Leglocks Don‘t work he's probably already cast for some fast and furious role that has absolutely nothing to do with racing. in fact the next one might not have 1 single car in it.
Danaher is my favorite teacher. Something about the way he communicates makes the information STICK inside my brain and that is crucial when fighting or rolling.
I love how Gordan Ryan could tear the limbs off of a typical human being and is one of the greats of the sport... but he looks at John like he is seeking approval. That's some serious respect right there.
the beauty of master and master student lol. he knows john is the key to all his deepest understandings. in essence...gordan is a younger vessel for John. if john was 21 with no body issues he could do a lot of the shit himself but he can't. its the reason splinter trained the turtles man
Joe Rogan has mentioned that he and Joey Diaz have known one another for many years, and yet Joey always calls him "Joe Rogan", i.e., "I'm tellin' ya, Joe Rogan..." It's always his full name. I love the quirky people of the world. It really adds color to interaction for people to vary in this way.
I feel like I've learned 2 years worth of life-saving material in just 25 minutes. Thank you John, Bernardo, and Gordon for explaining the fundamentals of Jiu Jitsu in a clear, crisp, and concise manner.
I have A LOT of DVDs about jiu-jitsu, but Danaher's, Ryan's, along with some material from Neil Melanson, Tom DeBlass and Lachlan Giles (and Bernardo's, if you're a beginner and Keenan's if you're a hardcore gi competitor) are absolutely everything you need.
As a white belt, who is trying to make sense of the chaos that is jiu jitsu, John is immeasurably helpful in orienting me in what the hell is going on. More so than anyone else. Great introductory video.
Wow that was awesome! John's talk on Jujitsu on JRE was incredibly enlightening on what looked like chaos to me in MMA fights. It made me a fan of the martial art of Jujitsu itself. Thanks guys!
Yep. Everyone should start with the basic understanding of self-defense through the basic positions, chokes and locks, and basic throws/trips (basically just judo), then move into more involved concepts. Nothing beyond the basics is used for most street fights, anyhow.
Little tip from coming from a music producer. Filter out the lower end of the audio a bit. If you need anyone to master the audio pls let me know, I'd happily do it for you.
I’m usually a guy that just jumps into things, BJJ included. At times in class I found terms I was unfamiliar with (such as “posturing up”) or slightly lost in what my current goal was (submission). You come to realize that BJJ is so much more than the goal of “submit your opponent” and when you think about it in the steps that John and co lay out here, you can break down your match/altercation into smaller, sub goals allowing you to be more successful in the ultimate goal of submission. Like another commenter said, this video is gold - it’s given me two years of knowledge usually found by trial and error or talking with the higher belts at your gym in only 25 minutes. Amazing!
Thank you so much! This is exactly what I was missing from my training at the gym - clarifies the foundational logic of the sport in such a clear way. I adore your way of explaining. Much thanks!! 🙏😊
1. Take fight to ground Top system 2. Get past dangerous legs (passing guard) and into dominant upper body pin Neon belly (ok punching position) Mount (better punching position) Rear mount (best position for punching/submission) 3. Work through hierarchy of pins Movements around opponents body to go from pin to pin The more that pin offers control and leads to striking ability the more reward the pin gets 4. Submissions Joint lock or strangle lock to finish
this video changed my life. i've been training in a gym where i dont speak the language and a lot gets lost in translation. this is the first time things are coherently explained to me so can have clear goals. my game has improved noticeably. thank you
Really love how you guys have brought so many awesome players into a massive Think-tank of grappling lol. Cheers to you all, and thank you for so many contributions to the game!
Amazing. Talk about making something which others can make complex relatively simple. When people can do this you know they know what they’re talking about. But moreover what you guys have achieved using the principles explained adds credibility to why you are an authority in BJJ. Thank you for sharing.
BJJ as a system 2-6 steps 1. Get taken down 2. Apply submission if available 1. Take down opponent 2. Pass opponents legs 3. Establish increasingly dominant positions 4. Apply submission (lock or strangle) 1. Get taken down 2. Recover guard 3. Sweep opponent over and establish top position 4. Pass opponents legs 5. Establish increasingly dominant positions 6. Apply submission (lock or strangle)
Ha ha ! I've noticed the sound isn't that great in some of the videos. Since they spend so much time and energy capturing important BJJ knowledge, perhaps they should consult with some sound professionals on what the best setup is to use.
Knee on belly I think is the most annoying technique (if at the bottom). After my first week of attending Jiu Jitsu class, during resistance training, my partner which is way more experienced than I am did the knee on belly on me. Not just the knee on belly but he did a great job of sliding his knee more towards my sternum which Made me feel like my ribs were going to shatter.
It's interesting that BJJ can be broken down into training methods, conceptual methods, various flow analysis, and goal seeking. Danaher is wonderful in his method of trying to give those practicing it a logical set of methods. You may be good as an instinctive athlete understanding it through body feel (proprioception), but it's always important to have a conceptual game to help you progress. There are various things bjj and subgrappling allows - a variety of different types of opponents, a variety of 'games' and positions, catch and release, hard combative rolling (like Eddie Bravo does) and it all has high authenticity, movement, pressure, energy and applicability.
This and a video Chris Haueter did are hands down the best two videos I've ever seen on BJJ theory and fundamentals. Your systemization and logical approach to the art is fantastic. I wish I had more than one like to give.
Its always a pleasure to be on the videos with John :)
:) 👍😀
Thanks man always great
This should be day one, minute one viewing for all new white belts. No surprise it is a collaboration from two great houses of BJJ. Oss.

It‘s time for mr Danaher to become a Bond villain

Thats awesome... And we agree with that :) :) :)
I hope John continues making videos into his 90s like some kind of BJJ version of David Attenborough.
Craig Starger David strangleborough
😅😅😅
I love how Gordan Ryan could tear the limbs off of a typical human being and is one of the greats of the sport... but he looks at John like he is seeking approval.
That's some serious respect right there.
Miroslaw Horbal some serious hespect right there.

That nod at 15:11 gave me this vibe:
Supreme overlord of Jiu jitsu Danaher: Yes Gordon Ryan proceed.
LOLLLLLLL
😂
So accurate haha
gave me a vibe too lol i rewinded that moment so many times
The only thing better is the Mortal Kombat moment at 15:47
"...Finish him." 15:46 Just sounded so natural.
Darth Sidious vibes
"finish him" (john danaher, 19.6.2019)
😂👌
made me lol hard
John Danaher is, secretly, Shang Tsung. He reaps souls through his undead ninja lieutenants Ryan and Tonon's leg locks.
Mortal Kombat theme song started playing in my head the moment he said it 😂
KANO WINS. FATALITY
Love how John Danaher always refers to Gordon as 'Gordon Ryan'. "Hey John", "Hello Gordon Ryan"
hahahahahaha :)
Joe Rogan has mentioned that he and Joey Diaz have known one another for many years, and yet Joey always calls him "Joe Rogan", i.e., "I'm tellin' ya, Joe Rogan..." It's always his full name.

Right on, Thomas Hudson
@@tomwolfe7782 Joe "H"ogan as Machado would say 😂
It's because they're both first names, Danaher's powerful intellect glitches out as he's trying to follow the rules of english grammar

As a white belt, the step by step breakdown of BJJ has just helped me immeasurably. Thank you to all of the Professors who made this video!
Four stripe white belt here. Wish I had seen this when I started, feel like I wasted the first 6 months. Great work, great communication. Keep it up!
Actually, it complement what you have learned. You knew what to do, now you know why to do and when to do. 😉
Thank you for the lesson Dr Evil

Any white belt should watch this at least 10 times first, before even stepping on any mat. Understanding is always a solid foundation for practice.
Thanks so much for the support. We truly appreciate it a lot :) :) :)
This should be made mandatory in every beginner's jiujitsu class

The podcast was amazing. Its so cerebral and there is so much insight, just go watch it
This video had my normally scattered and chaotic brain, completely captivated the entire time. That’s quite a feat. Great stuff!
I didn’t know Bernardo’s guard passing was actually so complicated. I don’t think he ever taught it. I’m going to look it up. I got to know it.
I love the way John teaches.
Great video thank you John, Bernardo and Gordon
