Great looking project and I really like the marking domino locations on the tape and using the awl for marking the joints. These two ideas will save me lots of time. Thank you!

Nice work Peter. I have three of these stools from Ikea. The first one (a long time back) was in a much heavier wood than the other two and I was quite disappointed that they changed the wood to something much lighter. Still, not so heavy to carry I suppose. Very useful stools. Yours looks too nice to stand on.
Thanks Bob! Yes, I’ve noticed that a few recent Ikea items have been noticeable lighter/thinner than the originals, but wether that’s down to cost-cutting, efficiency, or reducing environmental impact is hard to say. 🤷♂️👍
I have ivar shelves in the Pantry, for the price of the side pieces i can barely get the pine to build them. Not to mention the 32mm rail and router guide i’d have to get to drill the holes. Although it could be a good excuse to do just that.
Like this idea, just bought a birch Bekvam in Canada and noticed there is no bridle joint on the front leg. I wonder why they would change the construction for different markets?
I have got to admit that was a great video its nice to see you using raw mdf🤣 All joking aside would live to see you do more real wood....................

The Bekvam is a true classic, amazingly strong, a fantastic wee stool for cutting & supporting on-site. It would be interesting to know the designer? Thanks mate I enjoyed the video👍
Beware - the white painted version is not intended for use as a stool - only the unpainted one (even though they both cost the same). I'm rather sceptical about the structural integrity of the original stool design. To be fair, I had not noticed the bridle joint mating the horizontal member used on the sides to join the two legs until you pointed it out. Bridle joint or not though, I don't think that this way of making a step stool makes sense if you want it to support a big adult's weight over and over again for many years. It might do, because I think it's over-engineered in order to ensure integrity. For example, I'd have the top step's legs extend all the way to the floor rather than rest on what is essentially a cantilever. This is what production at scale affords you: you can have long fat screws and hardwood (making the design over-engineered) for a much lower cost that any individual carpenter can make it. I don't think any carpenter would ever think of making a stool this way but there you go: that's mass produced furniture for you. They can afford to use this sort of over-engineering even on items that need not support any significant weight (e.g. the white painted version and one of their cheapest bedside tables - both made of soft-wood - come in mind). I guess you could call it a feature as it provides the quick diy assembly capability. Rant over.
I would really prefer that Ikea does not cut out the handhold. With just inches away an apron to grab on to. I would prefer the top step to not have a redundant hole right in the centre of the blank sheet surface that I could otherwise do intarsia or Nordic chip caving, in-lay, whatever. Punch a hole right in the centre, very annoying. I don't want some engineer's predictable and boring creative idea of 'prettiness' forced on an article that comes un-finished and meant to be customized. What is the sense of limiting opportunity for creativity?
Cracking video Peter. This is going to get some amount of views. Those step stools are quality for money. Bought one years ago for €7. Used it for everything. Even the kids used it to watch TV.
What have you done with the real Peter? The real Peter would never use this 'hardwood' stuff One of these step stools would be absolutely pointless in my kitchen, the ceiling is so low even on the first step my head would be in the bedroom upstairs! The upside is it's super easy to change the light bulbs! 😂
Haha, the real Peter will return soon, e’s just taken a detour into an adjacent neighbourhood, found it to be not as terrible as he thought, and may we’ll return to it in future. But he knows where home is 😂👍👍
Over 30 years while raising a family in tiny house in London, I've hacked or copied many IKEA products. It's almost impossible to buy the timber and hardware for anything like the price of their ready to assemble items though used to replace their hinges till they raised their quality. Often trimmed them to fit which meant new fixing positions or reinforced them. Took 8 inches off a pine loft bed and hoped daughter wouldn't grow - she didn't.
By no means is this a masterpiece but it is... or at least looks to be, a great little starter project. I’ve got a load of odd bits of timber that I have no idea what to do with and figure I’ll have a crack at this to get me going. Could you publish dimensions?
Hardwood, and a hand plane. That's a good start, Peter. Next, you need to get rid of the Domino. That way, you can do real mortise and tenon joinery, as Paul Sellers intended.
Thank you! That’s really good to hear - haven’t been at all sure about this as it’s different on many levels to what I usually do, but it seems to be finding an audience. 👍👍
Nice project Peter. It was strange watching you plane and thickness timber, but enjoyed the video as usual and some nice little tips. Thanks for sharing. 😁
Why does Ikea cut a hole in the middle of the panel? Why do you follow what they did? Hand hold is not required for this light weight piece. It is some young designer touch of 'prettiness' in his opinion. It is a basic Scandinavian design which is known for it's straight line ecstatic. There should be no needless rounded holes in it. It is sold unfinished for owner to get creative with. Why does Ikea compromise that opportunity? Again, why do you follow suit? Leave the panel un-compromised and chip carve Viking motif and symbols or other stuff. Punching a hole in the middle of the panel is counter productive and limiting creativity of the panel.
I’ve no idea why Ikea provide a hand-hold - you probably need to ask them 🤷♂️ Why did I include it in my version? Because it weighs about 5 times as much as the Ikea stool, and my wife finds it useful. 👍👍
@@10MinuteWorkshop Why Ikea does it is rhetorical. The implied question is why did you do it. Missed opportunity by you due to what? Furniture Design Indoctrination program perpetrated by Ikea? Wood workers deviate with own touchs not duplicate robot produced product.
More on this in the blog post at 10minutrworkshop.com. Short answer though, I’d want a days work plus materials, so £400-£450, that kind of neighbourhood. It’s a nice neighbourhood, but I don’t think I’d get many takers. 🤷♂️👍😂
Cheers Mark! Yes, a bit out of my comfort zone, but it wasn’t terrible, and turned out OK in the end. Might be a bit more of this kind of thing in future. 🤷♂️👍
Great video. Nice to see a build video. And not in mdf 😉😉😉 more of these please. I appreciate the tool comparison videos but most of us youtubers can't afford the best gear. Id love a domino. Maybe one day.
Oh no... looks like I missed out on the 3 easy pieces challenge 🙁. Very nicely done Peter 😁👍. Hope you used the Millard Swagger when you walked it back in to the shop, a justified use I think 😁. Keep up the great vids 😁👍.
Hmm ... one thing i really like is that Work Bench with the many Holes ... where you can push down that nifty clamp. Looks *very* useful, in clamping down _any_ ... _shape_ or _size_ pieces to work on them with a variety of tools.
Hi and thanks! It’s an off-the-shelf Festool MFT or Multi-function table & the hinged rail comes as standard. See videos #182 and #183 for more details. 👍
An excellent project Peter. It turned out very nice. Do you have a suggestion for a good app to listen to your podcast? Something for an Apple product....
Thank you! Apple’s Podcasts.app is perfectly decent - comes installed with every device - or if you want something with a bit more scope to fiddle with, then Overcast is excellent. I’ve also used Pocket casts which worked HTH, Peter. 👍
I think I need to have a lie down after watching this as no sign of MDF as I am now in shock 😮 looks really good, I wonder if you could have gone down the Peter Sellars route only using hand tools, thank you Peter nice challenge and I think I may have a go at making one but using hand tools for the joints etc, might use my Triton thicknesser for stock preparation
Yours is vastly better to look at even though you followed the design fairly closely. I think this reflects the fact that this thing, like a lot of Ikea products, is actually well designed but made to a tight budget. Your choice of materials looks beautiful and your piece doesn't have the ugly Ikea furniture bolts in it. This project was a good idea well executed.
Great little stepping stool Peter ,now for the next one make the stool height and with two tip out steps on it ,you know that all fit inside the stool until needed ,myself i find i make crates out of a lot of the scraps ,they work great as a step ,sit on and putting stuff away, like more scraps of wood huh...lol
Great video. Thanks for sharing. We also have an Ikea Bekvam step-stool at home. And about two years ago I had the idea of making a second one because I had some (a lot) old beech flooring parts which could be suitable for that purpose. Now two years later, the plan and the flooring parts are still there but the DIM Bekvam step-stool not. I'm glad you made one and you should how it is possible to do it. But I lack 80% of your skills and 90% of your tools. I wonder how long time it took you to make it.
Thanks Hans! Always hard to put a time on things when you’re shooting video as that alone ads a factor of 3 or 4x, but starting with rough sawn timber to finishing with wax, whilst shooting video, took 2 days. So a fairly easy morning project I’d say, ifI our the cameras aside. 👍
One snippet from this video shows how well the track saw eats through fairly thick slices of ‘tree meat’. Better than I’d have thought.... was that your experience?
Thanks Frank! Yes, it’s pretty good at rip cuts, though the motor will bog down a little I’d you take it too fast. I have one saw with a 28t ‘universal’ blade in it and that helps. 👍👍
Like the idea of a "highback" version, I need something similar for my father who has mobility issues and his current workshop chair is not really fit for purpose. Some food for thought here Peter, many thanks for this 👍👍
A big change to your usual projects. Looks very nice. I make a version quite frequently for friends and family. I use Marbu Decking ( Australian Hardwood), for the step with ridges up. As David below. Great Idea to use awl dots to mark up the joints.
Thanks Peter! I enjoyed this little diversion into an adjacent neighbourhood - not actually terrible, I may visit it again! Great idea to use decking for the steps, I may have to use that - full credit given if I do! 👍👍
Great work. I liked the idea of using the tape to mark the mortices. Pity I don't have a Domino :( Good to see you do a non - cabinet, let's see more !
Great! I loved watching that. Skills!! Looking forward to the Essex Makers Challenge follow up vid. What a great idea. Top marks to the Essex shop. :-)
I'd be interested in how long it has taken you to build this. I think it is in general interesting how much time your projects need, especially compared to the video duration 🙂. But this one would be especially interesting, because everyone of us knows how long it takes to assemble ikea furniture.
That turned out great Peter; lovely job as usual and the awl / marking tip is a good ‘un. Out of curiosity, does the hardwood version weigh significantly more than the IKEA original? More of this please!
Cheers Eddy! Good question actually re the weight! It definitely weighs more, but I haven’t actually weighed them individually - one for the follow-up! 😂And thanks, yes, I enjoyed this - there’ll be some more in future 👍👍
Great job! I remember the bet (challenge) you had with someone in your family to try and get 10k subscribers. Look at you now! Kudos on sharing your experience and skills here on UA-cam. Cheers.
Great vid - will be interesting to see how it holds up with the domino construction, but I suspect it will be absolutely fine, especially in something so compact. Let us know!

One of these step stools would be absolutely pointless in my kitchen, the ceiling is so low even on the first step my head would be in the bedroom upstairs! The upside is it's super easy to change the light bulbs! 😂
....one small step for Mr. Millard...
One giant step for mankind ...
🙄🤭
😎👍☘🍺
😂👍👍
Great project and l love your unhurried laid back delivery too....
Thanks! As for unhurried - heck, that was me at my frantic best! 😂👍👍
By no means is this a masterpiece but it is... or at least looks to be, a great little starter project. I’ve got a load of odd bits of timber that I have no idea what to do with and figure I’ll have a crack at this to get me going. Could you publish dimensions?
Dimensions may be on the Ikea website - it’s their design of course, so I can’t put out cut lists or detailed plans 🤷♂️
Hardwood, and a hand plane. That's a good start, Peter. Next, you need to get rid of the Domino. That way, you can do real mortise and tenon joinery, as Paul Sellers intended.
😂 Not a chance of me doing mortise & tenon joinery when I have a Domino and a Zeta Matthew 🤷♂️👍
Very nice job and great shop. Do you have a list of all dimensions. Kevin
Hi Kevin, and thanks. No, I’m sorry I don’t. You can buy the plans from IKEA for about £13 - comes in 3D stool form..! 😂👍
don't tell me ikea's model is made from paper with that recycled honeycomb pattern
😂 Actually no, it’s genuine solid beech staves and glue. And some screws. 🤷♂️👍😂
Looks great! Can you pleaae share here the sizes and angles?🙏
Thanks, but no, sorry - it’s an ikea design, so their IP. You can buy a template from IKEA for about £11 - comes with a free stool… 👍😂
What a fantastic job looks great thanks for sharing your time and skill. 🍺🍺👍👍👍👍
Thank you! That’s really good to hear - haven’t been at all sure about this as it’s different on many levels to what I usually do, but it seems to be finding an audience. 👍👍
@@10MinuteWorkshop you always will quality thanks for sharing your skill 🍺🍺👍👍👍👍
nice job
No MDF was harmed in the making of this video
True - though it stood on the sidelines, looking worried... 😂
Nice project Peter. It was strange watching you plane and thickness timber, but enjoyed the video as usual and some nice little tips. Thanks for sharing. 😁
Thanks! It was a bit odd for me too! 😂👍
Wood workers deviate with own touchs not duplicate robot produced product.
wow, look at you with "real" wood,Awl and hand plane!!!
It’s not me - that’s my evil twin taking over the channel for a week. Won’t happen again. Probably. 🤷♂️
Would be interesting how much you would of had to charge as I get it all the time “ how much I can buy one from ikea for ?”
More on this in the blog post at 10minutrworkshop.com. Short answer though, I’d want a days work plus materials, so £400-£450, that kind of neighbourhood. It’s a nice neighbourhood, but I don’t think I’d get many takers. 🤷♂️👍😂
Nov.2019 £20
Good one as always. Bit off topic, how you rate the Erbauer planer/thicknesser?
Thanks for this, Peter. A bit different. Really enjoyed it.
Thanks! 👍😂
Rip mdf
Nooooo! MDF Forever! 😂😂👍👍
I had one I bought from IKEA about 5 years a go and they are absolutely fantastic enjoyed the video.
Great looking piece.so much nicer in proper wood, that's a great challenge idea. Billy bookcases next😀😀
Thanks! I’ll work my way up to a Billy; maybe a Lack table next 🤔🤷♂️👍😬
Oh no... looks like I missed out on the 3 easy pieces challenge 🙁. Very nicely done Peter 😁👍. Hope you used the Millard Swagger when you walked it back in to the shop, a justified use I think 😁. Keep up the great vids 😁👍.
Thanks Frank! No, the 3 easy pieces challenge will roll on month-to-month until the end of the year, I think. You don’t get off that lightly, lol 😂👍👍
@@10MinuteWorkshop I guess I should pop down to see Tim and get myself some wood 😁👍.
Is that a Mirock ruler at 7:09?
I'm guessing so, Peter has done many a (unpaid) recommendation on Mirock's stuff.
Yes, big fan of the Mirock rulers and squares. 👍👍
"Spending a ridiculous amount of time before realizing I could use a piece of scrap", been there, done that, got the t-shirt!
Hmm ... one thing i really like is that Work Bench with the many Holes ... where you can push down that nifty clamp.
Well done Peter. Not seen you work in hardwood before but then I wasn't looking over your shoulder in school. Nice looking piece.
Cheers Benedict! No, I’ve made one little personal project before, but this is the first ‘real’ one. 👍👍
@@10MinuteWorkshop It's a fine looking piece.
Nice vid, nice work, nice wood and nice project... You could have made it from MRMDF though.
Thanks! And I may yet.. 🤷♂️😂👍
Cheers Ray! TBH I Sam feeling a bit queasy - need to have a lie down on a mattress stuffed with MDF shavings! 😂 👍👍
Thank you! 👍👍
Haha, thanks Syd! Yes, that would be the challenge - where to put all those other scraps of wood! 😂😂👍👍
Great video. Thanks for sharing. We also have an Ikea Bekvam step-stool at home. And about two years ago I had the idea of making a second one because I had some (a lot)
old beech flooring parts which could be suitable for that purpose.
Some food for thought here Peter, many thanks for this 👍👍
Cheers Alan!👍👍
Thanks! I enjoyed it - there’ll be more to come, I’m sure. 👍👍
Great! I loved watching that. Skills!! Looking forward to the Essex Makers Challenge follow up vid. What a great idea. Top marks to the Essex shop. :-)
Thanks! Yes, the Essex makers meet-up vid will be out next week 👍👍
I'd be interested in how long it has taken you to build this. I think it is in general interesting how much time your projects need, especially compared to the video duration 🙂. But this one would be especially interesting, because everyone of us knows how long it takes to assemble ikea furniture.
Thanks! More detail on this in the accompanying blog post at 10mjnuteworkshop.com 👍👍
Cheers.
Thanks Gordon - and that bet seems a long time ago now! 👍👍
hi peter
very nice job indeed
and it looks great with the mix of hardwoods
regards
james
Thanks James! 👍👍
Liked the change in content here, is this now know as the milvam step?😆
Haha, thanks James. Not a total change of direction, just a detour into a different ‘neighbourhood’ if you like - and one I’ll return to, I think. 👍👍
Great vid - will be interesting to see how it holds up with the domino construction, but I suspect it will be absolutely fine, especially in something so compact. Let us know!
Thanks! I’ve no qualms about the domino construction generally, just where the front leg attaches - but yes, will keep you posted. 👍👍
