    Those of us that truly "hear" & dig this gifted music are extremely fortunate.

    Jack is a beast. Ok all of them are top end at their craft.

    Just listened to this 2X again after not hearing it for awhile. Still fantastic music. Woody Shaw was super hip and Jackie was so good, which is why he's been my favorite alto player for decades (next to Bird in my book). Jack DeJonette and Cecil McBee were masters of their instruments too, and McCoy, well what can you say. A true monster. I love this stuff.

    Jackie's was one of the first to give Jack and Cecil a job. Heard them live in the late 60s in a band that included Bobby Hutcherson.

    Jack Dejonette gives it all, but with such detail and motif driven ideas. I've never seen any work harder, but without a wasted calorie.

    Just marvellous overall sound. I saw Jackie perform in a play entitled : The Connection, at The Duke of York Theatre, St, Martins Lane, London, U.K. ( 1961 ) also
    featured in this play was Freddie Redd, trio. There is a very interesting Biography of Jackie McLean by Derek Ansell. ( 2012 )

    This was from the Blue Note concert in '85, part of the rejuvenation of the label at that time. I'd love to see the full concert posted.

      I second that. And preferably in remastered form, minus the watery sound quality.

    Been waiting to see this for a while! They cut this off the original Blue Note Anniversary concert LP and Video! Fantastic! I think that all except McCoy were smoking slightly more on Appointment in Ghana, but nonetheless an amazing performance by an amazing band!!

    Wow! My estimation of Jackie goes way up after listening to this (never really listened to him much). He sounds like Coltrane here (I realize he plays alto and not tenor, yet...).

      Matthew Keenan Check out any of the J Mac Attack band live dates from the 80s and 90s. Even Kenny Garrett gives it up to Jackie as being the first player to really adapt Trane to the alto, well him and Gary Bartz.

  • @kingpleasure

    @K43TOC ....and of the 21st too. But it's not funny, it's tragic. These guys go begging while hip hop, (c)rap and drivel by the likes of Justin Beeper or Lady GagMe get millions of views and all the money. It speaks volumes!

  • @kingpleasure
    @kingpleasure 13 років тому

    @truetothemusic99 I never said they were begging. It was a metaphor to describe the fact that this video has had only 7000 views while famous little-talent pop artists like those I mentioned get millions of hits. Truth is however that it underscores the reality that most of the great jazz artists were relative paupers. Justin Beaver has an $187,000 Ferrari to play with (he just crashed it). I wonder how many years it took each of the musicians on this date to earn that amount.

    I wonder why Jack seems to be tired or something, maybe this is from the end of the set?

    But that's always the case King. By definition, the most "average," band or talent is the one most people will relate to.
