- Panama ranks as one of the world's top birdwatching spots in the world, but you'd be surprised how many rare mammals also thrive in its forests. And there's nothing quite like seeing everything at eye-level.

ABOUT THIS FILM
____________________
Canopy Tower
I was invited by the owners of Canopy Tower (canopytower.com/) to stay in their remarkable tree-top hotel to see the wildlife that abounds there. Converted from a former military radar tower overlooking the Panama Canal, it is one of the best places from which to enjoy the mesmerising number of species that Panama has to offer.
Wildlife at eye-level
You don't even have to leave the hotel to find a myriad of brightly-coloured species or enjoy the wealth of wildlife this tropical isthmus has to offer. You can watch sloths dangling from the highest branches, soft-eyed mantled howler monkeys, brown-hooded parrots allopreening, and even the stunning squirrel cuckoo!
Rare sightings
But a 10-minute walk down hill from the hotel and I was treated to a very rare sight: Sylvia's leaf frogs. Even my guide Eliecer had only seen these jewel coloured frogs in one other place in Panama! And later, on a drive through the forest, we spot something unique. A erythristic northern tamandua. This pale-coated, arboreal anteater could well be one of a kind and we got to watch it snooze in the treetops, escaped ants from its latest meal still scarpering over its face!
Wildlife in the treetops
You don't need to spot rare creatures to feel like you've entered a new world in Panama. Here everything seems exotic - check out the chattering Geoffroy's tamarin - and so much of wildlife lives in the trees. Even the porcupines - Rothschild's porcupine - can climb.
Birds
From double-toothed kites, to masked tityras, broad-billed motmots, yellow fulvous-vented euphonias, golden-hooded tanagers, blue crowned manakins, and black breasted puff birds (even the names are a joy), there's no surprising that Panama has a reputation as one of the best bird-watching destinations in the world.
Mammals
And on the forest floor there is more to spot. The white-nosed coatis walked like cartoon characters and the brilliant coats of green iguana's glisten.
Coming soon
I'll be putting together a film all about my wildlife experiences in Panama and showing you what I learned about the incredible species I saw there. Look out for it in the new year.

hey m8, ever seen crows playing with wild wolf pups? it may be that thuasands of years before we domesticated dogs, corvids were playing fetch with ancient wolfs... a study found that most wolfs have an instinct to play the game fetch... they didint learn it from us. ^^ crazy how deep animal relations go. no telling what they will learn from us in another thuasand years.
Wow, what a abundance of wildlife in Panama 🇵🇦.
The colours of the animals are so gorgeous and mind-blowing beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing this treasure with us, Robert.

What an amazing footage of the Sylvias leaf frogs! Catching them with their eggs! so lucky
Yes I don’t think they have been filmed before spawning in daylight they are incredibly rare and normally lay eggs at night My friend discovered they were a different species to the Splendid tree frog and named them after his Granddaughter so it was quite incredible to actually see them
@@RobertEFuller I have learned so much from your films 🤗
Costa Rica is a place I fully enjoyed, so much wildlife.....in this film of Robert's there are a couple I didn't see, thank you.
Such beautiful extraordinary creations. There is always something to learn about them even if they are of a common species such as an American Robin. I never get bored even watching the simplest creature.

Oh my gosh a tamandua, one of my favorite animals! And an erythristic one at that! You're sooo lucky Robert! 💗
There has been only 2 erythristic tamanduas recorded and I might be the the first person to get such good quality footage of one of them So very special sighting
Absolutely stunning! Keep up the good work!❤
Oh thanks glad you enjoyed the video there is plenty more to come in 2023

NatGeo posted today, as well.

⚘ ❤🙏❤ ⚘
P.S. Sloths (3- and 4-fingered) are my favorite animals.
Glad you enjoyed the video and happy new years too We have plenty more to come for Panama including more sloths 🦥
This adventure is more than one could ever state in words. I could see the amazement and thrill in your voice, keen eyesight and lively musical score at the abundance of unique wildlife. Tropical 💚🤎💙zones seems to always display a bounty of beautiful wildlife. The Sylvia's Leap 🐸Frog footage is one of my favorite species. I don't think that I could have slept for fear of loosing just one minute to view so many various wildlife. More will come, thanks to your dedication. 👏
Well yes what a amazing adventure it was and we didn’t miss a moment up before 5am each morning and filming every day unless the weather stopped us The Sylvia’s Leaf Frogs 🐸 were very special very rare and mostly nocturnal. We might well be the only people in the world to have filmed them spawning in daylight. The frogs will be a great film as my friend Andrew Gray discovered these were a separate species and named them after his granddaughter Sylvia 🐸 there is plenty more to come 🦜🦥 for sure!
@@RobertEFuller It's always wonderful to know history of a species💯❤💫🐸. I do appreciate everything that your team, family and you do everyday. Bless all. Yes, i am ready for more Panama! Thank you for your time and reply. 👋
I want to be always beside you ❤❤❤

Thanks 🦜🦥🐸
Very cool pictures and videos. We were there with Eli a couple of weeks ago. He's an amazing birder!
Oh glad you enjoyed your time there yes Eli is a great guy
Incredible footage. What a beautiful place! Thanks for bringing me along on such a wonderful experience. Would you mind sharing what canera/video equipment you use?
Panama is amazing, I had a great trip. I shoot on Sony A1's!
@@RobertEFuller Amazing...thank you!
Did not know there were tree-dwelling species of porcupines. World's full of surprises if you go looking for them.
I knew about them but didn’t expect one to be so high up in the canopy. Amazing!
Wonderful, thanks! I really appreciate the animal identifications as well. I wonder if you know if the Puff bird and the motmot are fishers? But they both have large bills that remind me of kingfishers.
They are not related to kingfishers but they are so beautiful
Mr. Fuller, awesome footage! 😮
Glad you enjoyed it!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
did not know there were such a thing as arborial porcupines... man, wouldint want that falling on me... need some armor out there oh yeah, it rare but sometimes porcupines and hedghogs too, are born without spines... looks super weird.
The Porcupine was amazing I had seen one on tv but never in real life and seeing it so high up in the canopy was really impressive
@@RobertEFuller remarkable adaptation, it honestly suprizes me its so rare in nature, maybe its hard to develop the spines in the first place... kind of like how venom is costly to make for insects and snakes.
This felt like that video game Pokemon Snap! lol... so many interesting creatures just doing their thing. The frogs and their eggs was beautiful. Do they lay them on like a stem or something by the water?
Wildlife Pokémon from Panama 🇵🇦😆
The Sylvia’s Tree Frog is extremely rare we might be the first team to film them spawning especially in daylight as they are usually nocturnal creatures living in the trees So they lay eggs above water on leaf’s and branches and as they hatch they drop into the water Watch out for there film 🐸 coming in a couple of months My friend Andrew Grey classified them as a separate species and named them after his granddaughter
Another great video Mr. Fuller! What a beautiful place. Thanks for bringing us along.
Also, i tried to find video of Harpy eagle and i can't find it. UA-cams search feature definitely needs improvement.
Thanks we are going to do a full video on Harpy Eagles but we have them in this film also from Panama Called
Wildlife Paradise in Panama’s Darien Rainforest
Hope you enjoy it too

Didn’t know porcupines could climb trees. I thought they were just big hedgehogs 🤣🤣
Yes I new about this species but never seen one But it gave me a surprise seeing one so high up right up in the canopy
Hi Robert do you have any updates on Dawn & Dusk?
The full story of their year is coming out soon! But the tawny owl adults Bomber and Luna push all the young owls out of their territory in the autumn (fall) 🍂
@@RobertEFuller Thanks Robert! Looking forward to it 👍

Splendid photography, as always. But could be so much better without the mindless music chugging away.
