I went to Shenzhen in 1984. I cannot grasp the dramatic change in 40 years. It's truly amazing! In '84 it was open sewer housing with concrete everything but everyone had a TV.

The subway fare is quite affordable since it's designed primarily for convenient city commuting, so typically ranging from 0.5 to 4 USD. As for food, prices can vary, but on average, a meal at a decent restaurant falls within the range of 5 to 15 USD.

30-40 years ago, HK was the most futuristic city in the geophysical context of China. After 1997, it remained so until Sz started bulldozing the fishing & agricultural identity to become the mega metropolis m with slick steel, glass, that it is today. That’s wonderful.
HK has its beautiful harbor view and some ramnants of Victorian architecture, which added to its identity. 35 yrs from now, SZ’s super city will have gone dated. What will distinguish itself from other “modern” cities?

I lived there for two years. An honest opinion: Shenzhen's cool but the nightlife and culture is a bit dead. You've got coco park, but thats really it. Alot of the people who live in the city come from all over China, so it lacks a bit of its own identity like Shanghai and Hong kong. As a result, many foreigners left during Covid (im not sure if many came back). Foods awesome though and you have so many choices, travelling around is also affordable. I was able to order a different meal from a different restaurant and have it delivered for very cheap and very quick (beware though, some of the food isn't the highest quality, others is great quality). Around 10 bucks can get you a decent meal. It is modern in some parts (mostly Futian) and other parts isn't as much and its still developing. I'd recommend Shenzhen if you're interest in technology and manufacturing, there's a big mall with electronics where you can find interesting things. Overall i'd rate it a 6/10 city to live as a foreigner. Unique indeed! But definetly needs something else to make it more special.

Ask the locals during your trip about the current situation in the city: the plummeting real estate prices, the unsold apartments, factory closures, weak consumption, layoffs and the number of companies that have left the city, including Foxconn. Shenzhen, once a center of technology and innovation, is no longer so due to the West-East trade war, the Covid-19 pandemic, external political conflicts, and international sanctions on products manufactured in China, all of which are pushing investors to leave China. Shenzhen manufacturing is finished. I can also inform you about the situation in Shanghai and Beijing, which are also in a similar situation. It's like a pressure cooker ready to explode.
