No wonder this was such a great story, written by the stupendous R. L. Stevenson, one of the best writers. I love old Westerns, and especially ones with well written storylines, and this was one I had not seen, which made it all the more enjoyable. Anything with Edgar Buchanan in it is worth watching. Thanks!
One of the best writers, but was also a radical socialist. Something that is slipped in to the end promoted "the ends justify the means" fallacy by claiming the crime theft is somewhat justified if it helps others. But this was produced in a time when they still chose quality over the political message, which is definitely NOT the case today and why main stream "entertainment" is so loathed.
I have never heard of this Western before and I was pleasantly surprised how well written and acted that this one is. I was expecting an average B level Western but this was first class. Thanks for posting.
Another mind-catching western motion picture with engaging story. With Buchanan in it, its appeal is guaranteed. I am enjoying it. I lived for over a decade in the States where I fell in love with classic western movies. Family circumstances forced me back where I had come, but my movie preference survived my departure. I still watch them, and, even if for some moments, take me back virtually to the day. Keep uploading. A. A. Kirkuk
Edgar Buchanan is one of the best character actors ever! Forrest Tucker is a favorite too, which helps make this is an entertaining movie! I always liked William Bishop and didn’t understand why he made so few movies, so I looked him up & unfortunately he passed at the early age of 41 from cancer!
@@carolynrussell774- I agree!! And even though a lot of people of that era lacked education, they seemed to have an adequate vocabulary that didn't limit them to 4-letter words & profanity or other vulgarity. That's partly why I prefer these old Westerns over today's movies. Back then, they had actual dialogue, not just a repetitive string of expletives!!
Have not seen it but the director, Phil Karlson, is an excellent director, especially with noirs. This western, made in 1948, was a little before he hit his stride in 1952 with Scandal Sheet and then 99 River Street a year later
Forrest Tucker, another outstanding actor. I remember him from the mid 60's western comedy F TROOP in which he starred along side KEN BERRY and LARRY STORCH.
This movie had everything - mystery, excitement, great storytelling - and puts the typical western to shame. The great English writer Robert Louis Stevenson wrote this story (in the opening credits) and made himself one of the characters! 'Treasure Island', 'The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde' and 'Kidnapped' among his many other classics! He died at age 44.
William Bishop played the suave, smooth talking bad guy in a lot of movies. Nice to see him play the good guy. Forest Tucker (stage driver) before he became a big star. Gloria Henry died in 2021 age 98. She was in a bunch of quality films in the 1940s-50s but is best remembered as the mother in TV's classic comic strip sitcom 'Dennis the Menace' (1959-1963).
Wow. Forrest Tucker from F-TROOP fame. LOL. And Edgar Buchanan from PETTICOAT JUNCTION!...LOL.."There's Uncle Joe and he's moving kinda' slow at the Junction!...Petticoat Junction." ...LOL.
It's a well made western, but that scene where Edgar Buchannan gets knocked out by the hero is the dumbest and most implausible plot twist I have ever seen.
This is an absolute beauty with a great story penned by R L Stevenson.
Awesome ! Edgar Buchanan playing it straight and nailing it ! A western I have never seen , is always a joy .😊
It amazes me how a stagecoach driver would have $500 in his pocket

About $20,000 in today's money. Boy those folks sure were loaded in those days!

There's nothing like watching the western movies fro the late 40' s to the mid 60's, especially if they are not SPAGHETTI WESTERNS.
Wanta BEAUTIFUL Western Movie!
Good movie I had not seen....

Like the way he snuck up in the sheriffs posse and no one turned around 🤣 🤣
You can always tell a good cowboy movie if they have a six horse coach that’s a real coach, and a very young for Forrest Tucker

This story is timeless. Like a redeemer, some wrong is done to get right. That's right as in wholesome and responsible. Not the political meaning.
