“It fits for some reason and I don’t know why” is like the motto for DGD
Through all of their singers and phases, this has always remained true lol
Michael Morris Yup. Early Johnny Craig days was the same sound but with Justin Timberlake vocals
I was just about to comment this
Robert's Music same here though, was just about to mention that it’s the reason I fell in love with this band
@@radstronaut lol right like with 'Everything I Say Is Royal Cream'
"Those gaps are nice"
Tilians teeth, "Thank you."
Donovan Johnson OH MY GOOOD XD
At first I thought he complimented tilian's teeth gap 🤣
Gita Suciana same lmao
Actually Lol'd
lmaooooooo
Get ready to fall down the DGD rabbit hole. Over a hundred songs just as good as this one. These guys never disappoint.
Glad i wasn't too late to discover them!
Absolutely agree. Its crazy how diverse yet consistent theyve been in some way. Probably the band with the most exciting discography ive ever heard.
I fell down this rabbit hole a couple months ago. This is now my favorite band.
They do have one single bad song.
"it fits for some reason and I don't know why" it's called juxtaposition and that is the only way I know how to describe DGD
Inspire the liars is a good starting place for DGD, it’s their most viewed music video on UA-cam. Summertime gladness or Young Robot might be good songs to react to if you want more funky, upbeat songs. You really can’t go wrong with any song of theirs tho. Also I think you’d be very impressed by Eidola, they’re a band in a similar vein to DGD. Check out Tetelestai by them.
I like eidola but tetelestai by phinehas is better imo lol
I really don't see how eidola is similar
Love the reaction. If you want another "standard" DGD song that really shows off Tilian's vocals you should check out "We Own the Night". If you want one with a very different one you should check out "Prisoner".
“The band called inspired the liars” yes and the song is dance Gavin dance
Hahaha, oh man. I had to go back and listen for this line. Whelp....
DGD has released instrumental versions of all their records if you're ever curious
BURAEDLI I loved them but there’s an obvious lack of volume compared to the original mixes. It’s like really quiet and I have to turn up my radio. Bummer
And there all amazing fyi
Man of the year is man favorite song by DGD and would love for you to check it out
but DGD puts out almost nothing but good jams so take your pick lol
Chucky vs The Giant Tortoise would be a great second reaction to this band.
You can check out Erra ( Breach , Eye of God or Dementia ) , should be worth listening to them if you like technical display
rebirth is by far their best track
Jesse cash is a God
i'm absoooolutely loving the dgd content ! my all time fav band, seen them 3 times live ! keep it up, dude. loving ittttt ✊
I was supposed to see them live for the first time next month but now I've got to wait until next year 😭
saaaame, super bummed 🤧
Man Of the Year by them is killer. Just a heavy hitter where the entire band lets loose and really gets aggressive. Not as technical or noodly, more of a metal core vibe than anything else on this album. Check it out!
One of my favorite songs with Tilian
Carve as well. One of my top favorites
@@bradhuff5131 Carve is fantastic
A friend of mine who majored in music theory listened to Man of the Year and said that, on a technical level, it's probably one of the best songs ever written.
My dude I'm loving the reviews and all the dgd content. Their band has gone through several lineups and sound changes while still retaining a similarity, mostly around will swan's guitarwork. I'd love to see more reviews to get to see a variety of their old and new work and see what you think of their growth and different sounds.
As far as "any bands that sound like this" Bands like The Fall of Troy, Red Museum, Chiodos, Strawberry Girls & A Lot Like Birds would also be great choices to check out. DGD's lead guitarist Will Swan has his own record label called Blue Swan Records & most bands under that (ie. Stolas, Hail the Sun, Sianvar, etc.) fall under this type of Post-Hardcore/Math-Rock sound which has been playfully dubbed Swancore lol Most artists from this subgenre have connections to each other too which is also kinda fun to map out (like they share a lot of members from each other's bands)
Dude, Circa Survive
I'd love for you to react to some Architects. A few possible songs:
A Match Made In Heaven
Doomsday
Royal Beggars
Modern Misery
Gone With The Wind
Death Is Not Defeat
Gravedigger
Royal Beggars or Doomsday would DEFINITELY be his best introduction to the band. All songs are bomb, but those would resonate the most I think.
YES DGD! One of my favourite bands. So weird and random and still kind of cohesive.Lyrics and videos are allways so random and the instrumental work is on another lvl. I think you would really enjoy their song "Evaporate".
Their riffs remind me of Polyphia.
Please add to the list Infant Annihilator: "Swinnaecologist" or "Soil the stillborn"
one of the fastest metal bands
id say just for the lols of a video , blasphamian would be hilarious
@@DeathShark00 i thought of that but hes not ready, he will not give a chance to the band again after that haha
@@appeasedbeast408 we have to protect him from Motherless Miscarriage at all costs.
I saw/heard polyphia for the first time at a DGD concert. Ive been hooked every since
You have to check out their recent song called Prisoner.
Their most recent song is strawberry's Wake not prisoner
Oops, seems like I missed the newest one. Thx. Took a listen, I prefer Prisoner.
If there was one phrase to sum up Dance Gavin Dance. "It fits together and I don't know why"
I’ve been a fan since 2010. They’ve had three different lead singers and so many albums. Do another video on their latest album please!!!
Strawberry's Wake can give you some of that difference for the screamer, Jon. I was extremely happy to hear him scream in a poppy-style part of the song. Even considering getting those lyrics tattooed
he's basically singing with distortion in that song
You want complex, do check out Man of The Year by them, that song is so chaotic and beautiful at the sametime.
The DGD reaction finally came! Thanks, Brian! I'm glad you liked them and hope you'll return with a different song in the future. The band has gone through a bunch of lineup changes, but they've always had the clean/unclean, dual singer dynamic. If you listen to a song off of "And I Told them I Invented New Romans", you'll get a taste of their roots.
You should really check out the band Issues. I recommend Hero, Home Soon, or Beautiful Oblivion. They somehow combine pop/r&b, funk, and metal in the most perfect way.
Please do more dgd! This is just the tip of the iceberg! I would recommend man of the year or maybe some older stuff if you want some real technical music like “and I told them I invented times new Roman”
Yay! Dance Gavin Dance!
Love this band, just discovered them recently. Check out Panegyrist - Ophidian Crucifix for some interesting avant-garde black metal.
I like is critiques in this video. I will say though, I don’t feel the vocal aspect is generic. I feel dance was definitely in the first boom of post hardcore to have clean and dirty vocals with the different vocal sounds
That's definitely one of the "problems" (if you can call it that) of listening to this stuff now. I don't have the perspective of when this was new, I can only look at it all through the lens of the present.
In a similar vein of a math rock/post hardcore sound, fcpremix by the fall of Troy would be fun to hear your thoughts on
Hey man. I love DGD, Blue Dream is great, but their Whatever I Would Say is Royal Ocean EP is fantastic all the way through. If you like them, I’d recommend Chiodos- Baby You Wouldnt Last a Minute in the Creek or Sianvar- 1100 Days.
Also though, I think you would really enjoy This Town Needs Guns- If I sit still, maybe I’ll get out of here; TTNG is one of my favorite bands of all time. They’re definitely math rocky, but it’s one of the few songs I can listen to on repeat and never get tired of
Please this. Any TTNG song off of "Animals" (e.g., Pig, Panda, Gibbon, Baboon, Chincilla are some of my favorite). Favorite band by far.
@@NickMcMillen16 Animals is great. Same with 13.0.0.0.0, I just love the EP though
@@swagxmagician Agreed! On Spotify they have If I Sit Still and "26" on their Animals album for some reason as well. Everything that make is gold.
This is the first I'm hearing of this band but if they are in the company of Chiodos or DGD than I'm ready for that.
@@CriticalReactions I actually wouldn't say they sound anything like them, but all of their songs are a treat to listen to and I'd love to hear your thoughts on them. Thanks for your awesome videos man!
I smiled so hard watching you react to them for the first time. Enjoy the DGD rabbit hole!! They’ve had multiple singers throughout their career and every phase is great in its own way.
React to Son of a Robot next or Summertime Gladness or Bloodwolf by DGD
I love how Jon always something going on in the music videos thats just so comical in comparison to the rest of the band. everyones having fun but he's having the most fun out of all of them haha
10:10 they have released instrumental versions of all of their albums (except the cursed one that swanposting knows about) and you should definitely check out the instrumental version of this song!
WISIRO: *sad noises*
Rip WISIRO. Big sad
WISIRO is the only reason I realized DGD was a sick ass band
Excuse me, how dare you call WISIRO cursed? Shame on you.
Nah jk, the band has their reasons for wanting to leave that album behind. Still sucks though, because it's still genuinely good, albeit being by far their least standout material.
@@MyoticTesseract I agree
You actually guessed their songwriting style very well haha. Tilian has said in the past that he takes the weird ass shit that Will Swan and Matt come up with and attempt to make it listenable
Not sure if you’ve ever listened to Igorrr. He and his group released a new album SPIRITUALITY AND DISTORTION. my favorites are “Lost in Intrspection” and “Overweight Poesy”.
If not in the channel I definitely recommend checking out the entire album on your own. Thanks for uploading in this crazy time. Hope you’re enjoying time with your daughter and little family members! Peace.
You’ll find every element of this song in almost EVERY song they’ve done recently. Their past is a little hazy but it’s been pretty much all hits since adding Tillian Pearson (clean vocalist). Great review! Son of Robot, Count Bassy, or Head Hunter are all amazing, check them out!
Will Swan is an absolute legend. I’m not sure anyone can ever do what he has done for over 10 years with this band. Incredible really.
Will must have a shit-ton of patience to deal with half of the shit that band's been through.
The drummers an og too. Been around since day 1
Oh man if he thought this song was good wait until he checks out their discography!! Most solid and persistent of any band I’ve listened to
Travis Cunninghams twin! Look up Critical Role if you're not familiar.
If you wanna hear the other vocalist (not the cleans) go a little more all over, you can check out their song "Man of the Year". Or you can check out his other project called Secret Band where he does some really strange stuff sometimes haha.
If you could do Strawberry's wake by DGD that'd be awesome! It's their newest song I believe.
For showing off DGD's talent I think Man of the Year is the best to go with. And And I Told You I Invented Times New Roman is a good song to see where they started from (Jonny was the clean singer at that point not Tilian, but Jon (unclean), Will (Guitar), & Matt (Drums) were all in the band then as well).
So glad you liked them, they're by far one of my favorite bands. If I could recommend another song by them I think you'd really like Evaporate, it features a vocalist from another band, Eidola, who is similar to DGD. Keep up the great content!
If you wanna check out more by them listen too prisoner, deception , here comes the winner, evaporate and tbh there are a lot more great songs by them lol
So, lately I fell down a rabbit hole of watching reaction videos. This was a great one though. It had a lot more substance than the "that was cool" "I liked that " reactions that make up lots of other reaction videos. I appreciate the content and thought you put into listening to this.
If you want more john mess you should check out Secret Band.
lets get some Protest the Hero - 'bone marrow' or just anything because they shred
My dude.. not only did you recommend PTH but you went with Fortress! Yeeaaaaa
This is a great suggestion
That's a very fair analysis. I'd encourage you to check out more of their material. They have had quite a few vocalists, so it'd be awesome to hear your take on their progress through the years.
That's interesting. Being that the vocalist tend to have a heavier presence in most songs I'm curious as to how the vocalists end up influencing the sound, or at least the soundscape, of their music.
A night at the spleen by Closure in Moscow is awesome
And best of all, they can pull this off flawlessly live :)
The Receiving End of Sirens - This Armistice....One of the three singers/guitar players is the lead dude in The Dear Hunter. Amazingly good post hardcore/experimental band.
axelthesot Yes!! That, or Planning A Prison Break. TREoS never got the fair shake they deserved
One of the most underrated bands from that genre.
Wardens calling for a lock down baby!!!!!!
This is off topic but your so handsome!!!
One of my favorite bands. All their songs always have a groovy feel. They also sound great live.
Aah, rad review dude! Love to see more people getting into DGD 🤩
I'd definitely recommend Eidola (my intro to them was Transcendentium, Pt. II: Fourth Temple and I loooved it), Wolf & Bear (Deleto or Red Hen maybe), Here's to Now (Rose Gold), and Shrezzers (I love E.M.O.J.I.Q.U.E.E.N)
check out their newer song prisoner
You need to do more dgd songs to understand them completely. Especially when they had 2 clean vocals before Tillian. But imo Tillian is the best fit for the band and theyre reaching their peak potential rn. Can't wait for Afterburner!
Yeah.... You're going to like Intervals.
These guys don't make Any bad songs. I hope you react to more of them😊. Chucky vs the giant tortoise is my favorite from them
Vocally, this somewhat reminds me of Emery. You should check out "The Cheval Glass."
I always love seeing people who recommend Emery. It reminds me that im not the only one who knows of these truly great guys. One thing I love about them is that they are way more complex than they sound and they really do get experimental without sounding weird and staying very accessible
Please do Prisoner by Dance Gavin Dance or Strawberrys Wake
All of the swancore come swooping in with suggestions lol (React to Sianvar, side project of the guitarist here and others, Omniphobia)
If you liked this, check out A Lot Like Birds - Connector and Eidola - Houses Movement III: Rust/Rebuild (or literally anything by either of those bands, those are just two examples I personally find interesting)
i love that you dont stop the song while sharing some initial thoughts
drives me nuts when people do that
Look up "swancore". It's the easiest catch all for this branch of post hardcore
I would seriously love for you to check out some of their older stuff with Johnny Craig it’s so good.. may I suggest lemon meringue tie
I always say the thing I love so much about them is the juxtaposition of Tillian's beautiful angelic singing and Jon's just brash abrupt screaming
Please review The Afterimage - ONYX. you won’t be disappointed
Shoulda titled this "Normal human reacts to Dance Gavin Dance"
Check "Death of a Strawberry" to see fry vocalists Jon Mess sing a melodic hook... In fry...
My fav song by them is "and I told them I invented times new roman"
I think I've heard that one... or maybe I've just heard the name. It's a unique name and it's quite familiar to me for one reason or another. I do need to listen to more DGD regardless.
@@CriticalReactions all I know is I'd like to sing as high as those guys, maybe not all the time because high notes definitely strike harder when used sparingly, but still :D
Veil of Maya - Outsider. I think you’d appreciate the rhythm of the song.
Parody Catharsis by Dance Gavin Dance! You’d love it
Loved how in depth your review went into examining the song, it's wonderful seeing you dissect and criticize what makes the particulars of what makes up the song's sound. If you ever revisit this band I would recommend Alex English off of their self-titled album.
If you want to go for a ride.... you have to listen to "Here Comes The Winner". That songs takes you on so many side journeys musically. Absolutely dig these guys. Very talented band.
Eternity Forever - Movies.
Eidola - The Comfort We Find in Our Vices
Jon Mess (the screamer) may not be an AMAZING vocalist, but the reason I think he is one of the best in the game is because he is the most CONSISTENT vocalist out there. The past 5 years he has been fantastic on every single track that he sings on. Jon Mess is a GOD!!!!
First of all, thanks for the reaction.
Second- I've been listening to this band for a while now, but as with a lot of groups I listen to in cycles, this listen-through here made me focus on something new.
The instrumentation in the chorus (specifically at 2:13 going on) is tighter than a siamese twin. 😤
Top shelf.
If you want to see what the fry is capable of, listen to Secret Band - Lightning (all of the members of DGD minus the lead singer)
I really enjoyed your take on this - I agree with the idea of the vocalists sort of tying everything together that wouldn't be necessarily accessible otherwise. All DGD songs are great. I would say that they've gotten better at putting songs together on their most recent albums, if that's even possible. Prisoner is a just fantastic tune and Strawberry's Wake is a riot. Jon Mess's screams have also gotten much better IMO, he can express and emote better than most screamers. Would recommend listening to Prisoner, Man of the Year, Bloodsucker, Suspended in this Disaster.
If you like the doubled up voal you really need to check out Variation by them. It's probably the best clean/scream pairing they've done
You are spot on with your analysis, but I think you are undervaluing Tillian and Jon. Their vocals are critical to the band and they are both extremely talented.
I admire the tact you use when describing the song. Not stepping on toes :) Really good and inciteful video! I'm glad you didn't pay any mind to the video lol, I always wanted a musical take on this song.
If you wanna see what else the fry vocalist has done, or see how he is without the clean vocalist, check out secret band. It’s basically DGD but without Tilian, really great band.
Gush away. These guys are killer. That song perfectly represents what they're all about.
My favorite band.... inspire the liars
m.ua-cam.com/video/3bO1m0Z5w2A/v-deo.html#dialog
Singer number 3, research!
Lololol I remember making the exact same face he makes at 5:04!!!!! That quick moment of ohh shit thats beautiful kills me every time
Check out the song open your eyes and look north by dance gavin dance. Its their best song and has some amazing melodies. I noticed you mentioned that the singer doesn't gel with the instruments, so I think you'd like the original singer.
Whatever i say is royal oceans was my first taste of DGD back in 2008? I think it was and Ive been on board ever since
If you wanna hear a song with a good amount of the two vocalists singing together listen to "Chucky vs The Giant Tortoise.
if you want complexity check out chucky vs the giant tortoise or prisoner
Another great one to check out is Carl Barker (Tree City Sessions version)
You should do vitalism ~ pagan II or bipolarity !
Dance Gavin Dance does not really have a bad song. Any song is a good place to continue.
if you like both singers at once, check out their song variation
Pls react “separate wounds” by counterparts
React to DGD We Own the night (Live) Next!!
Check out Higher by Sleep Token
His reaction at 5:05 is literally mine every time I listen to that part of this song lmao
I hate how so many reaction videos talk over the high note at 2:40 lol
It did have a time signature change though I think.
