  • Alex reflects on his personal journey, shedding light on the mental health challenges he encountered during his tenure in journalism. Commencing his career at the age of 23, his initial enthusiasm for full-time writing was tempered by the relentless demands of the industry. The pressure to consistently chase news stories and conform to mainstream expectations took a toll on his mental well-being.
Being one of the few Black individuals in longstanding journalistic institutions added an extra layer of complexity. Alex navigated the negativity of news reporting, coupled with the distinct challenges of representation in a field rooted in tradition.
Beyond the professional sphere, Alex delves into the loneliness that characterised his personal life. Returning to the UK after a year of teaching abroad, he found himself without a social circle, struggling to rekindle old friendships and form new connections. This void in companionship became a significant source of stress, exacerbating his challenges.
The culmination of workplace pressures, social isolation, and the adjustment to being back home resulted in burnout. Alex found himself investing more hours at work to avoid the loneliness at home, leading to a superficial nature in some of his friendships.
The breaking point arrived with a series of panic attacks at work, prompting a reassessment of his priorities. Despite the difficulty of leaving the journalism industry, Alex prioritised his mental health and embarked on a journey of self-discovery.
In this video, Alex shares his story in the hopes of breaking the taboo around discussing mental health, particularly among men. By fostering open conversations, he aims to encourage others facing similar struggles to seek help and support.
