- By contrast, for Shia Muslims, Ashura is a day of mourning as they annually commemorate the death of Husayn ibn Ali, grandson of the Islamic prophet Muhammad and the third Shia imam. Husayn refused on moral grounds to pledge his allegiance to the Umayyad caliph Yazid ibn Mu'awiya (r. 680-683) and was subsequently killed, alongside most of his male relatives and his small retinue, by the Umayyad army in the Battle of Karbala on Ashura 61 AH (680 CE). Among the Shia, mourning for Husayn is viewed as an act of protest against oppression, a struggle for God, and a means of securing the intercession of Husayn in the afterlife. Ashura is observed through mourning gatherings, processions, and dramatic reenactments. In such ceremonies, Shia mourners strike their chests to share in the pain of Husayn. Extreme self-flagellation, often involving self-inflicted bloodshed, remains controversial among the Shia, condemned by many Shia clerics, and outlawed in some Shia communities. Ashura has sometimes been an occasion for sectarian violence, particularly against the Shia minority.

After the death of the holy Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his holy progeny), Muslims have two options for seeking guidance from; the holy ahlulbayt (family) of the holy Prophet. Others.
The ahlulbayt are those family members of the holy Prophet who grew up in his blessed lap. Islam, Qur'an and the shari'ah were revealed in their house. The angels descended with the blessings, mercy and salutations from Allah into their house. Muslims are obligated to send blessings upon their holy Prophet and his holy progeny in their namaz/salat. Allah testifies of their purity, cleanliness, infallibility, sinlessness and perfection in the holy Qur'an. The holy Prophet left behind him the Book of Allah, the holy Qur'an and his holy progeny. They are the best examples and role models after the holy Prophet. They are the heirs of the holy Prophet's knowledge, wisdom and characteristics. They are the flesh and blood of the holy Prophet. The holy Prophet loved them the most and they loved him the most.
Who can understand Islam, Qur'an, shari'ah, the sunnah of the holy Prophet better than the people of the house?
As regards the others, we are not sure of the state of their Iman, source of their knowledge, information, understanding and guidance about Islam.
Study the biographies of personalities like the holy Prophet Muhammad, his beloved daughter Fatima, her husband Ali and their sons Hasan and Husain (peace and blessings of Allah be upon them all).
Look into the authentic history of Islam, especially events such as:-
Da'wat-e-Zul Ashira
Mubahila
Ghadir-e-Khum
Saqifa
Fadak
The death of Abuzar Ghaffari
The death of Muhammad bin Abi Bakr
The death of Malik bin Nuweira
The battle of Jamal
The battle of Siffin
