Designing layout is one of my most favorite things with renovating.. really enjoying this project!! Also, I really am enjoying your new channel “ Launch Pad” its been my new podcast for my work commute. 👍👍
Thanks, man, enjoy your renovation as well, for those not familiar, check it out...bigger better house, bigger family, better workmanship. Both of your guys channels are great how to get things done... Or should I say started... and working through all the challenges, and your guys are doing the work all by yourself! Not only are you teaching yourself but you are also teaching your viewers how to figure things out. Thanks for sharing!
@@Alan.Moffat Yeah, I too was once young and invincible, so I understand it, but all it takes is one tiny bit of flying metal and your life is changed forever. Let's hope discretion catches up before luck runs out!
@Boss Günter This! Eye damage is acute and often heals completely, but hearing damage is cumulative over a lifetime. You may not even notice until it's too late.
This book is Awesome! I love the Lean-To-Shed the most (page 98). The plan ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxe9yi0sulKgsp0VJJCIrLWWkvVqcU7LFR is to attach it to the back of my brick house. I also like how they walk you through the many different steps of construction, which is important for the less experienced like me.

I have a bad habit of underestimating my intentions. I think it's the only way to start big stuff, if you totally admitted the amount of effort that was about to be dispensed...you might not get started.
Homemade Home I was actually so inspired by this inadvertent advice because I ALWAYS try to pre-plan everything to the extent that it IS discouraging and counterproductive. Unless you’re planning a work of civic engineering, underestimating makes a lot of sense! (As long as you can go the distance once reality sets in I guess...)
That is one of the things I like most about this guy..... He makes initial plans but then is never hesitant to change direction mid-strude and do it differently than he originally planned. It is called flexibility and being able to look at things in big picture mode. Good stuff.....
I saw the sag right away in the new wall and I was thinking "oh boy", I would have started freaking out right there. You have ice water running through your veins, you're fearless, so you jack it up with a floor jack, no big issue. I can't wait until the next episode, thank you.
There is a lot you need to know to remodel a house. Removing the wrong beam or cutting through the wrong stud or removing the wrong wall could compromise the entire structure of the house. You also need to be licensed for any electrical plumbing or other work you do. On top of that, if you don't have the right permits the government can come back and make you tear out everything you have done. On top of that, if you buy a house to renovate and they made any unpermitted additions, they government can make you tear out all of that too. In addition, if any changes you make that cause structural problems that injure someone who buys the house from you, you become legally liable for that too.
I haven't heard "jack-legged" since my father was alive and he was old the day I was born LOL. The good slang never truly dies. Good progress on the house.
When you said "if I'd knocked a hole through that wall" the look on your face was priceless. I just about died laughing. Having done jobs with multiple components and crews before, I pretty much know how you felt. I found myself getting totally confused. Sometimes I'd go for a short walk to clear my head. Great video as usual!
I like the way how you are gently and carefully thinking, analyzing, planing and reconstructing. You should be proud of yourself specially about how safely you are working
One thing that will help you with all that drywall dust is get yourself a couple of exhaust fans and place one pulling air in and the other exhausting air out. You can also "filter" the air by buying a couple of hvac furnace filters and taping them to the back of each fan. That way you will have a constant flow of fresh air into the house. You can also take a cheap spray bottle filled with water and wet the drywall where you are going to cut it and that will help keep the drywall dust down. Keep up the good work!
Yes I did the trick with the furnace filters on the back of a fan and placed it in the basement. It totally cleared the are of dust and helped to keep the moisture/mildew in check. I just let it run day and night for a few days.
Yeah, stuff like the exterior even hits "pros". My wife and I bought a rent house, and hired a remodeling company to do most of the work. There was a good-sized laundry room with a 30x68 exterior door opening into the back yard, but the old door was shot and most of the drywall was also torn up. The remodeling crew chief suggested that we wall that off to save money. I stupidly okayed it. BUT - the interior door was a 24x68, meaning you can't get a washer or dryer into it. In the meantime, the house got leased, so I had one weekend to go and strip siding, cut out the drywall on the inside, and install a new exterior door then get it trimmed and painted before the tenants arrived. Got it done, but it was a close call.
I'm watching your video, and I felt ministry in your voice... Then saw your hands, and felt the Anointing of God... You have a truly sweet soul young man. God is calling on you to minister. Go forth and let God use you... 🙏
Watching you with that sledge is proof "They don't build houses like they used to." A modern wall would have been dust in just a few swings. This is video educational GOLD for anyone thinking about renovations. Thanks and keep up your spirits!
I really do wish I could assist in floor plans and kitchen redesign with you. This would be a highlight in my life - I would never sleep until complete.
SO satisfying tearing down a wall, and rebuilding a new one. Like others said, kudos on the respirator, but PLEASE wear safety goggles and ear protection too, a good pair of glasses don't feel like you are wearing anything...and it takes just seconds to put in those foam earplugs. It won't be fun if you can't SEE the fruits of your labor, or HEAR the compliments on your work! loving your channels!
I love your channels and your videos. One thing I admire about you is that you've amassed so much experience building and rebuilding houses that you no longer see houses as a "home" - unchanging and full of memories and restrictions. You see houses for what they are: a collection of LEGO-like building blocks that can be replaced and reconfigured, and you've got the skills to make it happen. The possibilities are nearly endless. I think you mentioned this in one of your recent videos.
Yeah, addition after addition. Basically started out as a one room downstairs, one room upstairs house, then a kitchen added (the dining room) and later the current kitchen. Built something they could afford and then added on as needed. I think it's a lot better way than how many go about it.
This might be a different kind of comment, I really liked the choice of music for this video. It fits the quirky fun you we see every now and then :) Made the video happier and funner to watch than usual. I love your videos, I could never do this type of work but I truly do love watching
Ditto on the other's PPE recommendations. Would suck to see you w/ an eyepatch. AND I got a new line: "Measure twice, cut once, pop your head through!" Lol. Thanks!
I thought that too. The other bedroom had its ceiling raised with some areas of the ceiling being slanted with the roofline. I think it looks fine like that.
Not only that but he's talking about Distributing the load but then he puts up a wall that isn't even a load-bearing wall he just kind of scab something in there. You need to top plates on top of the studs
Dude, I like your style. I only found your channel yesterday, and I like what I see. You have skills and strength and knowledge and clearly you are not afraid of hard work.
Love your videos, but your lack of eye protection in all of them really worries me. As someone who has gotten rust in their eye and had to have the Dr. cut it out, let me tell you, you would much rather not have to deal with that. For me it was a little fleck off some old plumbing, but with all this demo there's so much that can get in your eyes. Please consider using eye protection more regularly.
Punching a hole in the wall and screaming "OH YEAHH" during demolition is a valid reason to purchase an investment property... and a packet of Kool-aid.
A lot to be said about making things true to each other in an old house. My old place had nothing square like that settling and sags every room. Nothing I did for repairs or upgrades could be level because it would look terrible but making it true to the existing like that ceiling makes it look great. Good job with it. Love watching your stuff

A couple years ago I bought a cute little house to renovate on my own in upstate, NY for $4,000 but unfortunately vandals broke in and lit it on fire before I got to do anything (or get fire insurance :/). Thankfully it's in a major city so the land it was on still has value. The next place I buy I'm going to get fire insurance on it ASAP.
Here's just a thought - that remodeled bathroom - have you considered switching the vanity for the toilet? It would put the toilet out view from both bedrooms if their doors were open - maybe reverse the swing (hinge side) of the back bedroom bathroom door, it would hide the toilet even better.. It would also put your sink closer to its linens in the new closet. Great work, man!

That ceiling sag at one end could have easily been fixed by putting in a shim to level it before you tacked in the 2nd 2x4. But that's only if you didn't want to build an entire new wall! I lived in an old farm house for many years & learned a lot about how to fix things like that on a budget!
Keep up the great work!. It's cool to see your process and ideas. I know that I'd be proud to own a house you had rebuilt because I would know it was done right!. Good luck on future projects and thanks for sharing the journey with us. 🙏🍻

Wow im totally hooked...omg I can’t wait to see your next video(and the next and the next)you are so awesome!!!
That ceiling sag at one end could have easily been fixed by putting in a shim to level it before you tacked in the 2nd 2x4. But that's only if you didn't want to build an entire new wall! I lived in an old farm house for many years & learned a lot about how to fix things like that on a budget!
If you did two sinks in the bathroom each bedroom can have it's own. lol I don't like sharing my sink. lol Keep going! Your hard work always pays off!
Keep up the great work!. It's cool to see your process and ideas. I know that I'd be proud to own a house you had rebuilt because I would know it was done right!. Good luck on future projects and thanks for sharing the journey with us. 🙏🍻
