    Hey! St. Petersburg, represent!
I wished I'd found this when I was rebuilding my MS Protege last year. It was my first serious project car, and honestly I feel like I picked a good one. I wasn't feeling confident enough to pull the pistons or anything off the junkyard block I swapped into it to replace the blown engine from the previous owner. To my detriment too, got it together and the damn thing is burning oil around the rings. Hoping she'll last another year or so as a daily until I have the space to do a full teardown and upgrade the internals.

Good to see the videos from you. I am driving a zm 1.6. It’s really good and reliable daily car with affordable parts.
I heard that it’s the oil pump in FSDE causing the oil consumption problem.

Blowby, Check the PCV line to the throttle body to see if oil is getting sucked in there. That's where you run an oil catch can. Also, try 10w30 9r 40.Maybe it's got too many niles for 5 weight.....go to 10.

Shout out to the Supertech oil, I've used other name brand oils in the past but my high mileage turbo build seems to like the Supertech high milage in that it consumes it the slowest. I've tried other brands and weights but the 5w-30 hm does the best in this case. It also gets worse when using penzoil or Valvoline which were my typical go to.
I consume about a qt of oil every 1000 miles, this was expected with this engine as it was a rush rebuild with a 230k mile (at the time) bottom end and a refreshed head. Noticed worn cylinder walls when putting the engine together so I wasn't expecting much but here we are, just over a year later and 20k miles and oil consumption has stayed consistent. This was a hasty experimental rebuild pushing about 10-12psi on the stock turbo setup and I just want to see how long the engine will last until consumption gets worse. The car still returns 28-29mpg so I'll top off till it dies.
To be fair I also suspect the turbo that's on it is also starting to push oil but this could also be the blow by with the worn cylinder walls. Catch can helps but fills frequently enough that I know it has a blow by problem.

Also I am curious, have you checked your knock sensor on some of these rebuilds? The original ones typically ooze out all of their fluid causing the car to run even more rich and thin out the oil even further. I recommend people changing to a good new japan made knock sensor when chasing bad mpg issues.
With the stock Mazdaspeed protege ecu setup it will typically dump fuel after detecting knock under boost and a lot of fuel ends up in the oil, breaking it down leading to oiling issues. Similar to what the turbo Honda engines were seeing with the thinner oils and turbo diluting the oil.
Also in a previous video you mentioned the msp and normal protege ecus being the same, they are indeed different and the msp ecu is much much much worse with fueling..

Lastly blue stuff in the pick up is likely from a Felpro valve cover gasket. I tell customers and owners avoid anything Felpro for these cars unless its intake and exhaust manifold gaskets or maybe valve stem seals.. everything else from Felpro is terrible for these cars, specially those valve covers gaskets (most common at part stores) and shit cam and crank seals made by National or Felpro.. I've seen many FS engines oil starve because of Felpro products.
I wonder if some of the blue gasket material clogged some oil passages in the past on that engine.

@@WillJacksonNW 1. Yes I have replaced the knock sensor on my protege to improve fuel economy but it did not help. It did improve, at the time, the idle quality...not sure what that was about.
      2. I ASSUME at some point b4 I got the car that someone used Felpro gaskets in it. But when I got it at 144K there were no blue gaskets in the engine. Evidently at some point they were there.
      3. Im sure the fuel mapping for the MSP and standard protege may differ slightly. As far as igintion I would say it is the same. Many turbo engines would run a standard ignition map rather than one that is advanced to prevent detonation issues. This is why it is very difficult ro tune these ECUs. A piggy back is the only way and only one that I know of will work, the Split Second AFR piggy back. The MP3 ecu, according to my knowlege, is the only one that came with some decent advanced timing maps. You can even hear it in the idle characteristics of the car when u plug one up.
      4. Yes despite its cheap price, SUPERTECH oil is actually an very good oil sold at walmart. You nearly cant go wrong with this oil.

@@cesarfitoria2879 My battery of choice has been AC DELCO for the last 2.5 years. Right now I have the AC DELCO 35PS 640CCA battery in my Protege. Problem free. AC DELCO makes excellent batteries. I used to use Interstate but these would often fail prematurely, even in other cars. When I worked for the Independent repair facility, we used Interstate in all the BMWs and Mercedes cars and they just didn't hold up. We switched to AC Delco and never had a failure after that so I switched as well. You can get the battery from most local parts stores, you have to request it and have it ordered though as it is not on the shelf.

Mmmmm chunky engine oil. Sucks hearing that sound. My 745t is going through oil but it's a turbo and sat for 15 years. The oil consumption is actually getting better. I think the piston rings just needed some time to reseat after sitting for so long. I've been daily driving it for the past few months and it's been running great all while averaging 19mpg with plenty of spirited driving. I'm in the process of moving and will be resuming videos within the next month. You should get an oil cooler from a 740 or 940 turbo. They are a pretty good size and easy to remove at a junkyard fairly quick. I think I have a spare laying around if you're interested. Just needs to be cleaned up and painted.

  • @sugarbombs6884

I replaced the valve stem seals in my SP20 but in the process disturbed the piston rings and it's blowing smoke even worse then before, gonna try a few different oils, I've been using magnatec 10w40 and I'm gonna try GTX 5w30 and 20w50. Cars really needs a new engine but gonna see how long this one will last 🤣

Superb video. When I had bought my Protege5 initially, it went through all that you’ve described plus smoke on startup. I swear, owning this thing has been a case study on bad engine designs lol
I’ve now gone on to replace my engine with a JDM swap. All works as it should. Only thing I notice now is soot build up out the exhaust pipe. Not burning an ounce of oil but it seems to get coated back there. Any ideas? Could it be running rich? Or should I have a look at the EGR system? Thanks and keep up the good work!

    • @RetrocarStyle
      @RetrocarStyle 2 роки тому

Yes the Protege ECU will continue to run rich. The high compression engine moves way more air so it does a better job at burning the rich fuel mixtures. In fact it might get worse but I planned on fiddling with an AFR controler and wanted to post the results of my findings in a future episode.
