I think Klaus never would have allowed for his siblings to turn their humanity off, even if they wanted to, as that would be an act of weakness and his family can't be weak. He forced Stefan to turn it off to make him more subservient. I also think Katherine never turned her humanity off, because she said so, but I do think that she lost a lot of her humanity after 500+ years of lying, manipulating, killing and betraying - hence her only really caring for herself and very few others.

That’s interesting! We see in the 1400s flashbacks that Klaus sees love as a weakness so he might be more in favor of a partial shut off. He probably does want them to keep things like anger, pride etc!

It´s interesting because in the Originals they barely touch this subject which would be interesting to discuss. 1000 years living the way they do: always on edge, hating and loving so much you would think that they would turn it off. So they either never did or they can´t.

@@valeria-cy4zpthey already said in tvd the older you are the harder it is to turn you humanity off, rose said it to Damon, so if she was feeling like that at 500yo I don’t think the original could turn in off at this point

I don't think he would care considering he daggers them off & on anyway which also raise a question/theory if they were to turn it Off. If he daggers them while it's off then keep them dagger for a long period of time how would that Effect Them !

Rose explained that the older you get the more dull the switch is. You can maybe filter emotions, but you can't turn it completely off.

Rose said in season 2 that once a vampire gets to a certain age they can't turn it off. Which always kind of made sense to me, because as they get older their humanity and vampurity get kind of merged, instead of being two polarizing sides. People say, what would Katherine have been like if she had turned it off, but to be honest in my mind it was always off. When has she every done anything that shows a shred of humanity? If she 'turned it off' (which isn't possible because she's 500+ years old), would she actually act any differently? Not really

I think as you get older you get desensitized to things and the humanity switch for older vampires don’t exist like it does for younger vampires.

Everytime we see a vampire does some harsh or evil things doesn't necessarily means their emotions are turned off. We gotta remember all of their emotions are highent not only love care compassion but their hate anger & rage are highent as well. So them killing torturing humans or other vamps etc could also be them going off their highent anger or rage !
When Stafen approach his father his attentions was to have a conversation with him cause his father called him and monster he wanted to prove they wasn't but his emotions was so high and so was his hunger he lost control & he bit his father he pulled back tried to control himself but he couldn't & continue to feed it wasn't cause his humanity was shut Off. IT was due to his lack of control !

I always wondered about the Originals and the humanity switch because i thought klaus would have just turned it off when he had the hunter's curse but he didn't.Also I feel like because of how long the originals have been around, they sort of just black out memories rather than turning off the humanity switch, like with Elijah and Tatiah or Haley. Love the podcast btw ❤🔥

They wouldn’t have been able to turn it off. The older you get the harder it is to turn off your humanity.

Love that you guys did a video on the humanity switch! I got some stuff to say that I gotta say somewhere TVD fans would understand so hope you enjoy my rant lol!
Honestly, I really wish they left the idea of having humanity more ambiguous. In the beginning of the show, Stefan describes Damon as though“there’s nothing human left in him anymore” and it was left to speculation whether a vampire is “good” or “bad”based on their actions, if they gave into the bloodlust, etc. It brought into question what makes a person human and it showed just how much of a “curse” being a vampire really was for people like Stefan, who were compassionate and respected life.
Once they introduced the idea that there’s a literal lightbulb on and off switch, I think the lore of “what a vampire is” suffered. A humanity switch feels like a copout for the writers to make the characters act however necessary just to fuel drama. Cause they can just say “oh, they’re not a bad person, their humanity switch is just off!” But you see plenty of vampires with their “humanity on” doing inhumane things, which already showed that vampires are certainly not human and don’t have much humanity in them if they chose not to tap into that side of themselves. As vampires they have dark urges, but ultimately they have humanity regardless, which makes makes vampirism more tragic when you do fall into those dark urges. Making a literal on and off switch made vampires less complex, so I was never a fan of it.
Just to end my little essay (lol), I think it would have made sense if vampires start to lose their humanity the further they get from being human. For instance, a young vampire would have heightened emotions and feel more human than a vampire who’s thousands of years old and has become numb to what it means to be human. It would explain why Klaus is as ruthless as he is or why Rebecca and Kol had this elitist ideology of “we’re better than humans are” and it would explain why Damon and Stefan always come back home after a few years just to reconnect with that human side of themselves! It’d also explain why they cling on to their love of Elena, like love helps them feel human again. The humanity switch is kinda silly, especially when they close their eyes and “focus” to “turn it off” (looking at your Stefan)!
I love these specials, keep doing what you’re doing girls! ♥️

Caroline switching her humanity off was one of the most tragic slash hilarious slash fun things they ever did. I understand why she did it, I don´t know if she would have turned it on after one year though. I am surprised she did not lash out on them after the whole real letter debacle. That is when I would really turn it off and kill them all xD Elena with no humanity I guess is the closest we will get to book Elena. The popular mean girlie that Caroline was in season 1. It was fun to explore a more selfish Elena and I kinda wish we had more of that.

3x9 Klaus freed Stefan from his compulsion but Stefan like Elena in 4x21 initially used hate to motivate his humanity on mode. He became obsessed with hating Klaus while Elena was obsessed with hating Katherine. Everything else took a back seat for their singular motivation to destroy their nemesis. Sometimes it's difficult to identify when humanity is off at times. Damon for much of S1 as an example. He fought so hard to not allow himself to feel. This was a recurring theme for him but I'm not sure his humanity was off but he definitely buried his feelings likely for most of his vamp life as a coping mechanism. He only allows himself to fully feel when someone shows him love. All he wants is to be loved which is the strongest emotion for a vampire to have. It's such an interesting aspect of the show. There are clear moments when everyone's humanity is completely off but we also see many grey areas throughout. I guess it corresponds to what truly motivates the character.

Can you do a video talking about how the Peyton’s bloodline survives after plays killed Katherine’s family because Nadia said she never had children but Elena is somehow related to her.

I think they way to overused this in tvd and what i love the originals for is that no one is turning their humanity off, but they are all a 1000+ vampires they jhst probably cant turn it off due to age. And well they are less dramatic. I think that this switch thing is only accessible to younger vampires

Only The Originals are 1000+ yrs old. However I do agree with you cause Marcil never turned it off and he's a young Vamp. I think Cami is the only vampire in The Originals that turn it off !

The only thing about the Humanity Switch to me, is that the lore states that its a turn off from all emotions. Meaning you can't feel emotions, but they try so hard to get that person to feel something again to force the switch back on. Its kind've confusing cause if the person can't care anymore, how can you get them to feel an emotion for something again if its completely shut off. Maybe I'm thinking about it too much. So it makes you wonder is it really a complete off switch.

Oh I've been waiting for this one I'm sat.
Also as a suggestion I think a video about witches and siphons and why siphons can do magic as vampires and whether regular witches can to is a good video topic. Also i saw a few post on Reddit that theorize that Siphons are a balancing of nature for covens who do tbe merge and I would like to know your thoughts on it.

idk if killing zach's pregnant girlfriend would snap his humanity back on, after all he did kill zach (who he believed to be the last living salvatore) with his humanity on, so I don't think he really care about the family's legacy

Did Klaus compel him to turn it off and keep it off or just turn it off? If he just compels him to turn it off, What I don’t understand is the way that compulsion can be worked around? Like in the originals where Davina’s crush was compelled to not climb down from the chandelier so Rebecca told him to jump. Why did Klaus have to free him from his compulsion if all he did was tell him to turn it off? Why was he struggling with his humanity until that compulsion was “removed” ?

Intresting that the older vampire is the harder is to turn the switch, i forgot her name but frome 1 season Rose or so, she was 600+ old vampire and she doubted the existence of this switch and vocalized opinion that you are not turning your switch you are just stop giving fuck. And the more complex the species is the harder is to turn it off. I mean vampire can switch it but hybrid having their natural side wolf probably wont make it a 100%. And here is intresting thing Hope she turned it off after turning to vampire as she kills Landon. But as a tribrid and having her witch and wolf side on it goes harder to switch and visible she was more under control then any of those who we saw i mean the closest one was Caroline she really was reasonable with it and said herself that she just needed pain to go but as usual everyone starts to try to turn it on. Typical story arc one is turning it off and the whole gang is spending the season turning it on. A bit to cheese for my taste they overused this plot trick.

Enzo was a butthole to Stefan, Stefan should have killed him earlier. Enzo was a waste of a character. People just like him for Bonnie but I bet if they would have been together more than a season the show would have tore that relationship up. Bonnie’s end story is what I wanted for her character, To Leave Mystic Falls.

1864 for Stefan’s worse ripper binge . Stefan is a unique situation , we have met four confirmed rippers in the TVD universe : Stefan , Lilly , MG and Jade. The creators did confirm that rippers are ppl not suited to deal with the urges or vampirism and are too sensitive which causes their jarring and abrasive actions . Rippers will sometimes turn humanity off after a really bad binge but the other 3/4 of the listed did not majority of the time . The rest are synthetic ripper binges which can be found on the fandom and was involving the Augustine experiments 🧪.
