter. Course she could never be his heir, because she was again a bastard child. It would bring shame to her family if she was the only 'heir' they had and her ascension to the throne would be seen as desperate or insincere. So when Arthur was born, that crisis got averted. That is until Uther died, and possibly Igraine as well later on. Be it grief or maybe she died before Uther during childbirth. Who knows? Anyway....Morgan could sadly not take the throne, not even as a proxy queen until Arthur was ready. Arthur mysteriously vanishes from the family shortly after, possibly Morgan's doing for his own safety in case the kingdom lost it, perhaps how Sir Hector got Arthur in the first place. However, he may have treated Arthur badly because of Morgan being a bastard child and essentially because she landed him with the baby with little to no explanation of her plans. She'd then likely go into hiding to plan Arthur's eventual succession. She probably went to Nim first, only to be rejected and likely to end up in a duel with Nim. However Morgan defeats Nim(possibly causing the reason for her less than beautiful appearance for a nymph. Don't get mad, Nymphs were creatures known for extravagant looks) and thus Nim hates her even more and leaves the scene vowing revenge on her someday. Morgan then goes to Merlin who despite his eccentricities, is a powerful wizard. Merlin would likely agree to help her readily and with Merlin's help she creates an enchanted blade that only one person can pull out of the 'stone'. Likely Morgen could've enchanted the blade to only be pulled by someone of her blood and the inscription would've thrown everyone off to keep them from finding out who was actually the one behind the blade's appearance. Morgan may not have accounted for the plan to fail though as people forgot the sword as they failed to pull it. In a lawless land she wasn't safe so she left in hopes of finding a new plan while Arthur learned from Merlin what he needed in order to push him into finding the blade and become the King he was meant to be. Morgan might have had her own adventure in the background or Merlin could've asked her to go into hiding for her safety while he thought of something new. Eventually his new plan works and Arthur pulls the blade out to become King. Since Merlin in this version has no court experience, Morgan would be the teacher for courtly activities as if anyone would know it'd be her and Merlin would teach Arthur the rest in the meantime. In terms of how to use the sword, wage wars, etc. A knight in the court would likely be the one to teach Arthur that. Possibly Sir Hector would be the best choice for a military teacher. He certainly didn't give up on his own son Kay, despite the guy being a major dunce.
      Anyway, that's just my idea for how Sword in the Stone could've been better if Morgan Le Fay was in it and if instead of being a dangerous villain, she was Arthur's half sister trying to help him ascend the throne.

    I always thought it was Merlin, I thought it was obvious... but good theory nonetheless

    The books like this alternet version and the book is better

    • @TheFangirlWatches
      @TheFangirlWatches  6 років тому

      The books are always better, the problem is that I do a LOT of theories, and so reading a book to cross reference each video isn't time effective. Also, the movies end up being alternate universes because they ALWAYS get changed to save time or appeal to more people.

    I made it to the end I think this is an amazing theory I think you would have fun playing a game until dawn (unless you’ve already played ) but I think your reactions to that intense storytelling and also warning it is not something to play with the kids at the very beginning like first two chapters but yeah I think it’s a good game but I’m a sucker for storytelling

    I've always hated this film because it messed up on king Arthur legends. I also hated this film because of my brother who called me wart constantly. And the film made me hate squirrels.
