I put each piston at TDC and used berryman b12 and wooden dowels to scrube the tough spots for pistons still in the block. Then when 99% done a wrag to final wipe with some brake clean to remove residue
I have a video coming soon of the engine dissassembly. You essentially remove the cylinder head(s), oil pan, piston rod caps and bolts then pull the pistons out of the block.

I wouldn't have thought to use Chem dip for cleaning pistons.
