I would go through and re-test the animal bulbs but using the Reptisun 5.0 t8, Reptisun 10.0 t8, Arcadia 12% t8 and Arcadia 14% t8 bulbs. They generally run cheaper than the ones you mentioned here and in my personal experience are much more efficient, even over larger areas.

Pretty sure quartz glass passes all or most of the UVB and UVC. Source I use to keep fish and all the UVC bactericidal lights all had quartz glass sleeves between the bulb and the water, you needed to order specialist quartz sleeves as normal glass tubes resulted in bacti/algal blooms in the tanks (high load systems).

I owned and operated a chain of tanning salons with powerful tanning beds putting out both UVA and UVB. Yes you should wear eye protection, but these light don't have enough output to burn you nearly as much as a 20 minute tanning bed with 24-36 6ft GLASS bulbs, although the jury seems to be out on how much improvement they offer to a grow.

It's a Bell curve. Joules go up exponentially as the frequency increases. 1 photon @ 285nm has more energy than 1000 photos at 315nm.

UVA 25% - UVB 75% 45 watts t5, and the Agromax plus UVA 45watt t5, and the 10,000k finisher bulbs there the best, I immediately noticed the difference like night and day, I've been growing the same Runtz strain for over a year now and when I added the UV spectrum they noticeably got more potent more trich's, I run them for an hour a day( right at the halfway mark of my lighting schedule simulating High Noon 12:00), then constantly/12hours with my LED's at the end of flower ( I even hit my plants in flowering with UVC to kill all mold spores, it really works, I run 40-60% humidity in flower the resin damn-near be running down the stems from the buds) I run the UVC 3mins a day twice a day sun up and sun down (in flower 3 times a day one extra time mid day/high noon/in the middle of the light schedule) ...... ✌❤

Hi Mark. Great info + well presented as always.
A small point I want to raise: I was lead to believe (via the adjust-a-wings website) that it is actually bare aluminium that absorbs UV photons and that a special white-coated aluminium is best for reflecting UV. This is why they (AAW) supply white “wings” with their CMH fixtures.
    Thoughts?

I wonder if the uvb causing resin production simply causes cannabalization like during flushing or actually is bleaching the flower... either way both can be fixed but the cannabalizism is good in my eyes cause I only add uvb during flush after using the eye hortilux blue mh->ceramic hps both 600w (Ive been tinkering with a sativa blend indoor so I need blue during veg to help with height after trying other wise hps them all the way through for massive ladies..). I wonder if they just needa move it back some or simply remove its reflector/lower its efficiency (remove some reflective/coat some surface..)

    • @ozarkhippie
      @ozarkhippie 4 роки тому

@@prestontingley8914 UVB or any UV to my knowledge doesn't cause cannibalization directly ime. And if you're getting bleached tops or burnt leaves its simply too much light, UV, even too much heat. My UV lamps stay on with my reg lights bout 24" to 18" from canopy and all my leaves point up right at my UV lights. I turn them on when I flip the lights to 12/12, some people like to use it in veg too but I haven't seen much benefit doing so. I use T5 ho 14% UVB Acadia bulbs as said in my original comment. Change them every 6 months of useage for best results, the UV output drops as bulbs get used. Back to your question one could assume the increase in THC from UVB exposure might make the plant need/use more nutes. Although one wouldn't think it would be much of a metabolic increase considering the THC increase is only around 25% by ratio. But this could lead said plants to cannibalizing but not bleaching given the rare situation but I'd doubt it as much of a factor tbh. That's my best theory for you friend, a majority of growing knowledge isn't proven its anecdotal for the most part. So take it with a grain of salt but I pride my myself on correctness so I'm not the guy spreading total bs bro science hurting the community instead of helping it. I'd recommend you learn to build some LED lights with HLG boards. It's easy man and super worth while. It'll help alot with heat overall which is probably your issue from what it sounds like. But if you're dead set on HIDs the 315 CMH\LECs with bulbs in 3100k are perfect for full cycle vs the ceramic HPS which has a poor spectrum in comparison. Also you can use them for full cycle no need to change lights or bulb from veg to flower. Also the 315w versions have the most options and its not a total death ray in the center of the light footprint like with more powerful lights which I think is most likely your issue. The 630w CMHs with 2 315w bulbs are the best of the HIDs even over the DE versions they bring more to the table. But if I was you I'd finish my crop if I had one going then sell that light and learn to build a LED light. Specifically HLG best price, high efficiency/low heat output, best tech, best spectrum. Happy growing man.

APPARENTLY SHANE SEEMS VERY AGAINST THIS! IT LOOKS TO HAVE A GOOD AMOUNT OF UVB, AS WELL AS UVA, AND SHANE'S GOT THE METERS, AND I'VE GRAPPLED WITH THIS QUESTION SEVERAL TIMES HERE.
NO RESPONSE. THEN SHANE STARTED SELLING "CMH" KITS, AND I BEGGED FOR A REVIEW THEN, ESPECIALLY!
MAYBE THEY'RE PERFECT FOR UVB? MUCH MORE WATTAGE!
      MAYBE NOT?
WHEN PERTINENT INFORMATION IS MISSING, THERE'S SOMETHING "THEY" DON'T WANT YOU TO KNOW!
HOWEVER, SHANE IS ALWAYS STRAIGHT UP HONEST! AND PRESENTS THESE LIGHT FIXTURES MORE ACCURATELY, AND HONESTLY THEN ANYONE I'VE HEARD!
WHAT SHANE SAYS, I KNOW IS ACCURATE! WITH THE GREAT EQUIPMENT HE HAS, ESPECIALLY HIS MIND, HE'S MORE THAN PROVEN THIS!
STILL VERY STRANGE THOUGH? HE DID SAY HE TESTED HID LIGHTING, BUT I BELIEVE THAT WAS ONLY HPS/MH, NO CMH, DEFINITELY NOT THE 10,000K!
I'LL SEND HIM A NEW ONE TO TEST, IF HE'S INTERESTED. I HAVE 3-4 NEW ONE'S!
PLENTY OF UVA, THEN THE GRAPH STOPS AT UVB, GETTING LOWER, BUT STILL AROUND A .4-.5 IN INTENSITY WHEN THE GRAPH STOPS. MAYBE LOWER AMOUNTS OF UVB, BUT 315W, NOT 30W? IF ANYONE KNOWS ANYONE WHO HAS TESTED THESE, AND SHOWS THE UVB RANGE, PLEASE, LET ME KNOW
BOUGHT A FEW 315W 10,000K LAMPS ON SALE. ONE CRACKED IN SHIPMENT, AND THEY SENT 2 MORE. SO I HAVE A FEW NEW ONE's, IF NEEDED TO TEST?👍💜🙏

We supposed to start hardening off the plants before planting out. When I've done this, the plants are suffering from sun scolding/burning as maybe the plants are not used to the UV rays?
Would using UV indoors at intivals help bulk up the leaves to make them stronger and withstand the suns rays and hopefully lessen the time of hardening off the plants (as long as temps are right)?

Hey Shane, Seti/Seoul-Viosys has developed a 280-290nm UVB LED exactly for this purposes and they claim to produce around 10mW at 6v/150mA. You can get them from digikey and their part.-no. is TUD8MF1B, description: CUD8GF1B on starboard. They cost around 20€ each. 10mW does not sound like much but according to the data sheet it's quite enough. The only thing missing is some UVA but that's not a problem with LED's. A few 365nm diodes should provide enough UVA to make it a "healthy UVA/B combination".

Hi, our 20W UVB Fluorescent delivers 110µw/cm2 UVB over a 1.5m x 1.5m space (2.25m2). This is a total UVB of 110 x 2.25 x 10,000 (1m2 in cm2) = 2,475,000 µw or 2,475 mw of UVB. You would need 245 x 10mw LEDs to do the same job. They are nowhere near as effective as Fluorescent I'm afraid. Link to MIGRO UVB here: www.migrolight.com/product/migro-uvb-310/

too bad agromax are only available through HTG and if you aint in USA they dont ship outside of the US so your light is the best UVB available to the world market and just take my money. If we could just get a little lower prices on that shipping that would be great but I aint complaining! It would help if you knew more about your subject. Let's start with that the photoreceptor for UVB is UVR8. UVR8's peak sensitivity is at 285-288 nm. High frequency UVB (< 300 nm) has, per Zhang and Bjorn, TEN TIMES the photoactivity that low frequency UVB (> 300 nm). So just stating that a particular lamp emits four times as many UVB "photons" without being specific as to the wavelengths being emitted, is not a sufficient comparison to base a lighting purchase on.

So if I just have UVA then I would need to extend the time period the light is on? I think I heardUVB is 10/100 more potent than UVA so if it’s 10 times I could just leave it on for a day then off for a day? But if it’s 100 times I would need to increase the intensity along with the amount of time per light cycle. Note: I have multiple UVA lamps so intensity wouldn’t be an issue.

Newer lights such as Lec Cmh and Smd Leds have more uv than the older lights you really dont need to add any if your using these lights they have enough to harm you without protection . Uv also keeps the bugs from biting your tomatoes .

Tony Lemon it also helps to prevent mildew, and reduce the time needed for hardening off of tomatoes and pepper plants when you take full size plants outside in April. Isn’t it fun to have full size plants when your neighbors are just buying seedlings?

  • @ThePotGeeki

It is important to note, which it was not in this video, that the receptor for UVB, which is called UVR8, has its peak sensitivity at 285 -288 nanometers (nm) of wavelength. Bioactive of the type we're trying to promote is TEN TIMES greater at 285 than it is at 300 nm. So just saying something has 4 times as much UVB, without mentioning the specific frequencies, and the difference in bioactivity reflects either incomplete research into the subject or deliberate deception. I prefer to believe it's the former.

D4rk BliZz4rd UV is strongest when sun is closest to earth. As the earth rotates the UV strength increases and decreases in direct proportion, sun typically is closest to earth at noon. See Perihelion and Aphelion, those calendar dates when sun is closest and furthest from earth. At more acute angles the UV is scattered by the atmosphere.

Now whe have many plants that have evolved under hps with no uv-b so many new strains may have been selected to have near max potency without uv-b.
As long as you only get normal reptile flourescents you can just try it out quite cheaply - only need 6h per day only for later flowering (?last 14 days?)

I have been using 10k metal halides aka H.I.D for supplemental uva and uvb spectra for over 10 years. I tried the uv t5 ho crap and it doesn't work the amount of uvb emitted is too low. In a 10k 1000w metal halide about 30% of the spectral energy is within the UV spectra. But remember not every 10k metal halide is made equal some will emit very low amounts of uvb and high amounts of uva while others will emit more uvb and maybe even some UVC.

If hung vertically around the plant it would side-light the vertical buds and kind of skip past the horizontal leaves, right?
