Now I understand my electrician husband's "hurry up and wait" jobs. He can't pull a meter unless it is an absolute emergency. He did have a call once where a customer had problems and he discovered that the wiring from the meter into the house was on fire inside the wall. He yanked the meter and started pulling the siding off the house (after calling the fire department and grabbing an extinguisher). He got the fire out and saved the house. I’m a transmission operator in the US. Your procedure for switching, even down to whether or not you get an email or hand write the steps, using cell phone instead of radio, waiting for crews at multiple ends of the line, and calling to verify clear, is all almost exactly the same as we do it. Keep up the great work!

I worked for a Co-op that had prewritten instructions for almost every scenario possible in a 3 ring binder in every truck. It was great. Rather than print, email or write every instruction we went to page XX and went through the steps. I like using the radio better than the phone.
Congrats Dan on ur 42 years from an old Substation Electrician/ Switchman . Did 38 yrs. NW Indiana winters with lake effect. Been out 13 . Still miss the guys, but not enough to move back . That was real nice. wishing Dan the best retirement and a big thank you for the years of work keeping the power on all them years. I am a electrician in Boston NY,US and we shear the same power grid. I have held up before waiting on linemen to cut power or remove meter for me. a power outage takes priority over me changing out a service when the power is on for me. glad you pointed out that neutral jumper in place before running new line.
As an electrician myself it’s nice to see the gear further up in the system, even if it is in Canada, the principles are the same. I’m hoping a UK counterpart starts a blog one day.
I wonder how the pole potential was handled. Also, how they are tied together. I wonder how many understand the induction potential. I would not have thought of the higher voltages going over the work area as a danger. I hope Dan has a great well-deserved retirement. I am expecting in our field to have several guys possibly retire soon. We are not having great luck at recruiting new employees. We all miss those great fellas. It takes time to make it really look easy and work efficiently. There is a day that comes that we must pass the torch. Soon you realize how much that one person has done to help the crew and how much they did. Looks like some big shoes to fill.
I think I mentioned this before, but I'll say it again.. being a ham radio operator, I love seeing how you guys operate on the radio.. Very professional and efficient. Pretty cool to see !
I know you put a lot of time into these videos, and although I am not a Lineman, I have done a lot of electrical work. I have never seen any of your videos where you didn't explain things where even I could understand them (I get about 90% right off) :) I want you to know how much I enjoy watching your videos!! Your short camera time certainly conveys your positive attitude and inspiration extended to all involved in the service. I had one like that just a few years ago, jerked out the meter and replaced the wires and electrical box.
I would absolutely love to hear Dan talk about line work back in the early 1980s. How it used to be, "you kids got it easy...." stuff.
