Same here -- to help me through the scary parts (especially the part with the boogeyman in VII), she and my older sisters once gave me a "magic potion" to make me fearless.

I've looked the game up over the years and never found much information, but I was just reminded of it today and I'm excited to finally see what happens. You know, 28 years later. :P
The desert was perhaps the worst part. You had to map it yourself (and don't forget to write down where the important items and landmarks are) and you had to frequently find an oasis or water in general so you don't die of thirst.

In late 90s we had an ancient computer- but it could play this. My dad brought this game home for us to play. He told me if I could get past the snake he’d get me the sequel. I did. To this day, I always credit problem solving ability to the way these games made me think systematically.
I remember the demo or shareware version of this came with an IBM Windows 3.1 PC Junior. That's right, this was BEFORE mainstream commercial internet and downloading free demos. It was an awesome game as a kid therefore 10-15 years later when I saw the collection for Windows I just had to get it so I could finish playing KQV. Same for Police Quest and Leisure Suit Larry.
Someone came up with the idea of making Cedric the most annoying sidekick in videogame history, and whole bunch of other people said "yes, this is a great idea".
I only got to the beach using an instruction manual and made no further progress. There are things that you can do in this game that make it impossible to progress any further but the game gives you no fair warning. For example, you can't eat the custard pie, you have to save it for the Yeti. If you go into the forest without the amulet or the genie lamp you can never get out. And if the cat catches the mouse then too bad, you should have been quicker. Yet the game lets you keep trying even though there is no hope. Otherwise the game was enjoyable, and the graphics were very good for the early 1990's.
At 1:48:40 my brother and I would always make a save and walk of the cliff, killing Cedric. Our death was worth it to get some revenge against that annoying owl!!
If they are going to use a recording of an acoustic guitar, just have the singing tree holding a guitar!! Also, Alexander is drawn pretty buff when we see him at the end, yet, in KQ6, which takes places after this, he has trouble wielding a larger sword.
The crux of this game is: Be nice to animals, a bully to gnomes and elfish folk, and if you randomly find something, it will be most certainly useful later.

Well, those were the days, the golden principle of 'being able to die' point and clicks: SAVE EVERYTHING especially when entering a dangerous area, NEVER go past a room without thoroughly examining it, NEVER give something greater in value than what is required (if the shopkeep says silver coin do not give him a gold coin) and, last but not least, never think an action is too ridiculous to try out (pie on yeti, cheese in the wand machine...).
This series is so nostalgic since I played it with my family as a kid, but I don't know how we ever figured out half of the solutions. I think this might be the most unfairly difficult game in the series (aside from the Rumpelstiltskin puzzle in KQ1). One of the things that struck me on my current playthrough was: How would I ever know to try searching the haystack again after saving the ants?
