Yeah, I kind of like the idea of them as "law's attempt to shape and contain chaos" but they aren't really well designed as independent agents of pure chaos. Well you see in order to transform a green slaad into a grey slaad you have to trade to another game, then trade it back, at which point it will evolve into a grey slaad. But then how does a grey slaad transform into a death slaad? Simple, level up while holding an ornamental skull.
One thing you missed, Rhexx: Slaadi can be spawned by the usual parasitic methods, or by the Spawning Stone (hence the name.) Those spawned by the Spawning Stone carry a tiny part of it inside of their heads. This can be removed surgically or magically. Once you remove this tiny, gem-like implant, the Slaad must obey you. If the gem is destroyed, you lose control over it. Slaadi can also get (or regain) the gem by coming into contact with the Spawning Stone.

I had a character who wanted to get the most powerful barbarian greatsword ever made. He was chaotic good, and was told that if he got a piece of another plane he could use it as part of the components. So he went on a "conquest" to get parts for a magic greatsword that was not magical but perfect for a barbarian. Killing 44 slaads and collecting their bodyparts was a huge part of that quest. He also collected a lot of mattter from limbo. Bascially he slaughtered enough of the damn things to appease his barbarian gods to allow him to have such a sword. oh and he collected these massive bags of blood from the slaad as well. He had 2 bags of holding to keep these parts intact. So all the blood went into one bag, all the remains and matter in the other. The funny thing is when he opened the parts bag a bunch of slaad came out of it to attack him. it was so funny, the crap he went through to get this greatsword made. Something to do between levels 10-30!
Very nice video, Rhexx, really enjoyed it. Just a thing: As the first video on the D&D Series was about the general layout of the Forgotten Realms and you especifically stressed that most content for 5e is set in the North, what about making some videos about those "Forgotten Realms" located there (Illefarn, Illusk, Ardeep and the like)? It's a pretty imortant part of the setting IMO, hence the name. I think it could help everyone to understand the setting and the flavor of the game a little bit better by offering some background info.
By the moons, I love all your DnD lore videos! Keep up the AWESOME content. This is such a great way to share and learn about the lore. I also love all the art you find for everything, it is Such a great help for imagining and understanding things. Stay geeky.
That's a sound logical theory, but we're talking about creatures of elemental chaos (of which there is incomplete and fluctuating lore) in limbo. For example, we don't know how permanent death is for a death slaad, limbo might copy existing beings occasionally through some means (perhaps including space-time shenanigans), more powerful slaad (or the spawning stone might be able to create death slaad through some unknown method, or maybe the method of creating death slaad used to not require their death but now does because chaos (meaning that death slaad are constantly decreasing _currently_) ...and those are just some possibilities that make sense in an orderly logical way.
Technically we know at least one other way existed at some point to make the first ones... Its safe to say this is the most well known and probably the primary way they come to be. However the spawning stone almost certainly CAN make them. Remember it did make the first of the slaads that reproduce by other means. However how often it does so is hard to tell, if I were to guess it would mirror the modron march in frequency happening only every few hundred years in response to increased order the chaos of Limbo would want to increase the chaos of the multiverse and since gray slaads and up are the ones that tend to leave the plane it would make sense that it would make them when the numbers are lower or when a certain amount of gray slaads desire to become more powerful.
I would assume that the Entropy lord guy can make them, and that they sometimes randomly arise from Limbo. Trying to apply logic to a creature of pure chaos is not a good plan.
i think the way slaad evolve is kindda like how promotion in corporate ladder works. grey slaad became death slaad after killing and devouring said slaad OR after said slaad evolve/promote into a white slaad, a certain/ random grey slaad'll evolve into a death slaad by the power of chaos, from slaad of white or higher rank, that "tears apart molecule" and reconstruct them. the caste system of slaads is maintain by a certain ratio as the population grows, but at any one time there's only one of each unique lord class AKA the CEO, CFO, PSO etc.
I though it was a coincidence that you and web DM did similar things so close to each other but its awesome you watch them too. I think a cool creature to do a video like this on would be Hags and the varieties there of. Keep up the awesome work man.
And now I'm terrified of slaads. Now I have to lay this information on my DM. But this video has given me insight on another one of D&D's creatures, thank you mrrhexx
Thank you for this video about the Slaad, it gave me a sh*tton of ideas for my campain. So bad, I don't like the idea of "A turns into B, then into C, then into D". What do you think of this: - Green slad --> grey slaad with a ritual - Red/Green slad --> another type of slaad if many green or grey slaad make a ritual together. And that's it. Keep it simple. Thanks again for your videos, it's really an amazing work !
Love your voice for this. I've already binged all your videos and would pretty much like any subject... but perhaps on the various types of undead, or more obscure elemental creatures.
Wait, if the only way to make a death slad is through the death of another death slad, but the requirement to advance further is just time, then the death slads would eventually go extinct.
I actually found this channel while looking for D&D stuff honestly great content. I enjoy listening to these and wondering where this would fit into my game.
Hamilton it was thanks to his shambling mound video that I added one in with a fight with a young green dragon. The party learned while fighting the mound that it was corrupted and one party member removed the demon seed from it and then had the mound help with the dragon fight. It was close since everyone took crazy damage from the dragons acid breath right at the start lol
Haha that sounds really epic, specially that it seems like they just escaped death and getting the mound to help in their efforts against the dragon and this was their only way out. I think I'm going use a green Slaad in this upcoming friday game, he is going to be a more powerful underling to this crazy powerful and evil warlock I'm about to introduce to my party. Since they have the ability to shape shift, I'm going to make him shape shift into the local hermit they have been getting help and council from for the last few games, he was the one that gave them alot of clues about this great evil that has been corrupting the land. I'm going to make them think that they been tricked this whole time. Along side that they're only level 4 and they burnt through most of their stuff in the last game, so a fight with a green Slaad should prove a challenge along with a few minions XD. Then once they hopefully slay the green Slaad he will shape shift back into his normal form. They will be confused weather that creature was the local hermit the whole time or not. Only to find the hermit inside a cage in the basement below, tortured and weak. Again confusing them to weather he is real or yet another illusion. XD
One question... Would it be possible to retain your will as a Slaad? As in, if your character turns into one, can you just roll with it and play as a Slaad?
If that is possible, you'd have to have an incredibly high INT or WIS score, or be under the influence of some godly spell. And even then, the disease may simply not allow it. There's lots of stuff to experiment with as a DM.
The process of turning into a Slaad warps mind and body so unfortunately even with high mental stats you would become a creature driven by chaos itself since I don't believe you're allowed any form of save roll once the process has started
Typically no. DM's have complete control over what happens. Now you could do something crazy like cage the ex-party member crazed Slaad in question, and then cast a wish spell upon them, but again it's up to the DM. They could just give it to you, or make you roll a new sheet for said creature, and even do things like lower your stats. There's too much potential, which is normally a good thing, so it's left behind. If you want, go play a monster pc campaign. Those are very fun.
I will forever roleplay slaad with slav accents and mannerism. "Ey bylat!" *Drinks vodak. "You havve seen red comrade pig slaad here yes?" *cue hard bass*
If a blue Slaad hits a blue Slaad, you still get a red Slaad and vice versa. Green is the only one that has no clear indicator of what it makes, but that's fine because chaos can just do what it wants.
Nothing about control gems? The 5e monster manual includes a Slaad variant (meaning it's not 100% canon?) that has a gem in it's head, put there by the spawning stone. If removed, the holder can command the Slaad to do whatever they like. One read is that the Slaads are Limbo's way of getting rid of the spawning stone, sending it out to other realms piece by piece. It could also be that Primus recognises the need for cosmic ballance and Slaads are part of a plan to spread chaotic creatures that he could switch off if he wanted to.
@Crigon It's a table top RPG that can be played in different ways. Some people play with just pencil, paper and dice. Other players will add to that combo a tactical map and miniatures that represent your characters, monsters and NPCs. Others play online with each other through various mediums. All of these methods rely on rules of whatever edition they are using to play. The newest edition is 5th edition. There are lots of places to check out people playing the game. Critical Role on UA-cam's Geek and Sundry is one of the more popular outlets where you can watch game play, but there are plenty of great videos out there of different games. Ultimately, it's a game where you get together with other people and play through fantasy adventures, which you all interact and form with each other. It's a fun hobby.
It's not a board game, and it's really well known in pop culture. I'm not making fun of you or anything; I just find it strange that you've never heard of it lol.
its pretty much like you and your friends make a great story of adventure together where literally only your imagination is the limit.and you gotta roll dice and shit for every "special action" (attacks, specific actions relating to skills, etc) its really fun if you have an open and creative mind

That's a sound logical theory, but we're talking about creatures of elemental chaos (of which there is incomplete and fluctuating lore) in limbo.
For example, we don't know how permanent death is for a death slaad, limbo might copy existing beings occasionally through some means (perhaps including space-time shenanigans), more powerful slaad (or the spawning stone might be able to create death slaad through some unknown method, or maybe the method of creating death slaad used to not require their death but now does because chaos (meaning that death slaad are constantly decreasing _currently_)
...and those are just some possibilities that make sense in an orderly logical way.
What if two grey Slaadi share the meat of a single Death Slaad ?
I though it was a coincidence that you and web DM did similar things so close to each other but its awesome you watch them too. I think a cool creature to do a video like this on would be Hags and the varieties there of. Keep up the awesome work man.
Teach us about undeads!
Undead lords. Vampires, Wights, so on.
Educate me! :D
And now I'm terrified of slaads. Now I have to lay this information on my DM. But this video has given me insight on another one of D&D's creatures, thank you mrrhexx
Do the secrets of mimics!
Thank you for this video about the Slaad, it gave me a sh*tton of ideas for my campain.
So bad, I don't like the idea of "A turns into B, then into C, then into D".
What do you think of this:
- Green slad --> grey slaad with a ritual
- Red/Green slad --> another type of slaad if many green or grey slaad make a ritual together.
And that's it. Keep it simple.
Thanks again for your videos, it's really an amazing work !
7:52 creepy
your talk about limbo and how it works gives me a fantastic idea.
Pepe is a slaad, but he is a Life Slaad. The chaotic good variant.
I had the planar handbook and it had the Slaad as PC in it. I fell in love with them
chaos ? sounds like heresy
DARK heresy?
cheeky reference to a similar game to D&D
coughexterminatuscough
Love your voice for this. I've already binged all your videos and would pretty much like any subject... but perhaps on the various types of undead, or more obscure elemental creatures.
Oh man... first.
I've always wanted to do that
MrCreepyPasta
Our secret pleasure
MrCreepyPasta Ha I'm 670th
Ha! Always nice to see a random UA-camr I'm subscribed to comment on a video I'm watching.
MrCreepyPasta I can't believe it is you wow
Wait, if the only way to make a death slad is through the death of another death slad, but the requirement to advance further is just time, then the death slads would eventually go extinct.
Welcome to Innsmouth!!
I think this is where mind flayers will eventually evolve from
when the orb crupts even more
Oí, why is there an oblivion stone in this video XD
14:37... just going to try and sneak Harry Dresden past us huh???
My mans making the rounds everywhere.
9:58
GOOD LORD WHAT HAPPENED TO HER ARM!!!!!!!!!
What do you mean
I would love to see a video about the different realms of the DnD lore! That would be awesome!
green slaad gets a pokemon evolution
Love this series you're doing, man. Keep it up! And thanks for the extra long secrets vid!
How was the first Death Slaad made?
Jeffery Bryski Jr probably the spawning stone did it
4:50 how about "Semi-Perfect Slaad" ? ("Wait until I reach my ultimate form!")
Please, make my comment come true. Literally after years. Please tell me, what is the name of the song at 17:00?
For a few seconds I thought they were called salads.
"I'd like a death salad please"
I will forever roleplay slaad with slav accents and mannerism.
"Ey bylat!" *Drinks vodak. "You havve seen red comrade pig slaad here yes?" *cue hard bass*
MrRhexx' D&D Lore in summary:
Every, I mean EVERY creature is the most powerful and unimaginably dangerous. Period.
Hey you should do some videos on the Realms of DnD
DUDE, if you made a video about the great wheel cosmology model, that would be awesome to learn about each different world
What if you went to limbo and imagined you were human again and not slaad?
more dnd lore FeelsGoodMan this is maybe one of the best series ever
What if a blue slaad hits a blue one, or a red a red, or green- you get the point
Nothing, I would imagine. Or alien incest, and you magically get a white slaad. One of the two.
If a blue Slaad hits a blue Slaad, you still get a red Slaad and vice versa. Green is the only one that has no clear indicator of what it makes, but that's fine because chaos can just do what it wants.
Really interesting! Can tell your heart is really in this atm
I hands down think you are way better then webdm
Nothing about control gems?
The 5e monster manual includes a Slaad variant (meaning it's not 100% canon?) that has a gem in it's head, put there by the spawning stone. If removed, the holder can command the Slaad to do whatever they like.
One read is that the Slaads are Limbo's way of getting rid of the spawning stone, sending it out to other realms piece by piece. It could also be that Primus recognises the need for cosmic ballance and Slaads are part of a plan to spread chaotic creatures that he could switch off if he wanted to.
I wanted to put it in but i ran out of time. I'll probably touch on that on a future episode.
is this game a board game cause I can't find game play
@Crigon
It's a table top RPG that can be played in different ways.
Bruh is the seriously the first time you've ever heard of D&D? It's the cornerstone of modern fantasy RPG's!
Locke i don't really play board games
It's not a board game, and it's really well known in pop culture. I'm not making fun of you or anything; I just find it strange that you've never heard of it lol.
its pretty much like you and your friends make a great story of adventure together where literally only your imagination is the limit.and you gotta roll dice and shit for every "special action" (attacks, specific actions relating to skills, etc) its really fun if you have an open and creative mind
Dude you should be a rapper, "this ability to manipulate limbo" was total fire
Lolth please :) Want to learn about her
I’ve updated Jacob’s Well from Dragon Magazine to use as an adventure for one of my players to develop their backstory/secret for Rime of the Frost Maiden.
I was sitting there thinking that Slaads were pretty cool...
Until you told me that the writers ripped off of Alien
Well, Slaad first appeared in 1981, while Aliens wasn't until 1986. So not really a ripoff.
Which Alien movie, Aliens (1986) is the sequel to Alien released in 1979
True, and that is why I probably shouldn't try to look up dates way too late at night. XD
I would be terrified to have you as a DM simply because of the seemingly infinite amount of lore you keep.
FYI, plural of Slaad is Slaadi, not Slaads. They are among my favorite creatures, and so i really appreciate this vid :)
There's also White slaads and black slaads
3rd and 3.5 Edition they're considered Epic Level monsters a CR higher than 20
