  • Second Division Bristol City had a bit of a cup run in 80/81 reaching the 5th round where they drew First Division Nottingham Forest away. They made a good game of it but went down to two late goals, nevertheless the cup run was a brief bright spot in a dismal season.

I have a Bristol City away shirt No 11, long sleeve from that era. Given to me by the club. Possibly the one Clive Whitehead was wearing that day.

Remember this game distinctly. There was a guy behind me sitting in what is now the Brian Clough stand who moaned and slagged the team off throughout the game. Admit we had an off day but you still get behind the team but not this guy. He particularly had it in for Ian Wallace so when Wallace scored I thought he would pipe down. Nope it was now “Come on Lads” and what a star Wallace was. Typical Forest home fan of the 80’s. Think VAR might have been looking at Wallace’s goal for offside but hey it wasn’t pretty but got the job done 😂

Unlucky from Bristol City who were relegated that season ,and ran the first half against the at the time European champions.

If it hadn't been for that unfortunate penalty I think we'd have hung on, and their second looked like an own goal following a desperate lunge by one of our defenders
