I commented on this video 11 years ago when I was learning how to play the guitar and dreamed of playing this guitar solo. Happy to say that 11 years later I am able to play this solo. This video was crucial. Learning how to play the solo from the person who wrote it was an amazing experience. Of course I am not able to play anywhere nearly as well as Don, but I am proud of how much I have achieved in the past 11 years. This video alone really helped to improve my guitar skills. Things like vibrato, ghost notes, sliding and bending. Watching the slowed down version allowed me to study how the song was played and copy it. I’m now 26 years old. And my 15 year old self thanks you for sharing this incredible video!
Don, Thank you! How awesome it is that you put it out there for us to see and hear. I just wish I had one once of your talent. I am 53 yrs old and trying to learn the guitar. I gotta a long way to go, but I just wanted you to feel my appreciation for sharing your gift to others.
What an incredibly generous man. So creative and such a guitar genius, responsible for so much of the Eagles sound. Thanks for posting this and for being You.
It's been said before that he is so generous in spirit. I started to learn this solo and it made me realise just how complex and beautiful it is. I've heard him play on acoustic, double-neck SG and the Les Paul but he always makes it look effortless. A true musical genius and so humble.
There is nothing better in the world when the guitarist who made a song/riff famous - does a lesson and demo on it. This is close to the best I've seen!
Great to see someone like Don Felder actually showing us how to play.. Rest of them you have to pay to join their fan club before they will show you anything. Thanks Don from Scotland
I use UA-cam all the time to learn new songs and licks. Thanks, Don Felder, for being so generous with your time and talent to show us your leads for this great, classic song!
Really appreciate that Don has given his time on this - a lesson from the world's best is priceless ! The clarity and precision here is mind blowing. Thank you Don.
Once I got done salivating over that Les Paul I realized what a great tutorial Don offered here. Is that a AAAAAAAA x10 Les Paul top? I can't get over it....
I never get tired of hearing Don Felder play this even though I've heard it 10,000 times. The only thing better than this video is when he plays it with Joe Walsh. Otherwise very few guitarists can play this right. It's an amazing achievement in the art of rock lead guitar.
how fortunate are we to get a personal guitar lesson from a legend in our time. thank don for taking time out to show us hacks your techniques. forever indebted!
I always thought this was one of the most creative and innovative solo's of all time. It blew me away the first time I heard it. I don't think it's ever been bettered in my humble opinion. It still gives me goose bumps.
The seventies rock bands really featured a lot of these kinds of extended melodic solos usually split up between two or three axemen trading licks or doubling up on harmonies etc. Younger players should also check out bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd,The Little River Band,Wishbone Ash,The Allman Brothers(of course)and Thin Lizzy among others to hear more of those beautifully constructed, powerful, almost "cinematic" solos. Also "Layla era" Clapton trading licks with Duane Allman is guitar Gold.
Thanks Don. I really appreciate you took the time to do this for us. Not only showing us the great solo but also the reasoning and recording history behind it.
Although I've heard hotel california ten thousands time, I'm amazed by this lesson with mythic Don Felder, which kind of motivating me to start the guitar, as it seems so easy with him, but bearing in mind that perhaps no other human can render hotel california like that. Each time Don Felder is proudly playing Hotel California at the guitar, he proves he is Mr Hotel California music creator/master.
Well, you to have to think of this sort of people: "hey, here is a cup of coffee for you, right as you like!". "No, I like tea now!". "Ok, ok, here is your tea". "No! I like... don't know what I like... I hate everything, myself too".
Don is why the Eagles existed without him they're lame he should start a band called Felders Falcons or something.......you are the KING OF TASTE when I hear Eagles songs I think of you... not those two LUGNUTS .........THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HARD WORK .. DON
Felix Burke ph and Glen Frey doesn't have an Ego hmmm , Don Henley , he has no ego really !! I'll tell you what , they should have stuck with Bernie Leadon then , for that matter all they nee d was Joe Walsh with Bernie and " presto " !!1 no the issue was " Fingers Felder " is a n excellent technical and spontaneous player , there is the issue !!!! Joe Walsh evem admitted that he was intimidated frey and Henley with their sound writting ! ! Randy Meisner , Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit were all intimidated by Frey and Henley , Felder could give a shit !!!!! If Felder was so dispensible than why ask him to remain in the band for starters , after all Glenn " I'm the leader and massively egotistical scum bag Frey is such an " iconic guitarist as we all know right !
Felix Burke Eagles songs co-written by Don Felder "Visions" from One of These Nights (written by Don Felder & Don Henley) "Too Many Hands" from One of These Nights (written by Don Felder & Randy Meisner) "Victim of Love" from Hotel California (written by Don Felder & Don Henley, Glenn Frey, and J. Souther) "Hotel California" from Hotel California (written by Don Felder & with Henley/Frey) "The Disco Strangler" from The Long Run (written by Don Felder & with Henley/Frey) "Those Shoes" from The Long Run (written by Don Felder & with Henley/Frey) No doubt there are far more that he isn't even given credit for really or maybe his ideas were " marginalized " ! !!!!!!

As an eternal guitar student, I am so happy so learn that epic solo from the master himself. You are a legend, thank you very very much to share the right way to play that piece of rock history.
After watching the documentary of The History Of the Eagles I've lost every ounce of respect I ever had for Glen Frey and what little I hold for Henley isn't much! I do give those two credit for getting Joe Walsh back and away from Deaths door but what they did to Don Felder was a crime! In the Movie Frey and Henley Bitched about how Geffen records Screwed them which David, the POS of slime he is did but, what Geffen did to the Eagles is in no way comparable to what the Eagles did to one of the greatest guitarists ever, Don Felder. It was a Crime!
Hawkeye } The history of the Eagles… Part one, part two It’s a 2013 documentary. Just as I said in my post… The history of the Eagles. We have some thing nowadays it’s called Google?
I think one reason for why so many musicians hesitate or aren't interested in giving lessons teaching how to play their songs, is that it's very easy to come across as being a pompous, self-centered prick. Not Don, though! :)
DoofsterDan The guy who got kicked out of the eagles. FYI. But not because he was a bad guitarist or a bad bandmate but because Henley was such a prick.
Did u see docunentry. The got mad at felder because he wasn't into a politician they actually cussed him out on stage after ,and he wanted to sing 1 song.they said no way with all those albums if Felder wanted to sing 1 song, let him ..it wouldn't have a made a difference.
Don Felder. Que alegria ter uma aula de guitarra com você. Nunca esqueço a música Hotel California. Sucesso para a vida toda. Don Felder. What a joy to have a guitar lesson with you. Never forget the song Hotel California. Success for life.
It's a real shame the way Frey and Henley did this guy. He wrote the biggest hit ever for the Eagles and they wanted to pay him less than they were getting? I mean, Jesus, you can argue who's the bigger star but this was a group and without Felder they wouldn't have had Hotel California. Besides, haven't Frey and Henley made enough money already? They just come off looking like greedy, pompous aholes.
Dude, go and watch the history of the Eagles, my take is they were a failing band before Felder and Walsh showed up. Once they got big Frey and Henley wanted to get rid of everyone but themselves so they wouldn't have to share profits. Felder isn't worth millions because he was a member of the Eagles, he's worth millions because he wrote one of the best musical masterpieces of all time with Hotel California. Henley wrote the words, and the drum beats. Felder wrote the intro, most of the solo, the rhythm and bass lines. Life in the fast lane came out of an exercise that Walsh used to loosen up. History wise Felder and Walsh will be forever known as two of the best guitarists. Henley and Frey will not be known as the best anything. Vocals are good, but not the best. Drums are good but not the best, Frey's playing mediocre at best.
***** im dumb as fuck ? You cant even understand a simple thing. Don Felder wrote the music for this song, expect the words thats 90% of the song. Writing words for song are way easier then writing the melody.
Donald Gray yes the under dogs of this world in all walks of life make the ones in charge look like gods. so the more talented an under dog is in a company or a band the better he makes his leaders/owners look. But credit also has to go to don and glenn for their role in starting the band cause I know its hard as hell to start a business of any kind and support yourself as well, while when felder came along in the knick of time and capitalized on what don and glenn had started the times were changing from folk to rock and had not felder came along the eagles may have faded away with "take it easy", and Bernie did as far as he could, so it would be fair to say that felder came in the knick of time to excel the eagles to what we have today. like a boost and he deserves his part as well as don and glenn for starting the band, because when they invited him as 1/5 of the band proves they seen something in felder and that maybe they were becoming desperate for that boost the band needed to stay in the game, and they were smart enough to capitalize on felder. so with all that's been I think they all needed each other. Felder was meek while don and glenn are crude, but you have to have crude leaders in this world other wise the crude ones will run all over the meek ones but leaders should not think of themselves as the greater one. Because of felder's contribution, more people listen to the less popular songs that the eagles created before felder and/or those who would not have even listened to the eagles songs before felder are now compelled to listen to the early eagles so I think felder deserves still 1/5 rights
I think you`re right , Don Felder is the Man Who makes the song so Popular , its really a shame that they do it this way . When i see Don Playing this song live i KNOW it comes from his hands, Brain & HEART ! A Nice Guy with really great Guitar skills , i Like his Songs
Look, nobody is saying that Henley and Frey are not valuable. However, the problem was that when Felder joined the band they were all equal partners in Eagles Ltd. That's why Frey and Henley settled with Felder: He was fracking right. And Felder is a nice guy. Just listen to him and read the things he's written. He just comes off as a genuine person. Frey and Henley on the other hand...
One, if not the most favourite guitar solos I've ever heard and had the pleasure to play. It took me a long time to learn it and some things I still did differently, but it gave em a high every time I played it or listened to it and it still does! The great guitar work was one of the things that drew me to the Eagles right from the start. It gave me goosebumps! LOL!
To me the song is a stroke of genius. It evokes a stony Twilight Zone-ish dreamy mysterious allegory of that crazy state and state of mind we call California. One of the Top Ten Songs in the past 60 years.
The whole song is killer good and one of my all time favourite tunes with such tasteful guitar playing throughout--like a huge rock lesson all rolled into one--I love it!
This video (and after all this time) proves again the importance of Don Felder in making the legacy of the Eagles as a band. When I hear his playing I feel the original spirit of Hotel California. Thanks a lot to Guitar World for making this demonstration possible by the architect himself.

This video alone really helped to improve my guitar skills. Things like vibrato, ghost notes, sliding and bending. Watching the slowed down version allowed me to study how the song was played and copy it.
I’m now 26 years old. And my 15 year old self thanks you for sharing this incredible video!
One of the most beautiful flame-tops ever
Yes it's real purdy
his flametop compares to my guitar
Is it a 59? I’m sure I read someplace that he owns one.
One of the most musical solo's ever recorded!
Man that gibby sounds thick and great.....beautiful to boot!
Thanks for a great lesson.
Wonderful! Just wonderful.
Thank you Mr Felder Sir. Not just for this video, but for your contribution to music in general.
Don, Thank you! How awesome it is that you put it out there for us to see and hear. I just wish I had one once of your talent. I am 53 yrs old and trying to learn the guitar. I gotta a long way to go, but I just wanted you to feel my appreciation for sharing your gift to others.
Timeless solo , a Classic Masterpiece !
Thankful for Felder
What an incredibly generous man. So creative and such a guitar genius, responsible for so much of the Eagles sound. Thanks for posting this and for being You.
I just met him les than 2 weeks ago at a small event in Columbus Indiana ' he's so humble and such an awesome guy to talk to !
Sounds just like my buddy Albert Lee
How lucky we are to be able to watch that!
The 162 dislikes was from Don Henley
fahd s 😂
ha ha correct!!
And Glenn Fry
@@colonelbuendias It's Frey...and he's dead, so he'd struggle press anything with his dirty bone finger.
😂😂😂😂
Never heard any solo better than this song ever... full of dynamic..perfect tone..and combination 2 guitar make it even better....
I like Don's version of Extra Slow Motion........ The guy is a genius
It's been said before that he is so generous in spirit. I started to learn this solo and it made me realise just how complex and beautiful it is. I've heard him play on acoustic, double-neck SG and the Les Paul but he always makes it look effortless. A true musical genius and so humble.
Walsh seems to get the attention, but Felder was to the the architect of the guitar parts. One of these Nights, such a beautiful solo as well
john wei i
One of these Nights - to me - in the top ten guitar solo's of any rock era
There is nothing better in the world when the guitarist who made a song/riff famous - does a lesson and demo on it. This is close to the best I've seen!
Great to see someone like Don Felder actually showing us how to play..
Rest of them you have to pay to join their fan club before they will show you anything.
Thanks Don from Scotland
I use UA-cam all the time to learn new songs and licks. Thanks, Don Felder, for being so generous with your time and talent to show us your leads for this great, classic song!
Thanks for doing this Don! You are one of the most classiest and tasteful players of all time!
Really appreciate that Don has given his time on this - a lesson from the world's best is priceless ! The clarity and precision here is mind blowing. Thank you Don.
This is great seeing an original artist show you how they played their classic stuff.
A free guitar lesson from Don Felder himself😳!....unbelievable! This is unique...historic...what a fabulous post. Many Thanks.
Don Felder was my first inspiration to start to play the Guitar, thanks for that, the music is life and I discovered by The Eagles.
Beautiful guitar and beautiful song. I never would have picked this off the record without this video for help. Thank you Mr. Felder.
Once I got done salivating over that Les Paul I realized what a great tutorial Don offered here. Is that a AAAAAAAA x10 Les Paul top? I can't get over it....
Agreed...Great tutorial but I can't quit staring at that Les Paul. Such a thing of beauty!
He owns a 1959, and I think he said that Gibson made a copy of that 59 for him. This could very well be that copy.
i come back to this video once in awhile just to remind myself how absolutely gorgeous a Les Paul can be.. jesus christ
Amazing. Being learning this solo the past few weeks. It is a gift to see the author playing and teaching it. Loved it
Always been my favourite guitar solo....Don is the legend.
For any guitarist, this video should be 'gold-dust'. The subtle harmonies... and all parts laid open on such a beautiful and iconic track. Thank you.
after all these years, still get chills!
amazing how a super guitarist spends time to demo this fine piece of pure art. Feeling thankful
Thanks Don. The Eagles are over without Don Felder & Randy Meisner.
This is one of the best videos I've ever seen on you tube. What a song, what a guitar sound. It doesn't get better than this. Thanks Don.
Felder is awesome. Always has been. always will be.
Amazing to have you spend time teaching us, greatly appreciated.
Superb Guitarist!! I voted him #1 in the World.
That's why they called him Fingers.
You're Eagles's fan huh! So do I sister!
No way he’s not number one and neither will be not even the best In the Eagles
Thanks Don. I really appreciate you took the time to do this for us. Not only showing us the great solo but also the reasoning and recording history behind it.
Don Felder is awesome. His phrasing is so smooth and fluid
Just amazing how effortlessly he knocks that out the park. Must be the best solo ever. 😎
wow who better to learn from!!! great video.
I laugh at the 51 dislikes. The man is showing you how to play the most classic riffs of all time. "Mom, the meatballs, fu%#!!!"
can u imagine page showing us 1 of his, this was so cool,oh no ,I think henly wants to b fire him again.
Watch ur swearing... Meatballs dont
Well, you to have to think of this sort of people: "hey, here is a cup of coffee for you, right as you like!". "No, I like tea now!". "Ok, ok, here is your tea". "No! I like... don't know what I like... I hate everything, myself too".
One of my favorite guitar solos.
The technical creativity coupled with sheer melodic sensibility leaves me in awe.
this cat is one of the greats that came out of the seventies.....AWESOME what he can do with the pentatonic scale
What an incredibly valuable resource for future generations! Thanks Don!
What a sound, what a player...!
Awesome!! The man himself!! Don, Thank you for your gift to humanity!!!
Don is why the Eagles existed without him they're lame he should start a band called Felders Falcons or something.......you are the KING OF TASTE when I hear Eagles songs I think of you... not those two LUGNUTS .........THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HARD WORK .. DON
So,....where is he now ? I see Eagles but no Don Felder . They couldn't afford the 22 wheeler that they needed to carry his MASSIVE EGO !
Felix Burke Eagles songs co-written by Don Felder
"Visions" from One of These Nights (written by Don Felder & Don Henley)
"Too Many Hands" from One of These Nights (written by Don Felder & Randy Meisner)
"Victim of Love" from Hotel California (written by Don Felder & Don Henley, Glenn Frey, and J. D. Souther)
"Hotel California" from Hotel California (written by Don Felder & with Henley/Frey)
"The Disco Strangler" from The Long Run (written by Don Felder & with Henley/Frey)
"Those Shoes" from The Long Run (written by Don Felder & with Henley/Frey)
No doubt there are far more that he isn't even given credit for really or maybe his ideas were " marginalized " ! !!!!!!
YES LUG NUTS INDEED! I HAVE THE EAGLES FAREWELL ONE CD THAT WAS REDORDED AND FILMED IN AUSTRAILIA AND YOU KNOW THE AROGANCE OF GLEN FRY. WHEN HE MENTIONED HE WOULD INTRODUCE THE MEMBERS OF THE BAND HE INTRODUCED HIMSELF FIRST= NO CLASS AND TOTALLY SMUG AND VAIN
JustAintThatWay wow , gotta here this on and that name " FFalcons " very swift has a really good ring to it , hey you might just have something there ! You know what they say " if a bird shits on your head or on you , thats good luck " lol !
What a beautiful master piece. Thank you so much for such a lovely wonderful song.
Man that guitar sound is to die for. I wonder what amp/ effects he is using here.
ua-cam.com/video/tLMJIfmaVzM/v-deo.html watch this.
@@moonmadness1 thats an awesome rig rundown vid. Don seems like such a cool dude, loves to chat gear. Amazingly simple setup, its all in the fingers
I was wondering why no one is talking about it! I mean, I've always been a Fender guy but this Les Paul sound? It just let's you see why it is so famous. Well deserved fame, that is.
Don thanks for writing one of the best classic songs and so many people are inspired by your guitar work.and this solo is legendary
Incredible. I've heard other people on youtube play this solo and they play it well. However they still don't sound quite like Don Felder!
You've given a great gift, sharing incredible licks to one of the all time greatest guitar solos. From the man himself, what more could i want. Awesome, thank you.
thanks for sharing Don, not the biggest Les Paul fan, but dang, that tone rips, if only I had several thousand bucks lying around, you've sold me
Don THANK YOU! I loved the rips and it was only after watching your video that I really have a great appreciation of your work of art. When I listen to Hotel California will be reminded of the work of art that us mortals can only dream of producing.
Anytime I hear 4:19 especially, I think of Joe wearing that bandana and totally effed up, solo-ing with Don in the Hotel Live video from '77.
There are two sides to every story but I don't disagree with you. Read Felder's autobiography "Between Heaven and Hell", some interesting insights.
Desert Rain I actually met Frey in 96’ and he fits the personality portrayed in Felder’s book. Guy was a gold plated arsehole.
Can you tell me the name of the movie??
Hawkeye } The history of the Eagles… Part one, part two It’s a 2013 documentary. Just as I said in my post… The history of the Eagles. We have some thing nowadays it’s called Google?
@@desertrain4026 ohh that Google thing 😁 thanks
FABULOUS....absolutely....Fabulous....what a talented guitarist and composer.....BRAVO
thanks , one of very few to give a lesson of their own music, loved it . a 10 video
I think one reason for why so many musicians hesitate or aren't interested in giving lessons teaching how to play their songs, is that it's very easy to come across as being a pompous, self-centered prick.
Not Don, though! :)
teppolundgren; I read his book/autobiography, and he comes across as a normal guy with his head on straight.
DoofsterDan The guy who got kicked out of the eagles. FYI. But not because he was a bad guitarist or a bad bandmate but because Henley was such a prick.
Dalton Kelso
Actually, it was more Frey than Henley. Read Felders book. Henley is anal, but Frey has the bigger ego.
Don Felder and Joe Walsh made Eagles a good band.
Yeah Don Felder And Joe Walsh Were Awesome Together. The Eagles are not the Same with Don Felder.
Let's ask both of them to play togethet once again!!?? Don Felder and Joe Walsh!!!
What a true star to share this with us! Thank you so much.
Wow. Just beautiful playing. Don's playing is truly inspiritational. One can only hope to attain half this kind of talent and skill.
On top of the incredibly diverse notes and complexity, he throws in these little "chk-chk" noteless seasonings. Genius.
yeah, that's what I like something "extra" in Hotel California, I could not name it before but I call it "chk-chk" anymore :D. good definition.
This video (and after all this time) proves again the importance of Don Felder in making the legacy of the Eagles as a band. When I hear his playing I feel the original spirit of Hotel California. Thanks a lot to Guitar World for making this demonstration possible by the architect himself.
Just plainly KICKS ASS....GREAT GREAT solo.....can any of you even imagine coming up with that....so damn iconic.
I get goose bumps when I hear and see these guys play this song....A MASTERPEICE! They are perhaps the best songwriters and musicians this planet has ever had...
Super dang nice of Don to share his EXACT techniques. His unique timing is everything! Elusively difficult to nail it right.
