More about Gianmarco:
Gianmarco Soresi is a stand-up comedian, actor, and a little too much for some people. He’s told jokes on The Late Late Show with James Corden, Comedy Central, Netflix’s Bonding, Don’t Tell, The Real Housewives of New York for some reason, and he was a JFL New Face in 2022. He’s acted in Billy Crystal’s Here Today, Hustlers, The Last OG, and in his theater days shared the stage with some people who’ve gone on to become huge real estate agents. You can see him post the kind of crowdwork clips that are arguably destroying the artform of stand-up comedy everywhere @gianmarcosoresi and he obviously has a podcast called The Downside with Gianmarco Soresi.🎤

Gianmarco, I've been a deaf fan of your comedy for a few years now and want to thank you for almost always captioning your videos as well as including interpreters at your shows.
My only feedback I'd give is to remember that the interpreters are only able to be there because of the deaf people who came to see your show. There's a lot to be said about interpreters in the entertainment world and the blurring of the lines between being an interpreter and being a performer, and no one expects you to know all the nuances about that, but next time, just talk to the deaf people, not the interpreters. Next time I dare you to ask the deaf people what's the weirdest or most embarrassing interpreter story they've had or heard of. You'll be in for a ride!
Looking forward to catching one of your shows someday in socal! 🤟🏼
He’s breaking the fifth wall by talking to his interpreters 😂😂
Fifth wall is talking to critics, this has to be the sixth wall
@@Senriamso many walls!
That’s like… 16 walls.
Now there's a 5th wall in performing arts??
@@Kingdom_Of_Dreams interpreters?
I'm surprised the interpreters didn't respond to "What's the weirdest gig you've ever done?" with "This one."
Just showed this isnt the weirdest thing to happen
I’m sure that’ll be the “shirt through the zipper” woman’s answer from now on though 😅
My thoughts exactly
interpreters: do their job translating the performance
gianmarco: You Are Now Part Of The Performance
That will sometimes happen at music concerts. When rappers get going, so do the ASL interpreters. Then the rapper notices what the interpreter is doing and watches them while rapping. If they weren't performing at that moment, their jaws would be on the ground.
He has to make it messy lol
I'm confused tho, why is there a third person involved in the system?
@@elliotw.888 I'm not sure which person you're talking about, but here's what I understood it to be: 1) there's obviously the performer, gianmarco, 2) two interpreters that take shifts, and 3) the deaf/hoh person for whom they interpret (and their party). I think it wasn't the venue's idea to have asl interpreters
@@запрещнкаI read that as "deaf/hot person for which they interpret" and i was like i understand pretty people are treated nicer but this is just unnecessary
5:41 the way the interpreter turned towards gianmarco is so funny 😂
I died. She's quick and funny too!
I think that was my favourite part
Honestly that one was so good it looked scripted holy molu
Agreed. Best part. And his reaction when he looked over at her was hilarious too
It's funny to see Gianmarco do his usual "hunch over", then the interpreter hunch over with signs
It's wild to me I never considered sign language interpreters would have to sign for the crowd reaction or instructions for a mother giving birth like it makes complete sense now that I think about it
Gianmarco is my idol for saving awkward situations and learning to bask in awkwardness. Like he genuinely turns it into an organic brand of fun and you can't do anything but laugh with him 😂
Exactly! I love this about him. It's star quality.
This is his first time having ASL interpreters, and I love how he’s not cruel or rude or dehumanizing of them, but instead eager to learn, getting educated in real time, genuinely fascinated and trying hard not to inconvenience them too much, but also full of genuine wonder and respect for them. Very humble! Honestly I feel that too, those interpreters are amazing!! Teaching him the rules, patient, expressive, professional, and SMART
I would love to watch an hour and a half of this guy just having fun discovering what interpreters are like
I’m an ASL interpreter, and that looked absolutely miserable to interpret 😂. But they handled it with grace.
i've seen a couple comedians post about this same kind of thing and they like always only have the interpreter in frame, or cut back and forth between the comic and the interpreter and it's really annoying. most of them don't subtitle the stuff either. thanks for clearly editing this to make it accessible but also just like... quality? appreciate all you do, gianmarco.
hilarious playing with the crowd and interpreters
5:05 Why does this interpretation live rent free in my head? I don't have the courage to ask it to move out yet.
Me signing women be shopping but shaking my head the whole time so people dont think im cringe
That gosh darned thousand yard stare he does sometimes, gets me every time
Love that you have the interpreter on screen instead of just cutting back and forth!
That interpreter was having so much fun😭😭
That was so much fun to watch! It's so fun to see the different ways that interpreters sign. The extra emotion and faces and things. Each interpreter brings their own flair to the speech. Their reactions to Gianmarco were hilarious.
I need to refresh my ASL. I go to Coachella every year and half the time end up watching the interpreters for pop and hip hop acts because they're more engaging than the actual performer 🤣
I am laughing so much that the translation of "nazi" is a finger as a moustache and an open hand up
I stil think "Women be shopping" it's one of your best jokes xD
This is genius, more comedians should do this !
I love the interactions with the interpreters, the constants faces the interpreters make while signing 😂
It’s incredible how she finger spells so quickly!! Also I imagine you need to be pretty good at spelling lol
I worked a a festival recently, where all the bands had sign language interpreters on stage. It was awesome to know deaf people could get more out of the shows, but they also danced and stuff, totally adding to the overall good vibe, really really cool.
the sign for donald trump imitates his hair! a lot of signs for people are based on notable caracteristics
Yes I noticed that the sign for Joe Biden was his aviators! 😂
Holy shit that interpreter is top fucking tier.
I love that they're always in on the joke!! 😂 hilarious
'its the interpreters fault" KINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG GIVE THUS MAN A NETFLIX SPECIAL
This is one of the most brilliant things in comedy that I've seen since a lot. It seemed involuntary, not prepared, but man how you treated the situation made me laugh a lot, and also I think and hope that for deaf people it was also better. I wish that more comedians worked alongside with an interpreter for the deaf people's sake but also because a lot of comedy can be created by the interaction on stage!
I love that the second interpreter would sort of do Gianmarco’s lean when he did it and she was signing. It’s such a fun detail
Love Gianmarco, and the interpreters were amazing. He should have them at every show. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
This is so eye-opening as a hearing person and I appreciate it so much. Will have to educate myself more, clearly.
11:43 i love how she signed i'm sorry xD
This was INCREDIBLE
One of my friends is an ASL interpreter. She is shy and had to interpret for a college human sexuality course. Many of the signs were gestures, not spelling out words. She never did that again.
So funny, great way to start a Sunday morning with a lot of laughs.
I had a friend who was an ASL interpreter. She had great stories.
This is seriously a work of art in the making.
11:25 her "wiping my hands of this byeeeeeee" KILLED me
Everything is material for this man 😂
I learned so many signs i didnt know before from this special 😂❤
The expressions on the signers faces are really funny as they sign along with him. I’m glad that they are able to swap out when they get tired.
gawd you're more than amazing💌
That was great! Those interpeters deserve all the kudos!!!
This reminds me of Trevor Noah’s bit about the UN sign language interpreter in ALL the best ways!
As an interpreting student I would like to let Gianmarco know that this set broke so many interpreting rules but it was amazing
This is beautiful, I really love this and this kinda reignited my interest in learning ASL. When I was young I taught myself the alphabet & clearly forgot it but this was hilarious, even more funny with the signing lmao
Today I learned that the sign for "Joe Biden" is just gesturing giant sunglasses 🤣0:44
That first one was incredible I loved her!
Please come to Vancouver soon King
This was truly awesome!
would love you to come to scotland sometime!!
0:31 SHE THREW THAT SHIT UP SO FAST I CANT 😭😭
I could never watch a show with an interpreter because I would be distracted the entire time and not fully enjoy the performance, but I think it's really cool how readily you've embraced them and their assistance!
This was absolute gold 😂
That. Was. EPIC.
Best comedy show ever. 😂
yes
oh wow this is really cool
She is an AMAZING interpreter omg
I've seen the short version of this more than 5 times and only just noticed she's also interpreting some of the audience reactions because of course deaf people aren't going to know how the crowd is reacting behind them. Never occurred to me they'd interpret anything more than just the performer, fascinating stuff
The interpreter version of when the closed captioning says "Curious music playing in the background", but much more clearer.
Oh wow, never knew this. I can't even imagine how much skill keeping up with everything takes
Facial expression and the intensity/vibe of the movements are also crucial to sign language. They’re like tone of voice, and she’s playing his snark perfectly.
When I graduated from high school we had a sign language interpreter and sometimes when we would cheer for someone she'd translate it.
I can not begin to understand how insanely difficult it must be to pay attention to Gianmarco, understand everything he says, translate in real time, translate the reactions and gestures and still keep up with him. That's ridiculous, that woman is amazing.
But does she deserve to vote???
(This is a joke please don't hate me)
@@TheSabadine I don't knoooooooww!!
Women* plural. And interpreters in general, it's truly astonishing, their focus, my ADHD self can not imagine
And deaf people have to understand her ASL, too!
she is also exaggerating the mouth movements with the words he is saying for the deaf people to lip-read!
Acknowledging the interpreters in the set itself might have led to adorable chaos but it was truly beautiful to see Gianmarco highlight that not only are they assisting him on stage, he is sharing the stage with them. The spotlight he put on their work and their experiences does that very important job. Adored the running gag of "women being allowed to vote" and the hilarious faces the interpreter pulled as she translated it, as well as the shock and indignation of the other interpreter when he sneaks in "it's the interpreter's fault" in the middle of his affirmations. An amazing trio. Gianmarco is probably the only comedian I would actually want to save up and travel to see. That being said, him coming to India, bleak as the chance may be, would obviously be fantastic.
I jumped on tickets 2 hours away to see him when he heads over to Tacoma in a couple weeks. I'm stoked!
I would spend all my savings if he ever visits India ngl
Aye another Indian fan!
I'd pay to watch him in India for sure
Gianmarco breaks pretty much every rule of interpreting, but that was some truly beautiful chaos
i am just curious, in what ways does he do that? i don't know even a single rule of interpreting
At its most basic, you speak to the Deaf person and the Deaf person signs to you, with the interpreter to the side in the Deaf person's field of vision doing their job. The interpreter, in this context, is a living accessibility tool, there for work, not for their own pleasure. Similar to other sorts of real-time translators.
The biggest difference, tho, is that distracting or engaging directly with the interpreter is more like distracting/engaging with a guide dog. You are preventing the Deaf person from getting the accommodation they need and treating them as less of a person than the interpreter.
A lot of people don't know this, tho, so typically an interpreter will explain this at the beginning of an interaction. At a gig, however, sometimes not all of the performers are appropriately briefed
@@nc4494It’s like petting a working service dog. When they’re interpreting or working, they’re basically an extension of the person or people that need their help. You should treat them as if they either aren’t there or are an extension of that person or group of people. By interacting with them directly while they work, you are interrupting their ability to service the people they’re helping, as well as making their job a lot harder (as you can see with the struggle to communicate when he was trying to ask the interpreters questions themselves). It’s great to be curious and want to learn, but you really should wait for when they’re off duty to ask so the person they’re helping is still receiving all the information they need, such as asking the interpreter that’s sitting the question so she can answer directly and the one working can interpret that for the client or person in need. To bring back the service dog metaphor, it’s like telling a working dog they’re doing great. You really shouldn’t do that because they’re on the job, so they need to focus. Hope this helped
@@-c3202 That makes a lot of sense. I guess the difference in this case is that the communication between the two became part of the comedy.
@@-c3202 That's my guess as far as what caused most of the hijinks, he probably wasn't briefed. Cause that's not something everybody intuitively knows if they're not around ASL and interpreters. Though part of me is glad he wasn't, because it made great comedy.
On a related note, if you've never seen ASL interpreters translating rap, do yourself a favor and look it up: it's amazing stuff 😮
ESPECIALLY if it's the super fast stuff, like that clip with Twista at a show.
i know a very specific clip with this interpreter doing eminem. absolutely fucking insane
Oh my god!!! I have to see this! Thanks 😊
[Enters UA-cam blackhole]
I will go do that, it sounds cool 😆
The interpreters are nailing this! The ways Gianmarco included them into his performance was so hilarious!
11:40 LOL I love how the interpreter on stage apologizes to the other interpreter right after interpreting the joke HAHAHA
Why did she do so?
@@kathleesi Because the joke was making fun of the first interpreter. (Lightheartedly of course)
The sign for "sorry" is a closed fist making a circle on the chest, for anyone wondering.
Small note but thank you so much for adding the subtitles within the video high up so people needing them in other languages with the cc function on here don't have a hard time reading them overlapping at the bottom!!!
on the desktop website you can actually just click and drag the captions out of the way if youre on a video that doesnt do it for you
@@jay-tblYeah it's just an extra step that I don't think should be necessary on the part of the viewer and I imagine is extra difficult if you're working with a screen reader and limited mobility where you have to have the computer read what each button says before you can click it to make whatever changes. Just a bit of a UX concern, so if the person's able to get rid of the need to do that in the first place, it saves everyone a lot of trouble.
It’s a great tip nontheless
I've interpreted for comedians before and I just don't anymore 😂 One did the very tired/pedestrian "make the interpreter interpret the moans and sighs of this 'orgasm'" and another time a guy at a Leatherman event caught me off guard so bad (this was the 90s, no prep given) and I completely broke. Bad. Folded double laughing if I'm honest but I felt awful and got it together as quickly as I could and the comedian got massive 👏👏 👏 while I died.
I’ve never interpreted stand up but I did interpret for a very funny stage speaker who made me fingerspell Rosalini Tortellini over and over.
Yours is way worse, maybe I won’t take any stand up comedy gigs. 😂
I have no clue how y’all do it!:0 Especially without prep like you mentioned (hopefully it’s gotten better nowadays). I’m a polyglot (which I know it’s not really the same but it’s the closest comparison I have) and I cannot speak another language while someone is speaking, say, english!
Translating jokes seems even harder! Do some jokes just not work at all in sign language? I imagine puns don’t, but were you ever hearing a joke you were signing and was like “okay this one is not gonna land with the deaf/hard of hearing people in the audience” just cause the grammar is so different.
I apologise if this is a lot, I just find it so awesome that interpreting is not only a thing, but that it’s meant to give deaf people the same experience of an event as everyone else with delivery or energy in the case of concerts.
This is so great. Winter sucks but Gianmarco is helping me through this one. And this set is outstanding.
not alone 😂😅😂🎉
"What if I did this for 30 more minutes and said goodnight"
I think everyone would be okay with that.
Haha the whole "caveat to make clear you don't agree with the thing you're signing" is exactly why my mom went through her degree and training and ended up quitting being an interpreter. She didn't want to say all that ugly stuff for other people. lol
God I love comedy shows being interpreted. I wish I knew more ASL but the program and extracurriculars I was in at RIT|NTID was like all hearing men so I never got to much socializing with my fellow dhoh folks
omg I went to RIT! honestly I missed a solid opportunity to learn asl
Never too late to start/keep learning!
I'm a consecutive interpreter so I can't imagine how hard it must be to interpret a _comedy set_ *and* simultaneously, wow. Props to the interpreters!!
this set was INCREDIBLE i am cackling, you worked really well with the interpreters (even if the interactions weren't planned & broke rules, they flowed so well!) (and the interpreters are all so funny too). i laughed so hard! good job everyone!!!
(also TIL more about ASL interpreters through the comments!)
That was incredible. Everyone involved nailed it
Without a doubt; so fun to watch
are you a fluent signer? Just wondering how you know everyone nailed it.
terp was OK.
I get that mostly standup is just a job for you guys, but this looked like a lot of fun. Three genius performances for sure!
I always love looking at the signers. They just convey a lot of emotions.
I have tried simultaneous interpretation twice, and never again. The amount of focus and mental concentration required is insane. The max a person can go without a break is 30 mins. Hence tag-teaming is essential. And of all interpretations, translating humour is the hardest (even when its written). These people are beyond amazing. Hats off from a translator to the amazing interpretors
I'm a court reporter who does some live captioning work, and there's always something so special about getting to work alongside ASL interpreters, because even as I'm writing as close to verbatim as possible, the fact is I can't convey tone and meaning through text. ASL interpreters can. When I've had the chance to ask Deaf clients (mostly I work with late-deafened or hard-of-hearing clients who wouldn't know ASL anyway), many of them like the addition of captions to get what's being said word for word, but no one prefers it over ASL and I completely understand why. I wouldn't either.
An absolute round of applause for the ASL interpretors, being polite, hilarious, and also still doing their job while Gianmarco is talking to them. What great sports. They make this whole thing even funnier.
Im Deaf and this is hilarious fr now I want to go to a comedy show with my interpreter (who is also my brother)
As somebody with a deaf sibling I wish I had your brother’s level of commitment
That was pure chaos to follow! I the interpreters were such good sports about it but I'm really dying to know how much that was prenegotiated before the show, like had it been discussed that you might try to include them in the show or address them as part of the set? I'd love to maybe hear a vlog where you discuss what prompted you to get sign interpreters for this gig!
yes! otherwise I think that was too demanding, like talking to the interpreter even though he could have talked to the deaf person for who they were actually there for
Just got home from seeing this magnificent SOB in Tampa. He absolutely killed the Sunday crowd tonight! Gianmarco, we [Tampa] love you so much, and thanks for the towel! 😂 Please come back to Tampa again soon. Don’t make us wait too long, k? I brought my mom tonight and it was her first time seeing a live stand-up show in decades, and she LOVED it! ❤❤ You’re just amazing, man, honestly. What a great way to start off the new year!
Definitely a bit of a drive for you from Tampa, but I just saw he'll be in Dania June... 21-23, I think? (Dania's on the Atlantic side, near Palm Beach...or maybe Ft. Lauderdale? Either way, it's that general area 😅)
How do they do this without laughing? I wouldn’t accomplish much doubled over in laughter.
Pretty sure the brain is focused on live translating words in a timely matter and in a way that makes sense. Doubt you have much brain-power left to actually take in what is being said haha
I love watching this as a DHH person. There’s always a lot of fear behind interpreters because you don’t wanna interrupt their job and all but these kind of interactions make me very happy
Another hilarious sign language interpreter is Catherine King. She has worked with Australian comedian Adam Hills.
I thought I recognised her from another comedy show but I couldn’t remember whose show it was
second interpreter really caught on to gianmarco's bending-over-after-punchline manneurism
This was the funniest, yet most sincere, little moment.
This is some beautiful comedy. It's got to be so difficult for the interpreters but I can definitely see how it would be seriously difficult for Gianmarco too, as he has to try to avoid looking at or interacting with the person repeating everything you're doing literally 2ft away from you. I bet this throws a huge amount of performers off of their game if they aren't properly used to it. I get that it probably breaks some "rules", but it has caused a pretty unique moment of comedy, well done!
The interpreter was fantastic!!! I’d pay for you two to tour together lmfaooo
Super cool to see a interpreter it should be standard at every type of show. Love the back and fourth. I can't believe the Hitler sign is them mustach and all.
The interpreters here are amazing at playing back and fourth and have a great sense of humor.
I would definitely buy more tickets to comedy shows if there was an ASL interpreter! It'd be great to see you do an interpreted show again!
A Deaf person has a legal right to ask for an interpreter at a comedy show. The interpreters are (usually) only there because a Deaf person requested an interpreter

Never once thought of sign language comedy, and I absolutely love this! Love the representation as well!!
Trevor Noah has a pretty funny bit where he talks about a sign language interpreter who knew only 2-3 signs but somehow ended up interpreting for world leaders in South Africa.
i love watching the sign language interpreters so much, i like seeing how they express the emotions of the words a lot. i’m taiwanese and a lot of taiwanese news all features a sign language interpreter at the bottom of the screen and they always express the emotions of the words vividly, very fascinating to see. i also love that things like this are being translated for hard of hearing people so more people can enjoy it!
I wonder. Because. When you translate verbal languages to other languages, there will always be delay. You will always hear the interpreter struggling for words even if just for milliseconds. Because, interpreting is hard. It's like playing therausus while also keeping grammar in mind. How is it with sign language interpreting. Does the brain process differently? I know there is sign language with grammar of their own and sign language that adopts the verbal language's grammar. Which one is this?
The lady have an excellent comedy timing too, turning towards him hahahaha
I'm always impressed with rap songs being signed but think about how hard it is to sign for a comedian who is known for spontaneous crowd work. That has to be so fuckin difficult
