It runs as cartel. From wiki: A cartel is a group of independent market participants who collude with each other in order to improve their profits and dominate the market. Cartels are usually associations in the same sphere of business, and thus an alliance of rivals. Whats that if not EU, heh? Other powers, not that EU is "power", at least steal from non-member states. EU is the only cartel that rob its own state members.

The welfare that you suggest be reduced, has been cut at least 13 times in the preceding years and there is a mass exodus of the countries university graduates. A fifty billion dollar debt, has with compounding interest, risen to $500,000,000,000 or $50,000 per individual.Lets not mention the unemployment figures. Very simplistic and juvenile on your part to shift the attention only to one counterpart of an interdependent relationship. How are you sure the mess was created only by the corrupt Greek government? Now, the way EU lend money (loans) to Greece for instance (austerity measures), makes it impossible not to ask for further "solidarity" programms while the current debt is already unviable and not restructured. Instead of giving solutions EU expands the problematic situation among Europe, dividing Europeans North-South pointing the finger to one another. This is rubbish. EU is pumping unimaginable amounts of money into Greece and helping in every way possible. The problem is that Greece is one of the most corrupt countries in Europe. Yanks should do better to look into his own corrupt politicians than to blame the EU and so should you. You are out and that is better for the EU. We don't need any more right wing loons like Nigel Farage and corrupt clowns like Boris Johnson. You should shut up about the EU and sort yourself out. Finally people are figuring this fact out. But it has been a demonstrably empirical fact for decades.
Many people from many countries have many opinions about Britain over their leaving the EU. Some of them are correct. Many people in the UK are jingoistic narrow minded xenophobes and blatant simple minded racists.
But a few of us only wanted to leave the EU because of its corruption, its bloated bureaucracy and lack of accountability.
But I personally recognised the very real evidence of a much deeper and more disturbing malady at the core of the EU in the utterly despicable way Greece was treated in response to the so-called ‘banking crisis’.
I admire the attitudes of the Greek people towards the state theft that they call taxation. They know that the money stolen in taxes does not go to pay for services, as the government claims. It goes to the banks to pay debts run up by governments!
The more layers of state and EU superstate debts incurred, the more unjust taxation of the people.
Any rudimentary look at the Greek economy reveals the huge disparity between it and the larger industrialised members of the EU. Therefore it is simply impossible to make a valid case for Greece to have become a member. The evidence is that You would have been better off outside the EU.
But finally, this is about what the EU is now, and what it was presented as when the idea was first proposed to prospective members.
In the case of the UK in the early 1970s it was called The Common Market. A market is where people trade. It is about business.
Then it became The European Economy Community. Communities are social structures. Economics is about finances.
Now it’s the European Union - a United States of Europe, in which all the fortunes of member states are inextricably linked. Does that feel healthy? It does not to me in the UK, and I doubt it does to the people of Greece.
I hope the agents of the intelligence services stop lighting fires in your beautiful country soon.
    Peace

While Yanis Varoufakis has a point! However, a major reason for Greece's predicament is decades of corruption, mismanagement and cronyism. The lesson to be learnt from Greece is, don't run your society so incompetently, that your are department on others. I know that Greece hasn't got Norway's oil and gas resources, but surely they could ringfenced some revenue over the years, just as Singapore has. I enjoy listening to Yanis, but Greek society has to take responsibility and stop complaining.

It is very easy to blame the EU for everything that goes wrong in a country. As far as I know many countries in the EU (Greece included) insist on their political independence. If a country chooses (like Greece did) to enter the Euro-zone then you have to accept some rules for the sake of the system and you are not fully independent anymore. This was the choice of the Greek government then. In my opinion
this step came too early for Greece and its economy.
What I am missing in the EU: There are so many things that member countries could learn from each other. In German speaking countries
(Switzerland, Germany, Austria) we have professional fire-fighters, but the majority are volunteers who have professional equipment and
you can find them in many small villages. They will be the first to fight fires as they are very close. If you have to wait a long time for
fire-fighters to come you will loose the game.
Second thing: Fire-fighters came from many countries also from Germany and Austria as far as I know, but it is not so easy for countries which are 2000 km far away.
I do read Greek newspapers but nobody tells us who the people are who put the woods on fire. Who is behind these people? What is their
purpose? Is it the political opposition or other groups who expect some financial benefits? I can't find answers to this issue. Why?
Some fires brake out (not only in Greece) because some people are just stupid and underestimate the danger when throwing burning cigarettes out of their cars or burning wood in their fields.
Anyway, there are so many other unsolved issues (no access to the woods, missing roads for fire-fighters, inefficient water supply, etc.etc.)
The Greek government has to be blamed first, but also parts of Greek citizens.
