Yes, I was struck when I heard the steel-pan. An instrument I grew up with and my family members play it in Aruba. I would never imagined it in an Opera, but offcourse only in my wildest Caribbean and Latin-American imagination yes. Thank you Metropolitan, Yannick, the whole cast for this amazing piece. It really moved me as an Aruban-Dutch Operasinger to hear an Opera that sounds like a part the world I come from.

Excited for Florencia and Malcolm X! Thank you, Met, for bringing contemporary opera to us! Dead Man Walking was amazing! 👏👏👏

Peter Gelb and company please do classical operas more, than this “dead man walking” absurd etc. Don’t care about productions it should be modern but music as “the hours” and “Eurydice” - garbage 🗑️ Not interested in Nezet-Seguin, not even remotely close to Levine, but he was much better before he was announced the general music director of the Met.

Every opera had to be new at some point. I think we should encourage new composers, playwrites, and creators. If we don't encourage creation then what is the point of anything inspiration? There are plenty of classic productions still on the list. There's simply old AND new, and I think it's a great idea. Whether you like new works is your own personal preference, but we need the younger generation to see that there's still opportunity. If not: then why do we bother teaching arts and music if we won't allow them to create?

At the Metropolitan Opera in 1976, Philip Glass was in attendance during his two show run of "Einstein on the Beach" with a higher up manager from the Met. From PG - ''He asked me, 'Who are these people? I've never seen them here before.' I remember replying very candidly, 'Well, you'd better find out who they are, because if this place expects to be running in twenty-five years, that's your audience out there."
If art isn't growing, it's dying. To suggest that modern opera is not on par with the good ole war horses is hubris at its height. Opera needs to invite more voices and allow new stories to be told. Otherwise, this art form will slowly starve and wither away.

I feel exactly the opposite. I hate modernized productions of classic operas but love getting to see contemporary opera like Eurydice and The Hours. I can't wait to see Florencia.

Amelia Grimaldi becomes Florencia Grimaldi. Yannick's choice of nail polish color is horrible.
