This is why Christians need to start making games about Christian history.

@RichardCheese-o2m imagine making an open world game where you play Barabas, lock eyes with Christ as the crowd screams for your release and his execution... then have the player choose whether or not to follow Jesus...
If the player makes Barabas a follower of Jesus post crucifixion, he becomes a key figure in sneaking the letters and communication of the early church.
If the player chooses to not follow Jesus, barabas becomes a central leader in the rebellion against Rome that leads to the destruction and annihilation of Jerusalem in 70 AD.
There is incredibly compelling game play behind every aspect of Church history.

@RichardCheese-o2m I think with today's technology there's no particular reason a decently funded studio couldn't go after an open world experience but I have some ideas for pixel art / 2d stuff too, would be less directly "Christian" as most of those ideas would be in a fantasy or science fiction setting, but it would have some Tolkien and Lewis like escapism, eucatastrophe and moral story telling aspects.

The Crusades would be an interesting subject, or the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantium) which was Christian and tried to hold out against a certain religion swept out from the Middle East and destroyed the civilization of Late Antiquity, raiding, plunder and converting by coercion - which plunged the known World into the Dark Ages (this was the cause of the Dark Ages, not the Fall of Rome two centuries earlier where the management changed but the culture and knowledge were mostly left intact).

Someone tweeted at the game's director and asked why all the churches and cathedrals are inaccessible, even though in the first game they were a strong feature.
The director replied that they just didn't have enough time to do it "the right way".
But they had time to make a whole mission about defending a synagogue from evil Christians.

Hi Father, Having no Church to enter in KCD2 is not only Lazy, but also disgusting. The Church was the community center of people in 1403, architectural wonders that people visit from far and wide. Especially the Church in Kuttenberg. You could visit all the churches in KCD1, even the Kickstars got their OWN chapel. Like seriously, what happend to pilgrims and Sunday service? Have a blessed day

@ no mate, that’s not the case to be honest. Even KCD1 had a lot of small churches that you can enter. No cheap excuses please, it’s part of the world they created. Europe during that time was religious, and missing out on a place to worship is very sad to be honest. Even a small chapel would worked. No, they wanted to create a fantasy world without the history and culture part of the place they recreated. It’s sad.

@@johnofbrabant You could enter them yes. But Henry couldn't do much more than enter, maybe donate to the church, maybe give a quick word of prayer and meet the church officials, and move on. One of Henry's last tasks within the game, was sneaking into a church under a fake name to gain info he shouldn't have exactly had, which is also where he happened to meet his first gay person. I'll say the world would feel much more realistic with those elements, something feels off hearing that these things are missing, but I've not played the game, so I can't confirm they do or don't exist. Just realize you were never forced to go into churches a lot outside of stories, besides a dev saying Henry was Christian and the few times he himself had said so.

Which typically meant engaging them in dialogue with fairly long conversations and completing a long, relatively complex sidequest for them that is to their favor.
Modern so-called """""RPGs""""" today don't even have a Faction Reputation system for general groups to like or hate you based on your actions towards them. And completing basic fetch quests give out so many mechanical and material rewards but the character *_writing_* is just bland and shallow.

The game accurately reflects the paradoxes of medieval re-enactment in the Czech Republic and elsewhere in Europe. The reenactor scene is still stuck in the 1990s. Most reenactors are enthusiasts for the material side of medievalism, where they keep improving and their creations look impressive. This, however, also means that the vast majority of reenactors are only technically and craft oriented people. When it comes to the social, political, philosophical and religious side of the Middle Ages, these enthusiasts are mostly semi-educated and content with superficial clichés. Mr. Vávra is a very good example of such a semi-educated enthusiast from the 90s who has fulfilled his dream of a game set in the Middle Ages. As a result, the characters in the game are mostly modern caricatures of "typical medieval characters" and the plots are similarly silly. But despite of this the game is visually very pleasing and entertainig. As to the amount of woke content the game reminds me somewhat of the Robin Hood movie with Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman.

The best 'invention' of the Middle Ages in my opinion is not an item, but 'defenestration' (look it up !) of a corrupt political class :) Development of the Scientific Method in the West was also a game changer - replacing the primacy of axiomatic reasoning from Greek philosophers to the empirical reasoning of 'natural philosophers' (that we now call 'physicists', 'chemists' etc).

Spot on. This will probably be the next strategy for woke: stop with the forced inclusion for a while, and focus on the demonization of the opposite side.
It's not new tho: they did that with christianity in movies from the last 60 years. Those films, novels, games, had much more quality, but the bashing of conservativism, christianity or any traditional value was there, and was FAR MORE EFFECTIVE and smart on their part.
I think they will just return to that for a while. Post 2015 wokeness exposed itself too much and was eventually punished for it (even if they also reached the peak).

In the first game I was always sighing and saying "that's not how you become a Benedictine monk", or "that's not how the Inquisition acts in a backwater village in the middle of nowhere", or "Churches didn't have that at that time", or the priest who is a drunk and has a concubine being a fan of Jan Hus (because of course Jan Hus had to appear somewhere).
In this second game it seems they toned it down a bit. But you can still find phrases like "one can certainly pray without precious ornaments" description on a crucifix item.
The thing is, we are so used to the caricatures and straw-men people make of the Church that I don't see complaints about this. Sure, it's FAR from the caricatures people make of the Church nowadays. But to see such care given in some aspects but then little jabs thrown just for the sake of throwing jabs.

The messages get significantly more blatant in the latter half of the game, I'm thankful to have been spoiled about it. Henry gets a great deal of lecturing by an Islamic fella and several Jews about the barbarity of Christianity and Europe and it's so absurdly on the nose it could be mistaken for satire. I will not put up with a second of it, what a shame.

Well, the result of that "barbarism" was the creation of evangelical churches (Martin Luther...) and christianity getting slightly more liberal/open minded and reformed...
Whereas islam went the exact opposite way, got several "prophets" who turned their views more backwards and extreme resulting in Taliban, Al Quaida and Isis of today.
Similar with certain jewish groups today. Just look at Netanjahu and his political group to see the jewish version of Taliban.

Thank for the review, Father. Despite the encroachment of unnatural and untruthful woke narratives into games the majority of people want to play not only heroes instead of scoundrels, but very morally upright heroes too. For example, in Baldur's Gate 3 the most popular class (apparently by far) was the Paladin - the players not only want to be powerful, they also wanted to to Good (otherwise they could have chosen the morally-neutral Fighter class). The wokesters ('Post Modernists' whose ideology rejects the Christian morality in 'Modernism') are actually massively outnumbered, and they know it. Unfortunately those that are either actively or at least culturally Christian don't seem to realize our huge numerical advantage. Fortunately, political developments are leading to defunding of global propagandists who portray the tiny number of wokesters as more significant in society than the tiny, weird fringe they actually inhabit.

These kind of games invite us to talk about topic of game and differences between world views. Medieval mindset is set apart from our own and hence it really merits some reflection. The developers said they'll be adding churches in later, it's a LOT of work to accurately model the inside of the churches in the region and there are plenty of shrines, a prayer mechanic, even a pilgrimage mechanic. Sexual fluidity was generally a lot less frowned upon in the time period the game was set, it wasn't liked, and if it got in the way (stopped marriages, happened between nobles and so on) it would be suppressed but the homosexuality is actually really sensibly done. I thought they'd have it be very obvious and in your face but it really isn't, it's depicted how it was, out of sight, subtle, and generally intentionally ignored

Playing the game now, I'd say there is more than a fair share of characters who will act nobly and more is hidden behind speech checks, I haven't felt the usual heavy-handed manipulation at least. The features - from greetings to indulgencies (basically an alms box) or pilgrimages - incorporate religion on a surface, observer level, but from what I've seen so far, the general portrayal of these seems to be that of acting in good faith. In Czechia where I'm from, the period is traditionally presented with the official church corrupt (indulgencies, wealth & secular power, martyring Jan Hus) but the resulting reformist movement is integral to the national identity so it's hard to imagine what I see as a patriotic game to go out of its way to paint Christianity as such in a negative light.

Its not really overtly woke as some say (though from my limited play time), and though it portrays alot of darkness as you said, most good deeds in the game are associated with 'being a Christian.' There's even a side-quest I did where reconciling a blood feud the guy says you sound like his priest when you finally convince him to stop. Likewise, the early main villain goes on about his own atheism while torturing and has a gay lover. I have heard it gets worse as the game progresses though, but those are only online rumors.
However, there seems to be much more immorality around every corner and the association of friendship with sexuality I know is in the game even if I haven't seen it. Maybe I missed that in the first, but this is a big step in the same tired old wrong direction for 'modern audiences.'

There are saints cult (almost 150 saints coming to player aid in varius manner and situations), divine favour, mass and confession (these have real meaning), virtue (character "righteness"). And this is beside how other percive player (reputation system). In KCD religious life is only some christian greetings and thats all.

As much as I adore Darklands (I actually have an original big box copy sitting right in front of me on my desk, and to this day consider it in my top 10 games ever made), you can't say it was truly historical. It is heavily historically accurate, but there are also monstrous creatures like hellounds and demons, alchemy is practiced with very similar results and by similar means as in Kingdom Come Deliverance, you fight the dark lord Baphomet, there are endless organized satanic cults hidden all over the place, etc. The game is a masterpiece and as far as historical settings go went to great lengths to represent 15th century Holy Roman Empire far beyond most historical settings games, but it cannot be considered truly historical in the sense a game like Gary Grigsby's War in the East can. It is a historical setting plunged into a manifestation of what was in reality an amalgam of nightmares and confounded cultural artifacts with supernatural legends.

    • @hubertmitura2587
      @hubertmitura2587 2 дні тому +1

@BriteRory every "fantasy" element (alchemy, monsters) in Darklands was carefully placed, based on true grimuary books or early folklore sources. Historians views of witches phenomen or occult were explained by author somewhere in manual or guide book, he just picked up one of such views (as e.g. occultic secret society and antychrist coming to earth , well from time to time some kings or emperors were considered as antichrist- Friderick Barbarossa for instance). Game itself was also meant as history lessons teching help and such fantasy elements should be used in discussion about common mistakes regarding this matter.
Player experienced how very late medieval commoner could see world, natural and unnatural.
So fun mixed with immersion on few floppy discs. And this is historical approach not as KCD where npcs have modern mentality with maybe 1960-1970 Central Europe citizen view of things.

And flops on the face- being Master of Laws myself with master thesis in history law I've wathed KCD DLC quest with "inquisition" court. Everything was wrong and completly ahistorical in this matter. And this was easiest part since courts, especially church courts were very formal back then so written sources are plenty.
No wonder that devs made costume game as historical as "Three musketers" or Ridley Scotts Crusade movie.

@ I don't know that it is much easier to develop a game like War in the East which has detail down to the granular level for nearly every aspect of the war and is known for being one of the most complex video games ever made, but in general I am in agreement with you. My only point is that Darklands is a game of historical fantasy, because the developer made the decision to represent the period as if the beliefs shared by so many people regarding the spiritual and supernatural were actual, material and made manifest. I fully understand why that decision was made and I embrace the game as a masterpiece for it. I am fond of the first Kingdom Come Deliverance game but also do not consider it a historically accurate game, despite featuring many such aspects. It is impossible for us to accurately portray the lives of people who have been dead for centuries, but Kingdom Come Deliverance doesn't try very hard to shed much of the modern perspective, where Darklands did very much so.

@BriteRory War on the East is still limted to one layer (aspect) of reality- modeling armed conflict in particular place and time with definied tools (armies, units). KCD presentation layer (3d game) itself is very demanding and there is also combat, beliveable, spontaneus social interactions, animals...
Its sooo demanding, that devs annunced no childs in game (too difficult to implement in open world game- but not for Ultima IX from 1999). Then we have true historical (non modern, oh noo) realism: there were less children (none of them) than gay and black people in Medieval Bohemia.

Vávra said on a podcast (the one where he name dropped critical drinker and asmongold) why they made the society in this game so brutal and unchristian. It is meant to be edgy because Bohemia is in kind of a dark age during this time period, and he compared it to dark agest that led to the atrocities and moral bankruptcy committed during the hussite wars (that happened about 15 years after KCD2), and the 30 years war, and he even cited a book where he got that from. It is exaggarated, but that is likely to make it not boring, as life would have been if it weren't.

I don't agree with either you or Max, though. The medieval Bohemia portrayed in KCD2 isn't a utopia. But neither is it a dystopia. There's brutality, yes. But there's also humanity - didn't you notice? There's sin aplenty, but there's also faith aplenty. There's no attempt to smooth out rough edges. But amid the crudeness and violence, we also find kindness, friendship and love. It's a frightening world; but it's also, in many ways, an attractive & even beautiful world. Overall, I find it captures quite accurately the political, spiritual and social mores of late medieval Europe. The charge of stealthy, indirect anti-Christian messaging is, to my mind, completely unsubstantiated.

Just to defend KCD2 here, which I've only picked up the series like 2 days ago, homosexuality and gender fluidity wasn't actually particularly frowned upon in Europe until the late 1700's ish. It's one of these bizarre things where people have actually decided that it's bad recently, and started to paint the past like it was some form of crime to commit such actions, which yes, in some cases, it was. But typically, in most parts of Europe for the longest time, as long as you weren't being disruptive and were respectful of others, it wasn't all that bad.
To give you a famous case, Louis XIV's brother was pretty much transgender, though of course, he preferred to be called a man. However he did not act like one, he was flirtatious with men, and wore makeup and jewelry, dressed with luxurious dresses and wore shoes akin to that of modern heels and the such. There were other nobles, a duke of Northern Germany, Saxony area if I remember correctly, who were also widely known to be unconventional in the areas of gender and sexual preference.
I'm not christian, but I do have christian family and what not, I respect the christian point of view but I think it's important to add context.
