I prefer acrilycs over oil. They're just so easy to use and you can clean your brushes with just water and soap. I get a terrible headache from the smell of oil paints so for me, acrilycs are really the only option, but I'm happy with it 😊
I use water mixable oils - they can be thinned with water, they have only a slight smell of linseed oil and you don`t need any harsh medium to clean the brushes - can HIGHLY recommend them. Way better than acrylics when it comes to blending colours :-)
@@brennerfineart I got some water soluble oil paint last month- SLIGHT SMELL??? I was dying from the smell (not literally but oh god I couldn't stand it) how bad are normal oils?!
Check out Tanya Shatseva. Most all her painting are acrylic and she get very smooth blendings. So smooth that I first mistaked her paintings as oil paintings. So it is possible to get acrylic to blend very smoothly.
Yep she's my favourite but she doesn't blend. She adds multiple similar colors to make it look similar to a blend and she makes sure that the values are right at every stroke.
Thanks for this video. I keep going back and forth in my mind whether I want to start acrylic painting or oil painting. One technique I've seen with acrylic painting, besides using a retarder, is to use an airbrush with water and fine mist the canvas every so often to keep the paints wet for blending.
Ordered water mixable oils after using acrylics for 10 years, excited to try :) although for anyone who wants to get into acrylics you can def get a smooth look as well, layering and using mediums.
Malin, I use water soluble oils all the time! I hope it goes well for you too, and find me on Facebook if I can help you succeed with them! They're wonderful! Good luck and have fun!
They both look nice but I love the acrylic side. I love the more obvious colors in the skin. But if I want it more blended, I just use open acrylics. They stay wet for a few hours. So I can blend and emphasize the colors and not have to wait 2 days 😆 before it dries. Actually, when I use open acrylics I get a little impatient because of the drying time. Too slow for me. So its whatever you get used to. Also, just like your oil side, the acrylic side can also use more layers to get a smooth and less choppy finish. They're both beautiful though! Thanks so much! Loved the video!
I find both mediums have advantages over each other, ultimately i prefer oils but some of my best pieces I have done with acrylics. I fine acrylics ironically work better when using a more traditional old masters oil painting approach of underpainting and glazes as you can work layer over layer within one session and not having to worry about fat over lean or other such aspects and drying times of different pigments. As a result you can create very life like (photorealistic) paintings with acrylics in less time. Ironically I wish i could get my oil pallette to remain wet for as long as acrylics with a stay wet palette. i've tried every method out there yet paint soon dries after a few days or changes consistency. whereas with acrylics using my own home made stay wet palette i can keep the paint wet for months
I've used both mediums and I find they're suited to different things, though acrylics can be made to mimic oils if you use the right retardants and thinners. If done well, the difference is still visible, though perhaps not immediately apparent.
You can also use several mediums with oil paints to have drying times equal to acrylics using gel and retarder (overnight dry times are perfectly obtainable with either!
Finally the video I needed. Thanks so much, i have bien wanting to do that too, start with acrylics and finish with oil but I was worried it would mess It up. Thanks so much!
She paints well but what she should have done is send an exact copy of her sketch to someone who actually has her experience level and is similar to her color palette style but who actually has equal amounts of training in acrylic as she has in oil
That was a great video! Yeah, You are right, most of the painters take the best of both techniques which is the eclectic option: first layers with acrylics and detail layers with oils. The only thing about oils is that take quite long to dry before applying the final varnish. However, with the acrylic-and-oil-combined method oil layers will dry really faster. II had a look at Greg "Craola" Simkins technique, the issue here is that he's using other mediums which are an extra cost in your budget and really hard to get them in other countries. So, his techniques only applies in his country. Thanks for devoting such a great effort on this video and for sharing it with us! I would give you 1000 likes if I could! I big kiss for you Lioba! : -)
I'm currently working with acrylic paint only, but I'll try oil paint once I get the materials, although I'm really afraid of using it. I enjoy using acrylic paint because it dries really fast, so if I don't like something about the painting, I can just put another layer of paint and continue to work right away. Also, my style doesn't require much blending, and I like to experiment with texture. But oil paint is beautiful on it's own ways, from what I saw: The colors are just nice and different-looking, it covers the canvas easily, it's really smooth, and this material would be useful for me since I can put my painting down for a while in order to do my daily tasks. Still, I'm terrified of using oil paint, lol.
Loved seeing the comparison between mediums! Thank you for doing this excersize! I like the be big spots of paint on your acrylic one, but I definitely see what you mean about the softness in the oil portrait. Thank you Lioba 💌
Great video. I love the oil version and the acrylic version. The acrylic portrait still looks very nice as an art style. But if she didn't intend for the harsh parts, there is probably a different technique for it. There are other channels that paint realistic portraits with acrylics like Debojyoti Boruah Art and Renso Art.
Any artist who prefers one over the other is missing professional knowledge on how to work with it. Many artists don't know but both oil and acrylic can get exactly to the same result. Lack of same result concludes in lack of proper knowledge on how to work with each medium.
Can you talk about oil on acrylic paint ? I would be very interested in that because I'm an acrylic painter, BUT I really want to try oils but I'm too scared... So maybe I can do the first layers in acrylics and then finish with oils...
Justine Semidea I think I’ve seen techniques where artists use a base layer of acrylic and then go in with oils, you just can’t put acrylic over oil. Please don’t be afraid of oil paint, I was too for the longest time and now they’re my favorite medium and wish I had tried them sooner. Just keep the room ventilated and wash your hands after you’re done painting and you’ll be perfectly fine! :)
I have a couple of videos where I talk about this technique, like this one: ua-cam.com/video/OobLmuCvvtA/v-deo.html or this one: ua-cam.com/video/04XelswMNTM/v-deo.html
another master of acrylics worth checking out is Jason Edmiston. He also uses a traditional oil panting technique but with oils ie underpainting then build up in layers. if you follow his instagram he actually shows and talks alot about his process step by step/post by post a fair bit
whilst they both have advantages over each other predominantly for me oils always look better when finished as per their colours and durability they have a stronger finished look where as acrylic have a slightly dried out look in comparison
I went from oil to acrylic because of smell, worked in acrylic for about 20 years, tried water soluble oil about 15 years ago , and never looked back. Only advise I have is use medium not water for thinning your paint! Earth tone especially will get yucky chunks. And not spread well. Fast dry medium or stand oil designed for WSO work great.
I've made multiple acrylic paintings on watercolour paper and you can simply add just a little water to your mixes to bring them to the consistency of fluid acrylics and you won't have any issues. Also, don't try to blend just add transition colors instead.
I paint with acrylics but I've tried oils 2 in my opinion acrylics are less harmful and easier to use I don't know how to use oils but but first time when I tried to to paint with them I had problems with the smell and also no I didn't know how is cleaning
This video was very helpful! And I am actually able to make portraits and to blend and get pretty accurate skin tones only because of you!! You are such an inspiration for me❤😍 and all of you videos and artworks are very beautifully made💕❤❤
I hate acrylics, I always feel like they're working against me. Oils are my one and only love, with experience you can do simply anything with it. And contrary to popular opinion you don't necessarily need solvents either.
um... the one on right looks like she is wearing a mask. In this case I prefer the oil version. The lines around the eyes are too harsh on the acrylic version.
I don’t like acrylic paints, because they are mainly made of rubber and chemicals (this is harmful to the environment), they dry out too quickly, it’s difficult to correct mistakes, it is not known how they will behave after 100 years in the painting. I am very skeptical about acrylics. I think it is much better to buy gouache and then varnish it.
Yeah, this is user error. Unfortunately you're just not that good with acrylic paint. I've seen a lot of artists paint portraits in acrylic and their stuff looks like the picture on the left. I think you just need more lessons and practice using acrylic paint.

When it comes to cleaning up and overlaying, acrylic wins, but when it comes to a more realistic and flawless look, oil wins.

All you need to do is glaze additional transparent layers to smooth the acrylic.

Hi, if I'm not mistaken, yes you can. just add a layer or two of gesso so the paper won't absorb the acrylics so fast, and you can paint on it. :)
