For anybody just watching this and you use your camera for recording events video where there is usually very loud music and loud noise.. Please leave your audio at "Auto" and not "Manual". Your camera can easily prevent audio peaking when it is at auto because it can easily recognize when the sound is too loud and then help reduce audio peaking. Putting it in manual means the camera will simply follow your order in the level you have set it. If the music or audio coming in is too loud, that is a big recipe for audio peaking disaster. So if you shoot events, never leave the audio at manual. I have been burned several times for setting the audio to manual.
Good advice for events. I set the audio to manual only when I shoot interviews with a lavalier for better audio. Otherwise auto all the way. Too many situations when the audio is changing from high to low.

Just brought a Canon R7 today with Canon 16mm for videos and shootings in a small space. I sold Canon M6 MarkII. I mostly shoot/video indoors of my acrylic paintings. The settings are very beneficial. Correct me, I'd like to set for indoor to 5600K because I have a pair of lights that is 6500K.

You are very welcome. I would probably set the frame rate to 30fps and shutter to 1/60. I would turn Log shooting off and use one of the picture profiles.
I don't know why I can't find any videos of canon r7 ever since it got released, I'm glad you did some setup and after videos. I actually got it for UA-cam videos. Is there anything special that needs to be done for indoor talking head youtube videos setup?

I can certainly see an advantage for stills but not sure for video? Great tutorial. I don't think he says it, although it's shown in the pics, you need to set your cam to "M" mode prior to doing these. Otherwise a few of the options might be unavailable. I would also recommend going through all these, then saving them to one of the Custom Modes, C1, C2, or C3 and make sure you set the custom mode to "NOT" save any changes you make to the mode (unless of course you go in and manually save them). Also, if you use this for a still camera, it's also worthwhile to go through the settings with it in photo mode prior to saving. That way when you turn the dial to that custom mode it's all set for either video or photos.

It's different. Every camera has a base ISO for shooting in their log profile. This gives you maximum dynamic range in that log profile. It's different if you are shooting photo or even video with a non-log profile.
Hi Josh, I am using canon R7 and I want my photonames start with IMG_ and videos start with VI_ HOWEVER what I try in "yellow menu 1" and saving it to C1 photo or video . . . . is doesn't work. I always keep my last setting . . . . Any ideas on this ???

anyone else have this issue? when i plug in an external microphone.. the camera disables the audio noise reduction option (attenuator)? Ive been using external mics and the attenuator option for years on the 60d, 70d, 80d 90d. but the R7 wont allow it?

There's one thing I have never seen in any of the videos for doing video on the R7 and that's what to set the shutter to. By that I mean mechanical, first curtain or full electronic shutter. What should be used? And does this change the shutter for still photography?
I have a weird issue with my R7 while shooting with all of the same settings you presented in this video. At 24 fps with a shutter speed of 50 I'm getting choppy motion when I play the Quicktime video on my computer. Any idea what is causing that? Video looks fine when I play it on the camera.

Wow! I can't believe you can't record while outputing to both HDMI and LED. This makes it completely unusable as a streaming camera. Looks like I have to keep looking for my B-Cam.

I really enjoyed the video man. I just picked up the r7 today, and whenever I try to play back a log 3 (MP4) file in VLC it won't play properly. No video or choppy. When I load into Davinci it only loads the audio. HOWEVER, if I turn off log 3, it works fine. This is very frustrating, as I've just purchased this and plan to shoot log. Any advice/experience? Anyone else? PLEASE HELP if possible!

Thanks for the video! Sadly this doesn't work for me. Somehow my menu isn't that extended as yours.. It only has 5 icons and for example, the first icon, the camera, only goes to number 6. I don't know why... Do you know how to fix this?

I have an R7 and a Shinobi and a Ninja V but they do not display my camera on either no matter which one i connect it to. is there a setting i need to change? or is this camera not compatible? i seee you used a ninja v so i should be able to. I'm struggling lol
It really depends on everything else that is involved. Other cameras, lenses, what you are shooting, crew size, etc. I have never used a R6 so I can't comment too much on it.

Seven years ago BizJournals made it mandatory for their photographers to shoot video interviews as well as portraits. I’ve been shooting on Canon since the original 5D. I was about to upgrade to the canon R5 but was spooked by all the overheating. I switched to Sony and now I’m switching back. I understand for many that’s Sony works for them but color grading is an absolute nightmare the auto focus system is junk coming from Shooting Canon for over 20 years. Currently on order I have a C70 and R5C. I need a back up camera in case I have issues on a photo shoot with the R5C. Most of the video work I do is for short form two cam; by myself. I currently have around five clients where I bring in a first AC and grip. And in the last three years I do 2 to 3 jobs a year as a DP with a director but we’ve pretty much always rent all our gear for that. I’m positive this Director will be happy that I’ve upgraded my camera system. Thanks again! I just watched your comprehensive video on the R7 graded next to that R5C. Really good stuff man, you’re creating content that’s pretty original. 🙌🏼
Good day, it says on the spec sheet that the eos r7 has two audio recording settings: MP4: 2-Channel AAC Audio & MP4: 2-Channel LPCM Audio. Is there a way to choose between MP4: 2-Channel AAC Audio & MP4: 2-Channel LPCM Audio while recording?
So many videos I can't find about this camera like testing the Auto-Level feature as well as the 'lossless' digital zoom. Can you make a video showcasing these?
Thanks Josh, great video but I'm still struggling and need to know how to setup the R7 ISO when not shooting video in CLOG. I am constantly riding the ISO for video when shooting different shots and sometimes get overexposed/underexposed. I appreciate any help!
OMG Josh, the R7 just broke my heart. I was using ECAMM with the R7 and it looks HORRIBLE. Lagging, even the Blackmagic looked loads better. Did you have the same issues? I could have sworn you were streaming the R7 as your B Cam.
If I using this camera in combination with the Ninja V ( because of the ProRes Codec ) and I set the 4K Fine option will it output this setting to the Ninja V also?
Hey...you mentioned that your Atomos Ninja V was flickering when trying to record with the R7. I am experiencing the same thing. I have changed cables and used other Ninja V's and I am still getting the same warning show up on the Ninja that the recording stopped and restarted. I'm wounding if this is an issue with the HDMI port on the R7. What do you think? Are you still experiencing this issue?

@@Josh_Sattin If Peripheral Illumination Correction is enabled, you see a crazy amount of noise in Clog3. That was the issue. You need to turn it off. FYI. And yeah been doing this for 10 years and know how to expose properly. I know what noise is...lol.
I notice when you show the recording options for 4K fine your camera shows 29 or 23 (30 or 24). On my R7 I can only see 25fps. How can I change this to see the options you have? Thanks Don
Great video. Have seen all you videos and I love the tip on Meike adapter with the variable filter in some other video. Have you tried if you really can save video settings on C1-C3? Like having 4K30 on C1 and 4K60crop on C2 ... ? It was possible on 90D and R, but is is not on R6. How is it on R7?

I've never used a R6 and I don't do much photography. That being said, I would probably take the R7 over the R6 for video since the R6 overheats quickly with 4K recording. If you do a lot of photography then you might prefer the full frame sensor of the R6.

Thanks for showing and sharing menu settings with us. I have a few questions: 1 Can you record video on both cards as a back-up ? 2 Can you magnifying the image to check focus during recording ? Is the histogram still disappearing when you press record button ?
You're welcome. Yes, you can record to both cards at the same time. You can not magnify the image with recording and the histogram disappears when you press record.
The three custom modes C1 C2 C3 are to recall a set of settings in the camera. You can’t set the record button to C1 C2 or C3. I think that’s what you are asking.
@@Josh_Sattin Thank you so much for your answer. I found the following in manual: "You can also record movies with the power switch set to < ON >. In this case, operation corresponds to < (A+) > when the Mode dial is set to < A+ >. When the Mode dial is set to an option other than < A+; >, operation corresponds to < P>." A+ -> The camera detects the type of scene and sets all settings accordingly. P -> Exposure is controlled automatically to suit the brightness.

You're welcome! I generally am shooting UA-cam videos, documentary type stuff and some client work, but never sports. The only things I would probably tweak for sports would be some of the autofocus settings to make them more reactive.

Good tutorial, but it's important to mention that sometimes you want to shoot in 4k, but not in C-log or with HDR on. The reason for that is that PCs don't support 4:2:2 decoding (only Macs do). On a PC, editing 4:2:2 is a total nightmare and it requires reencoding or proxies. Personally, if I get an R camera, I'd still shoot in 8bit 4k 4:2:0 just because I have a PC. When and if I upgrade to a Mac, then I'd move to 10bit 4:2:2 C-Log.

Could be your computer if it's older or slower. The codecs in these Canon cameras can be tough sometimes.

If the crop factor normally for the APSC sensor of the R7 is 1.6x, what will be the total crop factor if I am shooting at the 4K crop mode please.

Yes, leave that setting off. Use a microphone with a deadcat.

I wish canon would allow the histogram display to remain on while recording otherwise you need to use an external monitor with exposure tools.

I understand for many that’s Sony works for them but color grading is an absolute nightmare the auto focus system is junk coming from Shooting Canon for over 20 years. Currently on order I have a C70 and R5C. I need a back up camera in case I have issues on a photo shoot with the R5C. Most of the video work I do is for short form two cam; by myself. I currently have around five clients where I bring in a first AC and grip. And in the last three years I do 2 to 3 jobs a year as a DP with a director but we’ve pretty much always rent all our gear for that. I’m positive this Director will be happy that I’ve upgraded my camera system. Thanks again! I just watched your comprehensive video on the R7 graded next to that R5C. Really good stuff man, you’re creating content that’s pretty original. 🙌🏼
I would probably recommend the R5 in your situation for a backup photo camera to the R5C since they are identical in photo mode.

Good day, it says on the spec sheet that the eos r7 has two audio recording settings: MP4: 2-Channel AAC Audio & MP4: 2-Channel LPCM Audio. Is there a way to choose between MP4: 2-Channel AAC Audio & MP4: 2-Channel LPCM Audio while recording?

Thanks Josh, great video but I'm still struggling and need to know how to setup the R7 ISO when not shooting video in CLOG. I am constantly riding the ISO for video when shooting different shots and sometimes get overexposed/underexposed. I appreciate any help!

OMG Josh, the R7 just broke my heart. I was using ECAMM with the R7 and it looks HORRIBLE. Lagging, even the Blackmagic looked loads better. Did you have the same issues? I could have sworn you were streaming the R7 as your B Cam.

If I using this camera in combination with the Ninja V ( because of the ProRes Codec ) and I set the 4K Fine option will it output this setting to the Ninja V also?
Hey...you mentioned that your Atomos Ninja V was flickering when trying to record with the R7. I am experiencing the same thing. I have changed cables and used other Ninja V's and I am still getting the same warning show up on the Ninja that the recording stopped and restarted. I'm wounding if this is an issue with the HDMI port on the R7. What do you think? Are you still experiencing this issue?
This was from changing recording formats and settings in the camera. It would start and stop the recording.

Thanks for the video. As I understand things the settings you describe here do not affect the settings for stills correct? Two separate sets of settings? What do you use for color grading clog 3? That's something that would have helped if you had mentioned what you use.

Hey Josh, When I put the camera in Clog3, I'm seeing a terrible amount of noise on the camera screen. Any way to fix this?

@@Josh_Sattin If Peripheral Illumination Correction is enabled, you see a crazy amount of noise in Clog3. That was the issue. You need to turn it off. FYI. And yeah been doing this for 10 years and know how to expose properly. I know what noise is...lol.

I notice when you show the recording options for 4K fine your camera shows 29 or 23 (30 or 24). On my R7 I can only see 25fps. How can I change this to see the options you have? Thanks Don
You are in PAL mode and need to change it to NTSC. Menu -> Wrench -> 2 -> Video system -> NTSC

Have you tried if you really can save video settings on C1-C3? Like having 4K30 on C1 and 4K60crop on C2 ... ? It was possible on 90D and R, but is is not on R6. How is it on R7?

Hi Johs, do you know if the R7 can drive a follow focus to use its magic autofocus on manual high end cine lenses ?
I am not aware of a way to have the R7 do that. I know that DJI has their Raven Eye system that can do that though.

A very informative and educational video. Well explained in layman's terms!! Just bought an R7 to replace my Canon Legria for video. How does it work with green screen? Have you done a specific video for shooting video using a green screen?

Thanks for the tutorial. How would you compare the R7 Photo/Video to the R6 ff camera?
I've never used a R6 and I don't do much photography. That being said, I would probably take the R7 over the R6 for video since the R6 overheats quickly with 4K recording. If you do a lot of photography then you might prefer the full frame sensor of the R6.

You might be in photo mode and not video mode.

You're welcome. Yes, you can record to both cards at the same time. You can not magnify the image with recording and the histogram disappears when you press record.

The three custom modes C1 C2 C3 are to recall a set of settings in the camera. You can’t set the record button to C1 C2 or C3. I think that’s what you are asking.

"You can also record movies with the power switch set to < ON >.
In this case, operation corresponds to < (A+) > when the Mode dial is set to < A+ >. When the Mode dial is set to an option other than < A+; >, operation corresponds to < P>."
A+ -> The camera detects the type of scene and sets all settings accordingly.
P -> Exposure is controlled automatically to suit the brightness.
When you connect an external monitor can you still use the internal screen?

You're welcome! I generally am shooting UA-cam videos, documentary type stuff and some client work, but never sports. The only things I would probably tweak for sports would be some of the autofocus settings to make them more reactive.

Good tutorial, but it's important to mention that sometimes you want to shoot in 4k, but not in C-log or with HDR on. The reason for that is that PCs don't support 4:2:2 decoding (only Macs do). On a PC, editing 4:2:2 is a total nightmare and it requires reencoding or proxies. Personally, if I get an R camera, I'd still shoot in 8bit 4k 4:2:0 just because I have a PC. When and if I upgrade to a Mac, then I'd move to 10bit 4:2:2 C-Log.
