I think Devon Toews gets overshadowed by Makar. The dude is one of the most sound defenders in the league and has maybe the most lethal poke check I've ever seen. His denial of cross crease passes on the pk or on a 2-1 rush seems matched only by Makar. Toews will even knock saucer passes out of the air an unreal amount of the time. He has been consistently at or near the top in +/- over the past several seasons. Possibly the most underrated player in the league.

@@shreksswamp1182 to be fair you could probably say that about the other top dogs to, like Fox, Josi, Hughes, Bouchard, and Heiskanen. they all make mistakes, but that’s the point of having 2 defenders. You can have one maybe more dedicated to being offensive, while the other is there to be more defensive minded. Hughes has Hronek. Bouchard has Ekholm. They all have guys to cover so they can focus on being such a threat on offense

Adrian Kempe. Had a 41-goal season in 2022-23, led the defense-first Kings in scoring last year with 75 points and bumped Anze Kopitar off the top of the Kings' scoring stats for only the second time in his long career (and Kopitar is another guy who doesn't get much recognition; "I didn't know Kopitar was still playing," is something I see often from other fanbases).
Kempe has evolved an offensive game beyond what was assumed to be another "two-way" defensive clone LA's system obsessively mass produces or goes out of their way to obtain. But I didn't even see Kempe ranked on top 100 fantasy league hockey player lists last season. The unknown 40-goal scorer.

as an islanders fan aho in carolina is criminally underrated and measures up well against other star players who get far more attention and maybe even beats them in a lot of categories. he’s one of the most defensively sound star centers in the entire league without sacrificing any offensive upside and plays top penalty kill minutes on a team that has one of the best PKs in the league every year. he is one of those guys that thrives under the brindamour defense first system but you have to think if he was on another team that would allow him to focus more on the offensive side of the game, how many points he would have. probably in the 100-120 range. i think many GMs would absolutely kill for a guy like him and even tho i hate him for what he’s done to my team over the years, he’s one of the most noticeable players for a single team in the entire league the way he stands out in almost every game

I don't think you can consider Barkov underrated anymore. Anytime you watch any hockey game with the panthers the opposing announcers all talk about how good he is. He's someone that every NHL fan knows which is kind of uncommon for someone who is not a media personality, but I think that just shows how good people consider him to be.

    • @romaliop
      @romaliop 2 місяці тому +1

@@romaliop I would agree that defensive aspects of the game in general are underrated, but he also has won the Selke twice now which makes it hard to sell the argument that he's underrated because his defense isn't highlighted enough. I still think any fan of a team that watches their team play the panthers knows who Barkov is because their own announcers will talk about how good he is. I remember being bummed when he signed his extension because I wanted my team to try making a run at him, and he signed that 3 years ago.

@@BUZZNIGHTYEAR99 that’s just so far from the truth.. miller was abysmal up until the point of tochet coming in. He had no urgency, was lazy on backchecks, took horrible line changes, gave the puck away nearly 3-5 times every power play, and was known at the time as being a toxic teammate. It wasn’t until toch came in and obviously talked some sense into him about a lot of his lazy play. So few mention him cause he's a late bloomer, only got to the NHL at age 24, was never appreciated to his real value by the Leafs management and the Toronto fans kinda lost interest in the kid at the time but he stuck on, worked super hard and seized his chance in Florida (in Tampa for a year first), and now with the Panthers just have a look at the playoffs numbers on this guy the past 3 seasons, it's mind blowing.

Each fanbase can probably name at least one 'under rated star', so on behalf of the TB Bolts I nominate Brayden Point. On a team with Stamkos, Kucherov, Hedman, and Vasilevskiy it is easy lose the absolute unit Point is. In 2021, when Kucherov was out the entire season recovering from surgery, Point carried the Lighting into the playoffs to their second Cup in a row. Then, when Toronto took him out in 2022, his absence in the finals probably costs TB a third Cup in a row. Yes, I am bias, but can anyone deny the star skill level of Point?

He is likely to be on the same level as Barkov in a few years, but is completely overshadowed by his teammates and by virtue of playing in Florida. As a Wild fan, I agree with the Kaprizov vote. At times I’ve been disappointed, but by seasons end he’s always up there at ~90 points. Sometimes he looks to pass too often versus using his own shot and at others he tries too much by himself, so I think he’s still learning & growing. But he pairs very well with Boldy and Zuc, so he’s fun to watch with them. He’s a playmaker for Boldy and he’s a scorer for Zuc.

Dylan Larkin, captain of the Detroit Red Wings, is often considered one of the most underrated players in the NHL for several reasons:
    1. **Consistency in Production**: Despite playing on a team that has been in a rebuilding phase for several years, Larkin has consistently been a top performer. He regularly puts up solid point totals, often leading the team in scoring, yet he doesn’t always get the recognition he deserves because he’s not playing on a perennial contender.
    2. **Two-Way Play**: Larkin is not just an offensive threat; he’s also a strong two-way center. He’s responsible defensively, frequently matched against other teams’ top lines, and excels in both power play and penalty-killing situations. His defensive skills are often overshadowed by flashier offensive players.
    3. **Leadership**: Named the captain of the Red Wings at a young age, Larkin has shown tremendous leadership qualities. He’s been a steadying presence during challenging times for the franchise and has helped mentor younger players, contributing to the team's future success.
    4. **Speed and Skill**: Larkin is one of the fastest skaters in the NHL, and his speed is a critical asset. Combined with his skill set, he can break games open, yet his abilities are sometimes overlooked in discussions about the league’s most dynamic players.
    5. **Underappreciated Market**: Playing in Detroit, a team that has struggled in recent years, means that Larkin doesn’t always get the national attention that players in more prominent markets do. His talents and contributions might be more widely recognized if he played for a team that was consistently in the playoff spotlight.
Overall, Larkin’s combination of skill, leadership, and two-way play makes him one of the most valuable yet underappreciated players in the league.

Nugent Hopkins. I wouldn't say crazily underrated but like Mikko R you're gonna be overshadowed when you share the spotlight with McDrai

But overall, gotta say probably kyle connor, same reason morrissey is probably most underrated Dman. Winnipeg is even overlooked within canada. I think people here even know more about the sens players than they do the jets beyond helly and schieffle.

i always thought that Steven stamkos even though he's right up there with ovi and crosby as one of the top alpha dogs of his generation and the 2010s decade and still going strong today, was always somewhat under appreciated since he always had a similar consistency pace to ovechkin i mean hell he scored the second most goals in the 2010s decade (even after 2 significant injuries taking him out for 2 large periods) and had 2 rocket richards and was the runner up for it 3 other times. He was also a hart trophy finalist in 2012 and was a finalist for the lindsay in both 2011 and 2012 and was the runner up to the art ross in both 2012 and 2013. I always say that daniel sedin deserved the lindsay in 2011 and malkin deserved the hart in 2012 fair and square for many reasons but stamkos should've had the Ted Lindsay award in 2012 since he scored 60 goals on a mediocre team and was only the 20th player to hit that number that year and the only one in the 2010s decade to hit it. People say all the time especially the last 2 ish years that he was "carried" by certain guys which drives me crazy cause these players who "carried" him wouldn't be the players they are or were if it wasn't for him and his guidance and him getting 106 points in 2021-2022 with kucherov out for a large chunk of that season shows how inaccurate the "he was carried" statements are. I mean no disrespect to other bolts players but saying he was carried by them is prolly the stupidest thing i'd ever heard.

hockey media just likes to focus on players who are offensively talented. which, i mean, makes sense. that's a whole half of the game. but most players i feel are underrated, it's because they aren't as flashy or impressive on the opposite end of the ice. (stars fan so i only have stars suggestions) but miro heiskanen and roope hintz are incredibly under appreciated.

Dylan Larkin is flying below the radar a bit since the wings didn't make it into the playoffs since 8 years now - his rookie season
But he's carrying the team not only in countable measures as you look to what happens to the team while he is not around
