Awesome explanation, I have had this happen and my doctor or the lab that took the tests didn’t explain to me the reasons, if there were issues with me or anything...All good now i know why and its given me peace of mind
Hi Varnon what a great and clear explanation even a lay man like me understood perfectly. I am 65 years old generally quite healthy. I did a regular health screening last week and today doctor told my platelets low and appear in clumps. Doctor told me for a citrated test and yet to be done. After watching your video i understood and got a great relief. Are you taking classes in a medical school . Beautiful explanation. Thanks again.
Dear Prijo, happy to hear that the video gave you some peace of mind! I lecture at University of Cape Town, but also on invitation elsewhere. Kind regards Vernon
Thanks, your video made me feel better. In the last 3 weeks I've had 3 blood test come back normal except for platelet clumping (estimated platelet count normal) and have a appointment with a Hematologist to investigate further. I do have liver disease do to years of drinking alcohol but with research I can't find where platelet clumping is caused by that.
Can this also happen when the blood was taken incorrectly? Like a slow drip from the butterfly and you get clumps? I really like your videos, they are very clear and well explained, thank you for uploading!
This is exactly what I have! Every time I go for a full blood count my platelets clump so I have to ask for a different method of collecting my blood to exclude EDTA. Now my burning question is I managed to dodge the AZ vaccine because it contains EDTA. Was I right to do so? Is this why some people were getting clots due to an immune response to the EDTA in the vaccine??
What if your platelets is slightly high and your PRimary care wants to test you for clumping? Wouldn’t that mean that I would have even higher platelet count? I’ve been having platelet count high for the last two years and it is now being recognized due to My new doctor.
Im 29 years old I never was told my platelets would clumped with on edta tube but this month i went in for physical and i got a called from my dr saying i have low platelet so she had me come in the next day to retake the test with a citrated tube so i did and my platelets came out normal. Can that happened all of a sudden with edta tubes i never had this issue before?
Dear JR, platelet clumping is not considered to be related to a disease. It is an artefact due to the interaction between EDTA in the tube and the platelets, so nothing to worry about, just be aware so that you are not treated for it, if someone does not recognise it.
Yes, they do stick to each other and to the endothelium when you have an injury, but the platelet clumping that I refer to here happens in the EDTA tube and is not pathological. The platelets sticking together due to vascular injury is not seen on a blood smear.
what I read in this paper mentions The agglutination is secondary to platelet autoantibodies present in a small percentage of normal subjects which react with an epitope on platelet glycoprotein IIb/IIIa exposed by EDTA. www.medical-labs.net/edta-induced-pseudothrombocytopenia-seen-on-blood-smear-3341/

What a great and generous professor you are! Thank you so much for the clear explanation of this complex system. I wish I was your student!
No problem. Glad I could help!

My daughter had 3 repeatedly blood test all within 6 weeks apart all came back platelet clumping very worried time
Thank you for such a simple explanation, I can't wait for the other topics you are planning to cover!
Why does platelet clumping occur? Please explain sir. I have the same problem

My baby have clumped platelets.

Thanks Selma, I appreciate the comment. I have just uploaded a video on "Understanding the Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate". Enjoy!

Only a pleasure!
Thank you, Prof!
Glad to hear that!

Yes, it certainly can. I am glad to hear that your doctor recognised it. Many people do not think about clumping.
Could this platelet clumping be related to a disease? I have anxiety because of what I have read online?

Thanks
I appreciate the positive comments. Feel free to let us know if there are topics which you would like us to address.
Hi Professor- could a medication such as Dupixent (monoclonal antibody) cause PLT clumping? All other CBC wnl. Thanks in advance!
Spoiler alert yes it does. After another citrated draw PLT wnl and no clumping.
But don't platlets have to clump together if you get injured?

Oh thanks
@@Legomed my mom's blood report in cbc platlet low but in pbf platlet clumps so how to know my mom right platlet count and how to treat clumps platlet
Nice and simple:-) Thank you Prof Louw
what is the exact exposing antigen you mentioned?
what I read in this paper mentions
