  • I've owned 4 Porsches over a 17 year period and in this video I'm going to detail how I spent less to keep these Porsches on the road than a Ford Focus I once owned cost me.

I will be completely honest here. I like your content very much! BUT, as a owner of 3 996 incl. one turbo and a DIY mechanic this is absolutely not true, while it is true parts costs and maintenance costs are not that bad, they are still higher than average. Also engine accessibility is far worse than other performance cars e.g. e46 / e92 etc.. making it necessary to lift the car. Lastly what you mention regarding the rebuild, only partially true. You are right, an engine rebuild is expansive in any car, BUT acquisition cost of an used focus engine is probable 10-15% of a m96 in the 996... So I would say it's manageable to own / maintain / repair, but it's definitely; A) more expensive B) requires more know how C) may require a lift more often. Good luck!

Thanks for adding your experience and you make some good points, especially is it pertains to working on 911’s. Some of these issues do go away if you go for a 944 or Boxster / Cayman as engine access is much better in these models.
Having said that, I probably should mentioned that if you can barely afford a Porsche and then need to rebuild the engine that you’ll probably end up having to sell it for almost nothing. I’m a fan of buying down, so if you can just afford to buy a 991 on the used market then perhaps a 997 or 996 is a smarter purchase as you’ll pay less to purchase it and can have money left over in case to worst happens.
But you make fair points and thanks for pointing them out for the added context for others.
Thanks for watching and sharing your experience.

Agree with you… just because some of these Porsches are not as expensive, they are still Porsches.. and even as a DIY, they are way more expensive than any other “regular” car

So get my wife to find an ASE certified mechanic? Got it. Wouldn't it then be even cheaper to maintain the focus at that point also??

It was and he was the one that did the engine rebuild for me at a reduced cost of labor. He also got me a deal on the machine shop for that part of the rebuild, so get your wife to work finding that ASE certified mechanic to become your friend.
Of course the Focus decided to destroy it’s engine a few months after I replaced the clutch in my 944, so that was fun financially.
