- Svaneti or Svanetia (Suania in ancient sources) (Georgian: სვანეთი Svaneti) is a historic province in Georgia, in the northwestern part of the country. It is inhabited by the Svans, an ethnic subgroup of Georgians.
Svanetia is known for their architectural treasures and picturesque landscapes. The botany of Svanetia is legendary among travelers.[citation needed] The famous Svanetian towers erected mainly in the 9th-12th centuries, make the region’s villages more attractive. In the province are dozens of Georgian orthodox churches and various fortified buildings. Architectural monuments of Upper Svanetia are included in a list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Svan culture survives most wonderfully in its songs and dances. Svanetia boasts arguably the most archaic three-part polyphonic singing. Most of their songs are connected to round dances, are performed very loud and are full of dissonant chords.

I'll Suggest: Mtskheta, Tbilisi, Signagi, Mestia, Kazbegi, Gudauri Or Bakuriani (in winter), also in summer I will suggest Paragraph Hotel in Shekvetili you can search it on google its really good. Paragraph hotel is so close to Batumi so you can also visit that city.

Very important Warning .... Most of people from Arab counties has hate to travel to Georgia because there are many passengers from Oman, Dubai, Sudi, Qater, Kuwait ... etc have travelled to Georgia but the officer of Airport of Georgia has informed these passengers that not allowed to enter Georgia so the officer said to passngers to go back to same aircraft to their country ... without any reason. Espically it is not required Visa from these countries according to the relealtionships in both counteies. So in each aircraft the officer has to return back from 5 to 10 passengers but other passengers said no problem.
If Georgia Government use this system then there are a lot of countries in the world better than Georgia.
Please dont travel to Georgia at all.

I will be going to Georgia (Backpacking) Any tips/must visits? I start in Batumi
Be careful with the taxi drivers and at restaurants, as sometimes they charge more than what u have to pay. Other than that, there are no particular threats in here for tourists. It depends for how long you are planning to stay. After you are done seeing Batumi and trying Ajarian Khachapuri, must see places are: Zugdidi - because of the Megrelian cuisine and you can take a taxi to canyons in nearby villages. Also, you can take a "Marshutka" (a mini bus) to Svaneti. Both in Samegrelo and Svaneti, they speak languages, which have never been written. Svaneti is beautiful and if the weather is good, there are cars, which take tourists to the highest settlement in Europe - village Ushguli.
Gelati and Bagrati monasteries and Sataplia and Promete Caves in Kutaisi.
Rabati Castle in Akhaltsikhe and definitely try cuisine from this part of the country when you are there. It has so many exotic dishes, such as snails, etc., which are unfamiliar in other parts of the country. You could also takw tour to Vardzia, which is a town carved in a cave.
Then you can visit Gori, homerown of Joseph Stalin and they've got the museum. Then it is Mtskheta - really close to Tbilisi. Jvari and Svetitskhoveli cathedrals in Mtskheta have particular value for Georgians. They are iconic.
You can also go to Kazbegi, Stepantsminda and visit Gergeti. This is the part of Georgia, where you usually try Khinkali, but you can get Khinkali in every part of Georgia.
Amazing sight indeed. And then it is Tbilisi. As most of the tours in Tbilisi are classic - old towns, sulphur baths, Sameba cathedral, etc., I would suggest that if you want to see the real city, you should walk through the old streets of Sololaki, with amazing old homes, doors and gates and the halls of those buildings. Visit Dezertirebi bazaar (near the station square). New Aghmashenebeli ave. Is also an interesting sight. Take a tour of the national museum.
My favorite place to eat Khinkali in Tbilisi, is Khinkali House and Tabla. Actually the last one has so many varieties of Khinkali dishes - my favorite is small Khinkalis in paprika sauce.
After Tbilisi, people usually go to Kakheti, which is a wine region. Visit Signagi, Telavi, Alaverdi, Gremi, Tsinandali. All of them are amazing places. You can also go to David Gareji, there are some tensions regarding its territory, between Georgia and Azerbaijan, but nothing really concerning.

Yes, I am a Georgian myself. And you are right, Georgia is the place where the wine originates from - archeologists have found fossils dating far back in Stone Age, proving that people there, were the oldest winemakers, producing wine on a really large scale. If I am not mistaken, there is a tourist site at the very place where the fossils have been found, but I am not sure.
If you've already decided to go to Ushguli, I would suggest renting a special car with a driver, because the road is dangerous and one should really know its intricacies while driving there. You can find such service in Mestia, which is a central town in Svaneti region. Getting to Mestia is not a problem, a good road leads there and then you should rent a Delica and get to Ushguli.

@@anaezdil9441 Hi, We have rented a 4x4 car (Mitsubishi Pajero) for our stay, but not a driver. I am aware of the danger on certain roads as I have read it online aswell, thanks for the information. We do not have a driver, but we will make the best out of it, the car is quitte big and all-risk covered plus I have a lot of driving expierence (and also in remote regions in the Balkans). Anyway I know that driving can be very though but we make the best out of it.
