You have a nice vibe to your singing Andrea… keep listening to this giant of music and let Carole King teach/inspire you on your journey. She, Joni Mitchell and Carly Simon provide a deep well to draw from so keep listening and learning 🤗
This is good advice., This was one of the most influential albums of the singer songwriter era - countless artists have been influenced by that album. Carol King was at the center of a group of amazing singer song writers including James Taylor, Gerry Goffin, Carly Simon and many more.
“Tapestry” just dominated the pop charts when it was released. It won the Grammy for Album of the Year, and also received Grammys for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, Record of the Year ("It's Too Late"), and Song of the Year ("You've Got a Friend"), making Carole King the first solo female artist to win the Grammy Award for Record of the Year and the first woman to win the Grammy Award for Song of the Year.
She's one of the most prolific song writers. She wrote dozens of hit songs for other people. In 1972 she produced her own album called Tapestry in which she wrote and sang all the songs. It won 5 Grammy awards.
Tapestry album is a timeless masterpiece. Carol King is one of the most prolific and greatest songwriter/ composer ever. Knowledge of her contribution to music history is mandatory. Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!!!
Sure, King is brilliant. But never lose sight of why Andrea Silvestro should *truly* be awed. Andrea grew up with MANY female role models (Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift, etc), but when King started her songwriting career in the late 1950s, she had virtually nobody to look up to, and no road map to follow.... so she carved it out herself. A true pioneer.
And started out as half of the writing duo, Goffin/King, in the pre-Beatles Brill Building song factory. John Lennon later said that he wanted Lennon/McCartney to be the next Goffin/King. As I recall, she cancelled her fist solo engagement due to stage fright; she had been a songwriter, not singer: "One Fine Day" is one of my favorites, especially since King is on piano.
I went through my teen years during the 70's. What I loved about that time was the variety of styles of music that were popular. One month you'd buy a Carole King or Carly Simon album the next a Black Sabath or Led Zepppelin the next a Rod Stewart or David Bowie album. Going to the record store to check out new albums was the highlight of my week during my school years.
Carole had been writing hits for other singer since the late 50's. So, when it came time for her make her own record, well, she had a ton of songs to choose from. Several songs on "Tapestry" were covered and make hits by others. Such as "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" with Aretha Franklin and "You've Got A Friend" by James Taylor. In fact, (hint, hint) these would be good next reactions. Or, even better, react to her version of the song and the cover. Compare and contrast. Other standouts: "I Feel the Earth Move" and "Smackwater Jack" . Or, any other song on the album. By the way, the album spent almost 6 YEARs in the Billboard 200 chart. Not bad.
'Tapestry' an all-time great album. And Carole King, an all-time great song writer-composer. A song I really like is 'Jazzman' - the sax intro really knocks me out!! Luv your reaction. 🤙💙
Carole King is a dolomite Pop Music legend. Her career spans the 50s, 60s, 70s and onwards. Everything you heard was live and in the studio. Back when old school was just school and Carole King was already a Dean. They Do Run Run
A real singer, who's the songwriter, real musicians... who can Play... and as others have said, a classic album. We kinda knew it even back then. Yes, a genuine American musical treasure!!
I saw Carole in London a few years ago when she performed the whole Tapestry album. She still has it and it's one of the best albums of all time. Every track's a zinger.
I think a good word to describe her singing especially in this song is 'intimate'. It really stands out when the instrumentals get quiet, and then she re-enters almost in a whisper -- then she and the band gradually bring back the intensity -- just beautifully arranged and performed . . . .
She was also a very successful songwriter, going back to the Brill Building era. She and Gerry Goffin wrote a raft of uber-classic songs, in a small office with a piano.
Carole King is the real deal. A young female singer-songwriter can be inspired and she can be an influence. I want you to listen more. And by the way, your voice is so lovely when you were harmonizing with her. There is a weightless agility in your voice, and a delicacy - not to mention your pitch accuracy.
Try more of Carole King and Carly Simon who was a contemporary. They were incredibly important to the eras. That’s the Way I Always Heard It Should Be is wonderful. These ladies wrote and performed many of their songs. Incredibly influential.
She once said in an interview how she didn't understand why modern singers want to sing 4 notes on each syllable instead of actually working the note and melody.
Hello Andrea...(that's my wife's name too). I am an older guy and the singer songwriter genre made an impact on me as I was growing up and came of age in the 60's and 70's. Your interest has given me the incentive to pass along some suggestions that I have been fortunate enough to hear during this time, and as my ear for the genre developed. This is a small sample but it will give you a variety of the breadth of great music from this genre. I'll list the artist and their song(s) I recommend. I hope they bring you as much enjoyment as I have had listening to them. Here we go....Danny O'Keefe - Good Time Charlie's Got The Blues, Jonathan Edwards - Sunshine (Go Away Today), Eric Clapton - Wonderful Tonight, Charlie Rich - Behind Closed Doors, Glenn Campbell - Wichita Lineman, Fleetwood Mac - Landslide, Dan Fogelberg - Leader Of The Band and Longer, Billy Joel - You're My Home, Dave Mason - We Just Disagree, The Eagles - Peaceful Easy Feeling and Take It Easy, Marshall Tucker Band - Heard It In A Love Song, America - Tin Man and Ventura Highway, James Taylor - Fire And Rain, Long Ago And Far Away, Sunny Skies and Riding On A Railroad, Neil Young - Old Man, Kenny Rankin - Time And Love and Groovin', Helen Reddy - Peaceful, Stampeders - Sweet City Woman, Bob Dylan - Knockin' On Heaven's Door, The Allman Brothers Band - Midnight Rider, Carole King - Only Love Is Real and Been To Canaan, Crosby Stills & Nash - Carry On and Suite Judy Blue Eyes, Seals & Crofts - Summer Breeze and We May Never Pass This Way Again, Van Morrison - Brown Eyed Girl and Autumn Song, Bread - Make It With You and If, Judy Collins - Both Sides Now, Joni Mitchell - Help Me, Jackson Browne - Doctor My Eyes, Pure Prairie League - Amie, Bonnie Summerville - Winding Road, Anne McCue - Stupid, Indigo Girls - Closer To Fine, Strange Fire, Power Of Two, Christopher Cross - Sailing, Loggins & Messina - House At Pooh Corner, Renee Stahl - It's All Right Here, Miranda Lambert - The House That Built Me, Mazzy Star - Fade Into You, Elton John - Mona Lisas And Mad Hatters, Levon, Your Song, Tiny Dancer.
So glad you have discovered Carole King. This abum, Tapestry, is arguably one of the best singer-songwriter albums of all time (see details below). . Be ssure to liten the the whole thing - you will be glad you did! Carole King's Tapestry is considered one of the best-selling albums of all time. It has sold over 25 million copies worldwide and is certified 14× Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Here are some other notable rankings for Tapestry: In 2000, Colin Larkin ranked it 74th in his All Time Top 1000 Albums In 2020, Rolling Stone ranked it 25th on its list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" Tapestry won four Grammy Awards in 1972, including Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Record of the Year In 1998, the album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame
I was 14 in 1971 when the "Tapestry" Lp was released. I bought it and played the living hell out of it. In 1972 "Tapestry" won the Grammy for Album Of The Year and "It's Too Late" for Record Of The Year. You should dive into this album, it's a phenomenal album. A few other female artist's from this time period you should dive into are Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins, Carly Simon and Linda Ronstadt. By this time period I mean 70's. I don't want to leave out Karen Carpenter of The Carpenters. Now there's a brother, sister act you need to check out. I feel very fortunate that I got to experience truly iconic music from the 60's and 70's. The 60's gave us The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, The Who and the list goes on and on. Yeah the sixties gave us both The Beatles and Bob Dylan. What? How did that happen? The word "Iconic" is thrown around way too loosely today. Everyone's Iconic today. I'm very stingy with that word. The Beatles officially split up in 1970 but there last Lp recorded was "Abbey Road" released in September, 1969. The music they released between 1963 and 1969 revolutionized music and is still relevant today. Do you realize how many by young artists today have sampled Beatles music in their songs? It's a very, very long list. The Beatles, split up 54 years ago and at this time they have sold around 900 million LP's worldwide. No one is even close to that and never will be. They're still a top selling act every year to this day. Also, 1.5 Billion singles sold in the US alone, yes that Billion and another 1 Billion sold worldwide. They're actually up for the Grammy for Record Of The Year this year
So glad you've come across Carole - you will learn so much from her and it will help your own development. She wrote dozens and dozens of hits for other people but was nervous about appeariing herself until her friendship with James Taylor allowed her to overcome it and they often played together at venues like the Troubadore. Her voice is very natural and conveys emotion in a way that made everyone of my generation feel that she was singing to them personally. Tapestry was one of the very few albums that Everyone had in their collection - whether they were heavy rockers, folkies, prog, or country. When you listen to it every song is your favourite until the next one starts. And as you've already noticed the production is superb - it seems very simple at first but there's so much going on in little sections and layers, and Carole's ability to put in little licks and phrases on the piano that are just sooo perfect. Study it and enjoy it, and watch out for other versions by a wide variety of artists that are often very different - Aretha Franklin and James Taylor particularly.
Hi Andrea, my first on your channel, and its almost as if Carole is a sister of yours, so sweet. I do love her music as well, and the whole album 'Tapestry' is worthwhile listening... you could just follow through the line-up of songs. I completely agree: it feels so beautifully natural, and is not built on fancy effects. Also the cover art is as simple as epic: just her in jeans at the window, with her cat. Also to say: your way of listening, with coming in, pointing out things, and singing along - is flawless. Its fun following you through the song! 💖
You need to react to Carole King being honored at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC Aretha Franklin sang her #1 hit Natural Woman which Carole King wrote for her, one of Aretha Franklin's last public appearances before she died
The sessions for Tapestry were at A&M Studios, and it was fortunate to have Joni Mitchell recording her Blue album down the hall. Joni visited Carole's room and you can hear her uncredited vocals in the background in a few songs, including this one.
Hi Andrea, yep, the great Carole King, super songwriter and singer who paved a major way for all the female vocalists who would follow her. Legend. Icon. Timeless artist.
Carole King is highly gifted. In fact, when she was just a kid her parents discovered she has perfect pitch, which is rare and allows her to actually name a note correctly just by hearing it. In other words, she needs no reference tone to be able to identify a note. You'll never here her live ever missing a note.
That's my favorite Carole King song ! Other singers / songs that come to mind: Laura Nyro "Stoned Soul Picnic" from 1968 album 'Eli & the 13th Confession' She was 21. Googie Coppola "Realize" from 1971 album 'Air' (her band's name) She was 21.
Carole King was born with perfect pitch and she started playing the piano when she's 4 years old you need to react to You've Got a Friend Carole King singing and writing it
Carole K' wrote songs with her husband Gerry G' in NYC at "the Brill Building" that were huge hits in the 1960's. The Beatles recorded two Goffin/King songs early, and when they got to the US in 1964, and met the songwriters, in pre-media time they no idea that C.King was a Woman. Arethaa Franklin, The Monkees, James Taylor all did songs. So When Carol and her husband divorced -she went out to L.A., became part of the singer/songwriter group, started playing her own concerts. She is in the Rock Hall twice -as a Songwriter with Gerry, and her own Solo work. A favorite of mine, too!
#1 in 1971, Toni Stern wrote the lyrics, but Carole wrote the music for this particular song. There is a concert she did for the BBC in 1971, which is well worth a viewing and listening to. Each generation to its own, it's not always easy to recognize and appreciate a great and timeless work. :)
Hi! First time visiting. Carole King,, had to!! Quick scanned some comments hoping not to repeat. Carole started as a professional song writer with her husband and many were hits like WILL YOU STILL LOVE ME TOMORROW a #1 hit for the Shirelles 1960. Over 400 songs covered by 1000 bands. She herself hated her voice and was talked into singing by her legendary friend James Taylor. Great Reaction and Nice Voice! I can hear you singing a Elton John song like,,,,,, (hmmm) LEVON or ALL THE GIRLS LOVE ALICE! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎🎸🤟🏼
one of the background singer is James Taylor (you got a friend) .... he recorded this although she wrote it and sung it on her second album -- Tapestry 1971 .. James also release this same song that same year .... ever heard of an album that every song listed is great ? --- this is the first one and it lasted many years as the most bought and played album ...
Carole King is a legendary songwriter from from that time period. That album, Tapestry, was a really big seller. I think every teenage girl at that time had a copy of it. That picture on the album where she's sitting on the window sill with the cat is iconic from that time. The cat's name is Telemachus, and he's kind of immortal now. Carole King was probably the most prolific songwriter of that time, but there was also Carly Simon, Joni Mitchell, and Linda Ronstadt.
I bought the Tapestry album when it first came out. Wore it out playing it relentlessly and bought another. It suffered the same fate. Carol King is fantastic!
Listen to Carole King’s “You’ve got a friend”, and then James Taylor’s version of the same song back-to-back. I believe JT’s was released first, but they were both huge hits on the radio at about the same time.
Carole King was a successful songwriter for over a decade, writing hits for various singers or groups. A producer finally convinced her to record an album herself...exactly as if she was demo-ing her songs for someone else to record. Minimal production...based just on her on piano & singing. The result was this album "Tapestry". ALL original songs. It was "Album of the year" & is considered one of best of alltime...even now, more than 50 years later,
Seminal song taken from one of the first and best of the "singer-songwriter", introspective, soft rock movement albums that started at the beginning of the 70s -- a movement some say was a direct reaction to the heaviness and excesses of the late 60s. Tapestry, James Taylor's Sweet Baby James and Don McLean's American Pie LPs are cornerstone examples of that great era.
Other female singer/songwriters of the era.......Stevie Nicks, Chistine McVie(both with Fleetwood Mac), Carly Simon, Ann and Nancy Wilson with the band Heart.
Carole King was an all-time great songwriter who wrote as many hits for others as she did for herself. Another singer-songwriter I'm sure Andrea will like is Carly Simon.
Carole King spent most of her early career as a pro songwriter for other artist until the era of the singer/songwriter came along in the 70's when she decided to sing some of her own songs and this album was the result and a huge hit.
She and Neil Diamond got their starts writing at about the same time. She co-wrote Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow with Gerry Goffin. This album was EVERYWHERE when it came out.
Like "Frampton Comes Alive", it was one of those albums that nearly EVERY friend had in their collection....back when we listened to vinyl. Back then, we had a phrase......."all killer, no filler." Now...we need to get you into some Steely Dan.

she's a genius songwriter, responsible for some classic melodies and songs, great chord progressions. She's a real treasure
agreed! i also released a new song recently that is heavily inspired by singer songwriters bit.ly/whylinger

Ground breaking album. The whole album is like she's in your house performing for you.
That whole album (Tapestry) is great.
i need to listen to more!!
Carol King’s “ Tapestry “ , still inspiring young singer- songwriters 50 years later, just like we knew it would back then ! 👍🏾✌🏽🎤🎹🥲
Real instruments + real vocals + recorded on analog tape = the reason so many reactors today find music from this era so impressive.
Tapestry album is a timeless masterpiece. Carol King is one of the most prolific and greatest songwriter/ composer ever.
Knowledge of her contribution to music history is mandatory.
Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!!!
Probably the best most "chill" break up song ever.

You cannot go wrong with Carole King or Carlie Simon. No electronic games, just talent
She loves the vocal layering and pauses just *before* 4:38 some of the best layering on any track, ever! But how could she know...?
She once said in an interview how she didn't understand why modern singers want to sing 4 notes on each syllable instead of actually working the note and melody.
Terrific reaction and technical breakdown, Andrea. I recommend So Far Away next - my favorite Carole King vocal.

Carole King, a true American Treasure. LOCOMOTION, PLEASANT VALLEY SUNDAY, UP ON THE ROOF. She wrote over 100 Top 100 Billboard hits.
Tapestry is a gem.
You need to react to Carole King being honored at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC Aretha Franklin sang her #1 hit Natural Woman which Carole King wrote for her, one of Aretha Franklin's last public appearances before she died
Her reaction to Aretha's performance is priceless.
I loved that Kennedy center honor when Aretha sang that!

thanks for watching! i also have my music as well that i just released bit.ly/whylinger
That's my favorite Carole King song !
Other singers / songs that come to mind:
Laura Nyro "Stoned Soul Picnic" from 1968 album 'Eli & the 13th Confession' She was 21.
Googie Coppola "Realize" from 1971 album 'Air' (her band's name) She was 21.
You nailed it with your excellent analysis.
thanks! feel free to listen to my music too bit.ly/whylinger
Carole King was born with perfect pitch and she started playing the piano when she's 4 years old you need to react to You've Got a Friend Carole King singing and writing it
Welcome to the ‘rabbit hole’ of AMAZING 70s singer-songwriters !!!
ty!
Carole King, Neil Diamond, and a few others created the singer-songwriter genre: first writing hit songs for others, then performing their own music.
One of those truly epic albums
Both MUST HEAR Classic tracks,, Carole King "Smackwater Jack" & "I Feel The Earth Move" 🔥 ...Nuff Said.
One of the top songwriters of all time.
The entire Tapestry album is excellent and a classic.
Plus - a Cat, on the album cover!!!
i'm excited to listen to more!
I was a sophomore in high school and every song is etched in my mind, still one of the great ones in music history.
Every young woman in America had this album, Andrea.
and guys!
You should also hear her sing Jazzman, from the album Wrap around Joy. It’s a big hit.
Check her catalog - the number of hits she has written for herself and others is astonishing. Carole King is a songwriting genius.
What were the 70's like? That album cover... The light, the mood, the clothes... Love it.
I can hear you singing a Elton John song like,,,,,, (hmmm) LEVON or
ALL THE GIRLS LOVE ALICE!
Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎🎸🤟🏼
A great album.
one of the background singer is James Taylor (you got a friend) .... he recorded this although she wrote it and sung it on her second album -- Tapestry 1971 .. James also release this same song that same year ....
ever heard of an album that every song listed is great ? --- this is the first one and it lasted many years as the most bought and played album ...
I'm in my 60's, I wore out the 8-track tape, owned it on cassette and CD. It is just one of those seminal albums...
I hope that you do more of this kind of thing ... this felt fresh, unaffected and interesting
Carole was influential for many artists who followed.
Ladies and Gentlemen . . . . the one and only Carole KIng ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
“Tapestry” was actually the top-selling album of all time until it was dethroned by Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”.
Her Tapestry album is excellent
I bought the Tapestry album when it first came out. Wore it out playing it relentlessly and bought another. It suffered the same fate. Carol King is fantastic!
Carole is on piano. She was a songwriter before she began to sing and record her songs. She wrote hit songs in the 60s for other people.
My favorite on the record is "So Far Away"...genius.
added to the list !
Listen to Carole King’s “You’ve got a friend”, and then James Taylor’s version of the same song back-to-back. I believe JT’s was released first, but they were both huge hits on the radio at about the same time.
That whole album is really, really good. Thanks for sharing this song.
ty!!
Almost every teenager had this album back in the day. The girls, anyway!
When this came out my best friend was trying to woo this girl, so he bought Tapestry...alway liked Carol King ...she did too...😊
Listen and learn from one of the masters, Carole King.
yes! i feel inspired, but here is my music and where I'm starting from bit.ly/whylinger
Carole King was an all-time great songwriter who wrote as many hits for others as she did for herself. Another singer-songwriter I'm sure Andrea will like is Carly Simon.
thanks! added to the list, feel free to listen to my music too bit.ly/whylinger
Carole King spent most of her early career as a pro songwriter for other artist until the era of the singer/songwriter came along in the 70's when she decided to sing some of her own songs and this album was the result and a huge hit.
The whole Tapestry album was awesome
King had all the musicians play together-same room-same time-to get that "live" effect.
Wife here. The WHOLE album is awesome!!!! I borrowed my moms then later got me own copy . You have a nice tone to your voice.
thanks!! feel free to listen to my new song bit.ly/whylinger
She is only one of the Best singer/songwriters ever, listen and enjoy. 🎶
CK and James Taylor had a similar approach to writing songs, at exactly the same time. Great to reminisce!
