Tim Duncan 1999 Finals: 33pts, Gm 1 vs. NY Knicks

  • SAN ANTONIO -- What does New York Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy have to be thinking today?
He fronts Tim Duncan and the San Antonio Spurs play some high-post, low-post offense with power forward David Robinson, who tosses the ball over the New York defender to Duncan for easy scores.
He double-teams Duncan, and his players get into foul trouble. And Duncan scores sometimes anyway.
The Knicks finally play some decent defense on the frontline, and Jaren Jackson lights the Knicks up from outside.
    It's a lose-lose-lose situation.
And playing defense on the Spurs is only half the battle.
No wonder Van Gundy looks like he needs a nice, long vacation.
"The biggest thing they do," Van Gundy said of the Spurs, who took Game 1 in the NBA Finals on Wednesday night with an 89-77 win, "is clog the lane. Every time you penetrate the lane, you have two shot blockers."
Yes, the focus immediately after Game 1 was on the Spurs offense: Duncan's 33 points and 16 rebounds, Robinson's 13 points and seven assists and Jackson's 17 points, including five 3-pointers.
But the slashing, cutting Knicks found that cracking the Spurs' defense is going to be even a tougher challenge than stopping the Spurs' offense in this best-of-seven series.
"We played against three good shot blockers in the first three series," Van Gundy said, talking of Miami's Alonzo Mourning, Atlanta's Dikembe Mutombo and Indiana's Rik Smits. "But never two on the court at the same time. To me, that's a huge difference."
It was, in Game 1, all the difference in the world. The Spurs blocked six shots in the game, but they changed tons more. And they forced some bad decisions once players like Latrell Sprewell, the Knicks speedy scorer, found themselves under the basket and looking up at the Twin Towers, Duncan and Robinson.
Sprewell had six of New York's 15 turnovers.
"We just kind of lost our poise a little bit on the offensive end instead of passing the ball to each other, being a little bit more unselfish and taking the shots that we need to take," Knicks guard Allan Houston said. "And that's really the key for our team at this point."
The Knicks made it this far -- the first No. 8 seed ever to make it to the NBA Finals -- by sending Sprewell and Houston aggressively to the basket. Wednesday, they found out they simply couldn't get there against the Spurs. Or, at least not effectively.
New York scored 36 of its 77 points in the paint. But 16 of them were on fast breaks. And, in the game, they shot only 38.3 percent. In a disastrous second quarter, in which they scored only 10 points, the Knicks shot only 16.7 percent.
"Interior defense has been our anchor," backup forward Malik Rose of the Spurs said, "starting off with Tim Duncan and David Robinson."
It may be the anchor that sinks the Knicks, if van Gundy doesn't come up with something.
"He's one of the best coaches in the league at making adjustments," Spurs guard Steve Kerr said. "They'll do some things differently. It's going to be a long series."

The thing that separates Tim Duncan from all the other great PFs is his defense. Malone, Barkley, Nowitzki, C-Webb, Hayes, etc. doesn't possess the defensive capabilities as Tim Duncan. He was a great post defender, one-on-one defender, as well as a great help defender (which is very rare). Kevin Garnett is the only other PF that comes to mind when matching up defensively with Tim Duncan, but he doesn't have type of offensive game or fundamentals to match up with Timmy.

+oneman9121 Karl Malone was a great defensive player. He had the ability to keep post players from getting good position, was great at stripping the ball and would constantly pull the chair and force turnovers. The difference when comparing him and Duncan is that Tim was a much better rim protector and clutch performer which is why he's a champion and Malone isn't. The Mailman had two chances but he could never come through in the big moments. Missing two straight free throws in Game 1 of the '97 series, not fouling Pippen with 15 seconds to go in Game 5 of that same series when the Jazz were only down by 1 point and, of course, getting stripped by Jordan in Game 6 of the '98 Finals.

+LakersDynasty42 I remember when the Lakers got Malone back in '04 for the sole reason of slowing Tim Duncan. I didn't think much of Malone as a defensive player back then but I think Malone's defense really shined during his '04 playoff stint with the Lakers despite being injured for most of the season.
Yeah I didn't really touch on Malone's 'clutch-less' abilities as I was just kind of skimming over defense. I always found it funny how he's known as the 'Mailman' yet he fails to deliver in the clutch numerous times throughout his career.
That's why after Timmy I'd ponder whether to put Barkley or Malone #2. For all of the issues Barkley had, he was the much better all-around player, and his clutch prowess was on display a lot more (His 1993 playoff run against Spurs/Sonics was amazing)

Griffin is nowhere close to having as complete a game as Timmy demonstrates in this video (which is not even to mention the defensive end). Griffin has very few reliable post moves compared to Duncan's impeccable footwork. Griffin also has a very inconsistent jumper, limited mostly to the elbows and in; Duncan can hit jumpers out to 18 and even 20 feet consistently, has mastered his signature banker, and is one of the NBA's best passing bigs. Blake gets his 20 and 10 but can't compare to TD.

I think this is the only game where the SPURS won comvincingly.. game 2 was close..
But games 4 and 5 are a tooth and nail cliffhanger win for the SPURS
the knicks even won game 3 and gave the SPURS a great series although being manhandled and outplayed by the TWIN TOWERS
just imagine if EWING played there in that series.. it would be much more interesting

he'll surely be better than barkley? don't get carried away, charles barkley was an all around monster. griffin is gonna have to improve every aspect of his game drastically to be as good as barkley, who is the 2nd best power forward of all time (next to timmy of course).

And here we see a perfect example of why it is a good thing to play in college all 4 years. Tim came into the league with a maturity level far beyond the draft classes of today. This was only his 2nd year in the league and he was already playing at an MVP level.

Blake griffin is not even in the conversation of greatest power fowards ever. He cannot do half of these moves that Tim Duncan can do. Griffin is usually out of control in isolation situations. He's really only good for highlights. Tim Duncan is arguably the best power forward ever.

Wonder if those kids who mentions KG, Blake or whoever actually saw what Karl Malone did for 2 decades as dominant, great shooter (from long distance although not 3s to mid range), passer, rebounder, low post and great defender he was. Thats Duncan and Malone and there is the rest. And one more thing: would love to know what Duncan could accomplish in 80s, 90s with that terrible Spurs that Admiral had to carry on his back.

Malone had a legendary PG that helped him score like a freak. Stockton's assists per game is only eclipsed by the great Magic Johnson. Anyways, Dirk has been in the league for 15 whereas Malone had been in the League for 19.
Dirk shot around 24 ppt whereas Malone shot around 24.9 ppg. But Dirk elevates in the playoffs when he shoots for 25.4 ppt against Malone's 24.7. Even though, I usually don't bring this argument how many rings did Malone win? Three tries and came up with zero. Dirk went there twice, and won once, and probably should have won the season the Mavericks went 67-15 in 08. But let me ask you this question? Could Malone ever shoot a jumpshot like Dirk's legendary step back? Haha, Hell no...
Here's my list of the Greatest PF's
      1. Tim Duncan (undisputed GOAT, and top 6 NBA player
      2. Dirk Nowitzki (Greatest Shooter above 6'10 in NBA History)
      3. Malone
      4. Garnett
      5. Barkley

Kareen played with the best point guards in history (Magic and Big O) and he isnt less great than other centers. He is actually best in history. Malone scored 37k not knowing what a 3pt shot was. Thats huge. His longevity is just compared with Kareen and Duncan. 20 years with 20-10-4? Insane. Malone didnt have the step back but had a much faster running break not even guards could catch him.

For me its C Web i think that could transform a mediocre team to a title contender just like Charles . But C Web was a ''u never know what hes goin to do with the ball '' type of a player . Great handles for a big man , terrific passer , great shooter and off course great post up and face up game. Just like Timmy and KG.

Tim Duncan is the best out of all those players u mentioned. And his accomplishments, acolytes, awards speak for themselves. We are talking all around basketball career which includes his college which is one of the best. If u combined it with his Pro career and ain't none of these players touching him. Stats are misleading.. He had the ability to score with the best. He is a team first which already made him a superstar just off his basketball skills and his mentality and the way he approach the game. Let's look at his 🐐 like accomplishments that none of these player's can touch that are as mythical as a unicorn. 😂😂😂 Which means u will never see these accomplishments outdone in your lifetime. 💯 #1) Has a 50+ games won a season for 2 decades straight. (That's 20 yrs of excellence) #2) Has made the playoffs every year since his rookie season to his retirement season. (Has never missed the playoffs) #3) Has a winning percentage against every NBA team in the league in his career. (When Duncan has been on the floor they win more) #4) Has a higher winning percentage then "all sports" in his era.. meaning (He was the Tom Brady and the Spurs the New England Patriots of the NBA 2.0) because he and the Spurs won more.💯 #5) "He is the Overall 🐐 of winning!") That's not only completely accurate but Fact. The only person that has a higher winning ratio is Manu Ginobili. Also a San Antonio Spurs great and team first player. The Spurs were lucky to have these two phenomenal players which are the highest at winning games. That is fact and now you know the reason the Spurs are a true definition of the word dynasty and why they had the highest winning percentage of all sports. I just told you goat like accomplishments that none of those players come close to in that regards. Jordan said it best. Tim Duncan was the best player since MJ. And he got's all the stuff u need to be in that convo.🐐💯✌️
