History of Goa’s Electoral Evolution | GT Framed Narratives | Election 2024 | Gomantak Times

Goa, a land steeped in history and democracy, has traversed a remarkable electoral evolution. Electoral processes in Portuguese Goa commenced in 1821, lasting until 1961 when it joined the Indian Union.
Goans back then participated in Portuguese parliamentary elections. However, in 1987, Goa became a full-fledged state within India, gaining the right to participate in national elections. Its first opportunity arose in 1963, with Dr Pundalik Gaitonde and Dr Antonio Colaco being nominated for parliamentary constituencies.
Fast forward to 2024, Goa gears up for another round of election, the Lok Sabha election. With a total electorate of 11,79,344, comprising 5,71,617 male, 6,07,715 female, and 12 third-gender electors, Goa boasts over 1725 polling stations.
Among the 8 Lok Sabha candidates are notable names like Pallavi Srinivas Dempo (BJP), Captain Viriato Fernandes (Indian National Congress), and Rubert Pereira (Revolutionary Party) for south Goa, while Tukaram Bharat Parab (Revolutionary Goans), Ramakant Khalp (Indian National Congress), and Shripad Naik (BJP) are some notable candidates.
Notably, Vasco Da Gama records the highest number of electors at 35,887, followed by Canacona, Poriem, and Quepem.
