I've been using Velvet Underglaze bisqued at 06 followed by overglaze LG-10 Clear fired to cone 5 with excellent results. My ceramics instructor says I shouldn't use LG-10 at cone 5 because it's made to fire at cone 10. All my test tiles look great, even using dots of underglaze, and my work looks beautiful. Should I switch to HF-9 zinc-free clear overglaze?
When do you recommend applying the velvel underglazes? On greenware, bone dry clay or bisque? I made a couple tests and it looks like the timing of application changes both the result quality and the color
What can you say about HF 12 vs SM 10? They are satin clear, both zinc-free, but they must be differentiated in something.. Looking at your test tiles, it looks like SM 10 is more opaque and covers more than HF12. I am interested in your insight. Thank you
Hello! I have used LG 10 and HF 9 over bisqued velvet underglaze and they all turn out either bubbly or smudged. I fire the pieces in a studio kiln that glaze fires up to cone 6 and I can't change any firing aspects due to this. Is this due to the glaze being overfired or perhaps applying thinner layers could solve this issue? My test tiles always come out great but never on the real things 😅 I'm crying
Can i still use hf9 for underglaze and hf10 for non underglaze pieces if im using cone 6 clay and firing pieces to cone 6? Or do you hav to fire to cone 5? Sorry brand new to pottery here
Could you PLEASE help me? I want to find a clear stain glaze for over my Amaco velvet underglazes. I fire to cone 6. On a large piece I dabbed on HF-12 over 3 coats (I swear!) of underglaze. My underglazes were smooth and opaque. But all of the colors got splotchy, even the black outlines. I have good pictures to send you but I can't attach. How can I send you my photos? PLEASE!
SM-11 Clear Satin is a better choice than HF-12Clear Satin (HF-112 is very reactive and can change underglazes, but SM-11 is very stable and works well with most underglazes). ~Cara
Great video. How do these work on a dark clay body? Should I use white underglaze under the colors? If so, do you recommend 3 coats white and 3 coats of the color? (I have tried using my slip, underglaze and my own 20x5 clear and unfortunately I had crazing caused by the slip.)
It depends on the dark clay body you're using as to how the colors will come out and whether you should use a white slip underneath. White slips will be more opaque than a white underglaze, so you may need to test a few. Most underglaze colors are fairly opaque on their own, but some will be altered by the oxides in dark clays. ~Cara
I started using the HF9 over VUG, and find it works great with the exception of Bright Red, which appears to have tiny bubbles. Would LG 10 work over bright red?
You *can* but the clear glaze will change the behavior of the initial glaze, even if they are both fired to the right cone temperature. Test to find out what the result will be ~Cara
To the best of my knowledge Duncan CC underglazes work similarly to Amaco LUG and Velvets, but you may need to test to see if there are any color changes. We don't test other company underglazes.
I’ve had some trouble with cloudiness when I use satin matte clear at cone 5. I use three coats. Am I putting it on too thick? I don’t have as much cloudiness at cone 6. I’m thinking of going to HF-9. Is that a matte or gloss?
@@AMACOBrent Thank you. Is it safe to use different glazes on different pieces of pottery in the same firing? For instance, could I use HF-9 on some pieces and HF-10 on my pinks in the same firing? Or do I need to fire these separate?
This is the EXACT information I've been searching for! Needed a clear SATIN glaze without zinc!!!
Thank you so much from a beginner 🙏🏼😇 … How to make them all food safe?? Your guidance will be really helpful 😇

Very informative - now I can make better glaze decisions
Very clear explanation.. Well done and thanks.
Thank you. Know what I'm buying on Monday.
Is it a damp sponge or a dry sponge?
For red, orange or yellow underglazes, will the colors be brighter with HF-10 zink bearing clear?
They will be just as bright, but without the bubbling. ~Cara

@@AMACOBrent Thank you so much. I have SM-10 on hand currently, not SM-11. What's the difference?
Sorry, I missoke, SM-10 is Clear Satin, SM-11 is White (and semi-opaque). @@susanfichner4188

That could be a problem. Was planning to buy Amaco Radiant Red. Any different. Anyone know?
Can I use Satin Matte over Chocolate Brown underglaze? I don't want a cloudy look, but prefer non-glossy.
Unfortunately, Satin Matte Clear over Chocolate Brown Velvet underglaze will get slightly cloudy.
What about C11 Mixing Clear? In what cases would you recommend it?
Which is better for singlefire ceramics? Earthenware. Have problems with crazing!
What clear glazes make a brown body grey and which keep the brown body brown?
Thank you from a beginner for the good tips info.
Glad it was helpful!
Can you clear glaze over a low fire glaze as long as they are the same cone firing glazes
You *can* but the clear glaze will change the behavior of the initial glaze, even if they are both fired to the right cone temperature. Test to find out what the result will be ~Cara
What are other underglaze colors that do well with zinc?
Do I need to fire my piece between underglaze and clear glaze?
I do because the underglaze contains gums that can mess with the glaze (causing bubbles). So I bisque to get rid of the gum.
@@____Ann____ Really? Isn't it bisque > underglaze let it dry then transparent glaze > glaze fire?
The studio that I go to fire at cone 10. I use the velvet underglaze, so should I use the hf9 clear glaze then?
The HF-9 Zinc Free Clear glaze will go up to cone 10 or you can use your studio clear if it is zinc-free. ~Cara
Will this change the color of the CC underglaze Duncan line?
To the best of my knowledge Duncan CC underglazes work similarly to Amaco LUG and Velvets, but you may need to test to see if there are any color changes. We don't test other company underglazes.

Hi there, sorry to hear you're having issues with Satin Matte being clear being cloudy. Your coats may be too thick. HF-9 is a glossy glaze.

@@HeartBoxStudio Yes you can do that! You can always use wax resist over areas that are already glazed while you apply your second glaze.
What is the difference between HF-8 and HF-9?
We don't have an HF-8. HF-9 is Zinc-Free Clear for cone 5-10. HF-10 Clear contains zinc. ~Cara
Will either clear glaze or zinc free clear be fine to use over white porcelain slip?
Yes it will be :)
