- Sam Vimes, Commander of City Watch of Ankh-Morpork, must confront his younger self as the Watch faces one of its darkest times. Comical, powerful and pertinent, Commander Vimes tries to impress on Lance Constable Vimes the differences between being a police officer and being a soldier.
Doug Patterson, professor of science-astronomy, presents; Great Books: Night Watch: A Novel of Discworld by Terry Pratchett
This presentation, in the new JCCC CoLab, is part of the fall 2016 Great Books Mini-Lecture Series, which is designed to introduce you to watershed texts that have changed their readers’ views of the world. It’s a series of short talks on great books.
The Great Books series is sponsored by the JCCC English/Journalism Common Read program.

The scene where Vimes orders everyone to build better barricades is one of the best in the series.
A small scene but when a young Nobby is talking to the soldier and the soldier keeps telling him to shut up had me in stitches
Brilliant presentation!
Police officers are still often called 'Bobbies' in the UK, because of Robert Peel. I'd never heard of Peelers before though
The police are sometimes called peelers among other things in Northern Ireland.

Lu Tze's first appearance was actually in Small Gods.
Fantastic presentation otherwise tho'!
I can see that you have read all the books! I enjoyed hearing your lecture. I found the ...aaahhhs ah ahhh …. hard to listen to. These books have much wisdom in them I agree.
Thank you.
22:00 or more importantly magical energy is just that energy it has mass and as such when confined into something like a book it has ...gravity and as such a large library has a lot of ..mass .. and as such has a tendency to... warp space and time around it in the way a real black hole does ...
The apogee of the Discworld run, in my view...
You seem like a great professor.
