  • This is for guitars that are being retro fit with the solderless EMG Volume, Tone and the EMG 3 Way (B165) 3 positions switch. I recommend ordering the B165 if you have this hardware setup on your guitar!

    Listen to this guy, he knows what he’s talking about. I got an 81/85 b165 kit off of Reverb to put in my Jackson JS22. Came with master volume and passive tone 25K pots. After realizing none of the included diagrams matched my intended setup exactly I went for this same configuration, but it didn’t work right at first. There were 3 problems: 1) Volume pot was super scratchy (even after a gallon of D5), 2) Turning the volume up past 3/4 actually made it quieter and 3) Tone was generally crappy and both pickups sounded the same. Turned out the root cause was simple - I had wired up the TRS output Jack wrong. Fixed that and suddenly everything worked.

    So this may be an older video but still very relevant. I just ordered the H4 and H3 and I went and ahead and bought the 3 way selector for my LTD M-10. I kept trying to figure out how the bus it came with and selector connected together and was getting frustrated. Luckily this was the first video I watched and if you get the 3 way selector from EMG you definitely don't need to use the bus. Thanks for the video man! Saved me a lot of time and confusion!

    You can utilize a old switch connected on the screw clamps at the provided battery bus or you can buy a three way toggle switch from EMG (B289 for a LTDViper or Eclipse) and quick connect it to the battery bus either way it’s the same functionality. thanks for the tutorial and explanations. I just got the 57/66 set..put them in Jackson DK2M. Did the exact schematic like you (switch included from EMG) but when I roll up my volume, I get noise like I would have some ground issues. However, if I touch parts of the guitar, no popping sound comes out. Schematic is just like yours. I compered it to a prewired pickguard fro EMG - the Steve Lukather set on my strat...way less noise in that guitar. Do you know a reason his might be?

    OMG, thanks for posting. I was at my wits' end trying to figure out how to use both the BUS and the SWITCH. I figured out.. that well, the only way out is ... NO BUS. Combining EMG PUs and the EMG swith is really the only combination they don't cover in manuals.
    Anyway... do you think it's OK to use the switch with passive PUs? I've have passive HZ4s with the EMG switch so I figured that if I exclude battery wiring, it should work....
    EDIT: Nevermind, it does work - EMG's just confirmed that to me ;)

    Def appreciate this video bc I got here just to try and verify my own assumptions....which is follow diagram #7 "Daisy Chained Controls"....with the exception you just don't include the extra active control pot they showed in this diagram. Otherwise, completely the same. But I admit, I got looking up your video because the same reason you mentioned, they for whatever reason, did not include a specific diagram labeled and illustrated for such a setup. It assumes you're smart enough to just omit that last active pot and go straight to the input jack from the tone pot. Not impossible to figure out, but frustrating they didn't make it more clear

      @@jriff79guitar Yea apparently they never thought anyone would buy an active set of pickups AND a solderless switch. heck the official EMG videos show switches with just one set of plugs on them. I assume at one point they were still using the bus that comes with the active pickups to route stuff, but then eventually decided to put all those connections onto the switches PCB. So even their official videos were not a helpful as yours lol

    • @jriff79guitar
      @jriff79guitar  3 роки тому

      @@metalskizzo exactly, I find EMG products are very good, and thats all I use in my guitars. However, their diagrams and videos lack details for the common guitar player looking to upgrade with their products. The solderless connections are really convenient, but they lack detail in the different ways the toggle switch configurations can be executed for the different oem blade switches that exist in most guitars. I'm covering the Jim Root Daemonum retroactive set I just installed in my Ibanez RG350DX next, and how to use the EMG buss with the standard import 5P blade switch, if you don't have the EMG switch on hand.

      I'm sorry to hear that, you are the 3rd person to reach out to me about this not working. I would recommend looking up the EMG diagram for your setup and following it very closely. Others have had luck with this as you can see, but if I had to guess you probably have a wire somewhere hooked up wrong. Make sure you have the battery hooked up and the input jack wires on the right prongs. The toggle switch wiring can also be a little tricky, get yourself a diagram if you don't already have one. That is about the best I can recommend without looking at it.

      for what it is worth, the literature clearly says "FOR ACTIVE EMG PICKUPS ONLY". I don't think this specific switch was designed for passive pickups. however, at least one other user chimed in on this video saying they did it with passive pickups and it works so who knows. I know that isn't too helpful, but again, for what it is worth, it may very well be incompatible. I know when I took out my passive pickups to put in the active ones there were additional ground wires soldered to various locations, one spot being directly under the pickup. sounds like you have a ground missing if it hums all the time....and perhaps when you touch a certain part or wire, I bet it stops? if so that is a classic indicator of a ground wire either missing or having a poor connection
