Q Do you realize how hard transmitting digital information wirelessly was just twenty years ago? Seriously when was the last time you saw a cellphone with an antenna? Or a TV with one for that matter? Time trivializes difficulty.
You've got a point. If it's programmable, then a hacker could take control of your clay. While you're asleep on a claytronic bed, for a "Joke" he has the bed swallow you up and smother you. Oops. Or you just have a cantankerous kid, who tells your coffee cup to spring a leak while you're drinking. Or if the coffee cup could change into a gun and shoot you as you're drinking. Or somebody makes a pretty girl's claytronic clothing disappear. Or not even malicious people. What if the claytronic's power source dies out unexpectedly, so your stops working unexpectedly. Or it malfunctions and transforms unexpectedly. Or the claytronic science project you've been working on for your thesis disappears when your roommate cleans the room and all the clay is recycled. Accidents happen...
@@mike_williams Good points but anyone who would wear claytronic clothing would be an idiot unless the catoms were programmed to be used with only one specific programming device (e.g. your catoms would only respond to your phone giving it commands).
@@lookupyourredemptiondrawsn7285 on the bright side, I think the final outcome will be really good (see: Star Trek) or really bad (ka boom). And we know what the bad outcome looks like, so we can do something about it.
Imagine a whole household made of programmable matter, as well as everything in it. If you ever needed to clean a room, you could simply melt it down into the floor and return it back to where it belongs. You could even melt furnishings and create more room in your house. Programmable matter could possibly become the most useful invention. That is, if we ever conduct enough research to develop it. Lets just hope!
This technology would unleash personal customization we could only dream off.. Imagine having a apartment living alone and working home and make your entire living room into a hightech office or a big bedroom etc etc.. Omg the potential..
I actually know how to make it happen. The main limitation always was the lack of scalable parallel model of computation. I was trying to invent one for the past 30 years. A few months ago came up with a working idea finally. Stay tuned.
Programmable matter has incredible potential for the distant future, assuming it will one day be able to mimic various properties of matter. Imagine a world where entire cities and highways are constructed from this stuff. A common news headline would be something like "Time Square To Receive New Update This Evening, v13.0.0.1".
Probably it would be still much cheaper to use traditional materials. And I don't think this type of technology could ever perfectly mimic the properties of all matters. I would say it would be more useful for applications, where constantly changing shape is helpful.

Child toys: Little children want new toys all the time, then just lose interest as soon as they get them and throw them away. Having programmable matter taking the shape of different toys all the time would solve that problem.
i love the thought of this stuff, literally the ultimate 'lego' so to speak, personally i would probably use it for testing designs, and otherwise just as a convenience item (I.E. oh no my door broke, i'll just make a new one) this has so many potential uses, i'm personally interested in seeing if it might be possible to develop different kinds with different capabilities, i.e. one that conducts heat/electricity, one that reflects light and heat, and one that acts as a general building block, so many possibilities
Hierarchy of functions is the main building block of our civilization. Guess these catoms won't be the only building blocks, but those parts which they will produce. Catoms enable 3D scanning and 3D printing on really _atomic_ level, so everything will become possible. Quite soon. Stay tuned.
I had a dream last night about programmable matter. In the dream, I received a gift, it was a sculpture all white about 12 inches tall and every so often, it would reassemble into a completely different sculpture, it was absolutely wild!

Then exit the body and reform with the rest of the claytronic substance and become a rug on the floor. Under the dead body. What would I build? Maybe when my car breaks down, I would have claytronics transform into the replacement part I need on vehicle, change out the defunct part then be off on my merry way.
Not sure. What if the some or all of the claytronics that makes the car fail? Or if the claytronics is hijacked and hacked by someone? You have a valid point though; would be nice for an all claytronic car or vehicle (airplane or boat).
Once this stuff is available to just go out and buy, I'd create the ultimate bed/bean bag/walking chair. I could sleep in my bed, sit in a comfy beanbag, and stay seated while my chair walks up and downstairs. I could make mannequins to practice fashion designing with! I could create all the toys my parakeet could ever want! I could make the best and most accurate cosplays ever. I could FaceTime my friend and have a mini, physical version of her in front of me as we spoke (which would be very helpful in 2020)! I could make my own ice skates! Better yet, I could make a personal ice rink at my apartment complex! I can't wait for this stuff! I just hope you can buy it by the pound or something. I'd hate to have to buy them individually.
I LOVE your question! If we had programable matter there are literally endless possibilities! I think the first thing I would make would be a model of Voyager!(star trek voyager) then I might make a hobbit house. My sister would make a treehouse. My brother would make his room into a 2 story room. By adding another layer onto the top of his room.
How would claytronic items compare to the conventional ones- like, what would be their physical properties- tensile strength, heat resistance, etc. You may not want to make certain things, such as a claytronic hammer, screwdriver or saw, or cup, because they are not made of individual atoms, they are made of mini computer spheres, which can be damaged more easily. Or, what about a claytronic shirt, blanket, compared to a silk, cotton, or wool one?

No wars, no borders any more, no terrorists, no crazy politicians. Just a peaceful life controlled by programmable matter. And you know what? I suggest you to read the book of Stanislav Lem "Observation on the spot", this concept was well described already in 60ies of the last century.
Yep. Plus the telepresence will automatically monitor any attempts of one human to kill another human remotely, and blocking those. Together with forever blocking the access to the technology. Censorship of the future. Which is actually just about to come!
but i have a question, like u said that we can fax a 3d thing for one side to somewhere else.then how would u know which one is real as the thing will have copied the original to the very fine detail, and u can say we can try to dismantle them then what if the original was also made from that "sand".looking forward for a reply.
Even without the ability to reassemble into an object, this technology could still have some amazing applications: For instance, it could lead to an alternate (and possibly quite superior) method of 3D modeling. Instead of bouncing waves of sound or light off the subject and trying to recreate it by scanning (which I imagine has issues with "shadowing" errors on irregularly shaped objects), you flow catoms around every nook and crevice, much like a fluid going into a mold. Then a wireless server controlling the catoms would have access to super high-precision shape information that could be used as a master for 3D modelling of unprecedented accuracy. Combined with 3D printing, which we already have, this could be pretty important to making objects where a high degree of faithfulness to the original is essential (replacement parts, precision machinery, archeological artifact study, etc).
A type of "3-D printed" Programmable Matter could be the basis for digital "people" and vehicles, etc from the digital world of "TRON: ARES" appearing in the "real world".
small question what does allow me to create any electronical device that comes into my imagination if there was such thing? or would that be too difficult for that? if we had the technology to do so
Instead of the chair, cup thing you said in the video, you can just say 'transformers could be real soon' in 1 single sentence, I think you will get much much more thumbs up.
there was a small series written by Wil McCarthy starting with the book "The Collapsium" that was based on a similar idea of programmable matter and faxable matter. it has been to date my favorite science fiction novel on the subject and is based off of real quantum effects experiments with pseudo-atoms, FWthinking, and anyone else interested, should really look into the series
looks like object oriented programming just took a whole new meaning, i would love to weaponize it XD, more than likely i would have it swarm around me and respond to my gestures. may use it to scale large buildings or prevent me from falling to my death would be pretty useful.

ok now this excites me! and if i had my own vat of claytronics i would want a headset along the lines of big hero six because that would simply be amazing!
I would build space explorations devices on a space station to go out and visit different places to then reports back to earth. It could mold into whatever it needed to be at any given time. As for computerized intelligence, batteries and heat shields; perhaps it could carry these within itself and fit them in different places depending on the job it needed to complete. When in our physical presence, it could resemble man, when traveling close to a star it might resemble a space shuttle. On a quasi-habitat category planet it might resemble a '49er. At times it might resemble inspector Gadget even.
this technology reminds me of telekinetic powers moving and reshaping earth and water. Imagine having that same power through the application of this technology. But you would only be able to make the matter float if you arranged the matter into a bunch of machines that could make it fly.
How would claytronic tools compare to traditional ones. Say a claytronic hammer made of catoms (small computers) vs just an ordinary one made of steel?
@@trevorcolburn2384 weight can be emulated by reactive air streams. Strength? They will be made out of titanium. But the point is, in the trunk of your car you don't have the entire factory which has built the car, right? It will make the car super big and ridiculously expensive. The same with claytronics. Parts can be manufactured and transported around, but the parts themselves don't have to be made out of catoms.
i think the first application would be for makeshift buildings, maybe in space or on other planets. larger catoms would be adequate for making buildings.
So Carnegie Mellon nearly has the microbots from Big Hero 6... Awesome! Building things from microbots will also diminish waste. If something breaks just replace the microbots, _and_ people can have almost whatever they want if they have enough microbots.
it has to be circle to move 3 dimention. try it big first then smaller and smaller to create as small as a sand and it has to be a controler or create a helmet that makes it move like in the big hero 6
Imagine yourself playing a video game where you get mauled to death by a bear. Now imagine the bear mauling you to death by sticking it's jaw and paws out of your screen!
I would Imagine that Faxing your body would hurt a lot. I mean, your literally being torn apart at the molecular level and then being reconstructed piece by piece until your whole again.
First thing I'd make with it? Money. xD Okay, more seriously though... I'd likely attempt to start up dirt-cheap manufacturing of day to day objects, which would cost less because the people involved in production would be less, and the supplies would be less varied and consumer-available. Consumers could technically make their own things, which is great, though I think the cost investment to get in on this early would be fairly hefty. So "if" you can slip in before it becomes really easy to get the technology to do it, I could see it being a pretty effective way to start up a business. All you'd need is putty, and artistic knowledge as well as ergonomic knowledge. Even if using this to start up a business is absurd due to quick consumer accessibility, it'd still be great to have. Rather than buying, say, cups I could just make my own. Which is brilliant because I'm terribly picky with what I drink my tea (Earl Grey. Hot.) in. I imagine this is the kind of thing which will sweep the market in much the same way as 3D printing is currently; putting the means of production back into the hands of everyday consumers is a huge step in the right direction when it comes to monopoly prevention. Of course, there's obviously the question of getting yourself a gun out of the putty, but when it really boils down to it, with something that complex (if you want the gun to actually be any good) the time and resources to produce it would likely factor out to be more than the money you'd need to spend to just buy one. Initially, anyways. I'm sure it'd become something worth serious attention eventually.
Instead of putting that chair you just "built" back into a vat for storage, why transform the chair back into a thing you use when you're alone at home? For example, your bathtub could transform into an extra chair, when needed. A philips screwdriver --> flat head screwdriver. This saves a lot of space because objects in your home are multi-purpose.
I'd create claytronic wings and make them fly me places. Or I'd have claytronic Dr. Ocktupus (I know it's wrong) arms then I could eat 4 tacos whilst binge watching shows on Netflix. Or maybe an electric claytronic fist of death and blow everything away with one punch. Or maybe a claytronic batsuit that augments all of your somatic, physical, and cerebral abilities. Thank humans for technology.
everybody with a vat of programmable goo; gaming characters entering your home via your tele-entertainment portal; the ability to transport yourself into a neighbor's living space...what could possibly go wrong.
I wonder if it'll be able to create life? Or at least replicate it? Cuz he did talk about that maybe he can create an image of his own/fax himself to give someone a hug or a handshake. So does that mean, it can make individual decisions even if its not really you? can that make clones too? its just really fascinating to think about it.

but i have a question, like u said that we can fax a 3d thing for one side to somewhere else.then how would u know which one is real as the thing will have copied the original to the very fine detail, and u can say we can try to dismantle them then what if the original was also made from that "sand".looking forward for a reply.
*This guy predicted spiderman miles morales*
A type of "3-D printed" Programmable Matter could be the basis for digital "people" and vehicles, etc from the digital world of "TRON: ARES" appearing in the "real world".
I can’t believe this doesn’t have more views
Just imagine sitting on a chair made out of claytronics and the you want it to wrap around you and create an iron Man suit
Oh my gosh, I love this! How can I forget? :-)
small question what does allow me to create any electronical device that comes into my imagination if there was such thing? or would that be too difficult for that? if we had the technology to do so
oh my... i cant think of the kind of stuff i would make! and I'm literally going to be in tears if i see this happening. :o I REALLY CANT WAIT! :o
And imagine the military application! ;3
Artificial Intelligence, bioprinting, singularity, claytronics...
It makes me really sad I may not be alive to see it all integrated.
I would build a wall.
hahahahahahahahaha
GnarledBacon thinking big I see.
looks like object oriented programming just took a whole new meaning, i would love to weaponize it XD, more than likely i would have it swarm around me and respond to my gestures. may use it to scale large buildings or prevent me from falling to my death would be pretty useful.
Basic essential foundation of material elementals can reform itself by property modification 5 basic property regulated heat absorption, light sensitive, elasticity variable, magnetic variable density, breathing of energy
ok now this excites me! and if i had my own vat of claytronics i would want a headset along the lines of big hero six because that would simply be amazing!
"There is nothing new under the sun."
I'd use one of these to make another one of them...
*Genius*
To answer this man's question in the end. I would automatically make a black panther suit
legos... a shit ton of legos
Amazing video as always. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!
For an artist like myself, this is essentially the ultimate medium. I would sell my soul for it.
"Sounds like the stuff of science fiction"
Sounds like you're blizzazededly baked man, this video's length is 4:20
I would make all of the technologies that have been my life's dream to develop!
It's like the new Terminator movie. Black goo
this technology reminds me of telekinetic powers moving and reshaping earth and water. Imagine having that same power through the application of this technology. But you would only be able to make the matter float if you arranged the matter into a bunch of machines that could make it fly.
I'd think that nanoscale robotic construction using simple base materials would have more applications, but it'd be cool technology nonetheless.
How would claytronic tools compare to traditional ones. Say a claytronic hammer made of catoms (small computers) vs just an ordinary one made of steel?
thesnare100 if you had claytronic technology you wouldn't need a hammer
@@trevorcolburn2384 weight can be emulated by reactive air streams. Strength? They will be made out of titanium. But the point is, in the trunk of your car you don't have the entire factory which has built the car, right? It will make the car super big and ridiculously expensive. The same with claytronics. Parts can be manufactured and transported around, but the parts themselves don't have to be made out of catoms.
i think the first application would be for makeshift buildings, maybe in space or on other planets. larger catoms would be adequate for making buildings.
black goo
I can only think about making Transformers with this technology.
So Carnegie Mellon nearly has the microbots from Big Hero 6... Awesome! Building things from microbots will also diminish waste. If something breaks just replace the microbots, _and_ people can have almost whatever they want if they have enough microbots.
Nanotechnology iron man suit anyone ehh?
First.
This is your best episode EVER!! Ur awsomer than I thought
Id build the omnimatrix (I know its babyish but that would be awsome)
Last
Fuck
I'd have it assemble Bill Gates
I'd build a cat.
it has to be circle to move 3 dimention. try it big first then smaller and smaller to create as small as a sand and it has to be a controler or create a helmet that makes it move like in the big hero 6
I know what I am going to do when I grow up
My grandson is gonna be fucking claytronic girls?
A hand shake.. a hug... even maybe a punch to the back.
it could be very deadly. because anyone could send a Catom knife with an arm to stab you.
Imagine yourself playing a video game where you get mauled to death by a bear. Now imagine the bear mauling you to death by sticking it's jaw and paws out of your screen!
If I had it in front of me right now I would build a starship,or the materials needed for a space elevator. CX that would be awesome .
I would Imagine that Faxing your body would hurt a lot. I mean, your literally being torn apart at the molecular level and then being reconstructed piece by piece until your whole again.
First thing I'd make with it? Money. xD
Okay, more seriously though...
T-1000 is achievable if this tech comes out
Which of these is better, programmable matter or 3d printing.
Instead of putting that chair you just "built" back into a vat for storage,
why transform the chair back into a thing you use when you're alone at home?
For example, your bathtub could transform into an extra chair, when needed. A philips screwdriver --> flat head screwdriver.
This saves a lot of space because objects in your home are multi-purpose.
The first thing I would do is build a music venue with catoms: the world could always use more music!
Claytonics + Bose Einstein Condensate/ Higgs boson + Quantum AI + 4D printing
a suit that can withstand light and keep you cool at the same time
I'd create claytronic wings and make them fly me places.
We have wireless charging now, that’s gotta be huge for these things!
Or I just email you a template and you just 3D print it , because we already have that technology available.
everybody with a vat of programmable goo; gaming characters entering your home via your tele-entertainment portal; the ability to transport yourself into a neighbor's living space...what could possibly go wrong.
Damn it, i was born 50 years too early!!!!
Claytronic... Iron and clay mixing.. ?
ormus is the key to this.... it is a super conductor and can communicate from any point in spce and time
ONE EYE SYMBOLISM 👁
That one person who inhaled a carton and becomes a cyborg
I wonder if it'll be able to create life? Or at least replicate it? Cuz he did talk about that maybe he can create an image of his own/fax himself to give someone a hug or a handshake. So does that mean, it can make individual decisions even if its not really you? can that make clones too? its just really fascinating to think about it.
I would want to make something big like a car, but realistically I would start with a small test like making a ball or a cube.
