This is PART 3 of an ongoing series. In this video we do a complete overhaul of the glow plug system, including replacing the glow plugs, glow plug relay, and deleting a faulty glow plug controller by using a bypass switch.

Hey. Loving your videos so far. Ford technician here. I daily an 83 6.9 idi duelly 4 speed. Your truck firing off then dieing is air intrusion. Get you a fuel return line kit, youll know you have it repaired if you can start your truck after a cold soak in the morning. If she starts and idles, your good. If she starts snd dies then restarts after a mess of cranking. Youll have to start replacement of the olive seals in the filter head fittings

The message boards are full of stories of stuck plugs. How do you think auto lite got the reputation it did?

I seem to remember the previous owner saying these were relatively new too, a couple were definitely pretty nasty!

Nice job. I am about to purchase an 86 with the idi and I am not sure if the glow plugs work because the light on the dash does not light up. This series of videos has really helped me understand how these work. I look forward to part 4

Hot probe or ohm glow plug to test

The Wait To Start light is dependent on the Temp sensor effectively shorting when coolant is cold. You can unplug leads to this and simply short them to test that light function. If the light lites then replace that sensor for starters.

yep lot those on6.2 6.5 even 5.9 lot eltronic componets get old premature heat venting for air was big problem towing

I think the vent controls are screwed up in this truck too. Or full of rats nests! Haha. Surprisingly, the radio works and sounds great and the clock still tells the right time though! 😂
